For more than 48 years, Ora Lee Law has called her house along Thomas Ave. in north Minneapolis "home." "I just enjoy this house," Law said. "I #39;m right here on the corner and everything." Built in 1926, the house had its fair share of problems. The windows were a significant lead hazard, and overall mobility was a problem for the aging senior. "About five years ago, I decided to ask for some help to get my home fixed up cause I needed windows and other repairs done in the home that I wasn #39;t able to do before," Lee said. That #39;s where the Minnesota Department of Health and two Minneapolis-based nonprofits come into the picture. "It #39;s all part of working together to save money and have a healthier population," said James Koppel, deputy commissioner of health at the MN Department of Health. "Working together, one of the biggest things our organizations have done would be to restore Ora Lee #39;s sense of hope," said Kathryn Greiner, executive director of Rebuilding Together - Twin Cities. Monday afternoon, they gathered on Ora Lee #39;s front lawn to announce a "healthy homes" plan, where by working together, they made her home a safer place. The ball is in motion for the second phase of upgrades to the Lincoln County Courthouse. On Monday, the Lincoln County Board of Commissioners approved a $23,900 design contract with the M.E. Group in Omaha for window replacement.

In 2011, the windows were identified as one of the main culprits behind energy loss in the building. At the time, Tyler Glesne, project engineer, had said the current single-pane versions leak and create glare. He recommended replacing them with a dual-pane, argon filled glazing to improve insulation and add a tint.

They are part of an estimated $1.9 million worth of renovations that will be done to the courthouse. The electrical systems have already been upgraded.

Also at the meeting, the board authorized the Sutherland Cemetery to allow multiple burials on one plot. Joe Hewgley, commissioner, said discussion arose after a family requested that a cremation be added to an existing plot.

A date was selected for public hearings regarding the comprehensive plan and related zoning regulations. Action on the documents was tabled in August after people voiced concerns that changes to the wording might allow a Valentine-based company to crush concrete north of North Platte.

"We've been working on getting the plan and regulations passed for about two years now," Judy Clark, planning administrator, said. "It's been a long process, but I think we've got a really good product."

The hearings will be on Dec. 17. The plan will be considered at 9:30 a.m., zoning will be addressed at 10 a.m. and the subdivision regulations will be discussed at 10:30 a.m.

A right-of-way permit application submitted by Consolidated Companies was approved, as was a liquor permit application by Sculley, LLC for a wedding reception on Dec. 22 at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.
