I recently took a girl I met on tinder to Nandos. We had a lovely evening, and enjoyed each others company very much. After our meal, we repaired back to my house for a bottle of wine and a scientology doccumentary.

About an hour in to Louis Theroux and chill, my date got up to use the toilet. She returned with a panicked look in her eye, and told me she had something to tell me.

"I went for a poo in your toilet", she told me "and it would not flush. I don't know why I did this, but I panicked", she continued "I reached into the toilet bowl, wrapped it in tissue paper, and threw it out of the window".

I was understandably concerned, and told her we would go outside, bag up the offending poo in the garden, bin it, and pretend the whole sorry affair had never happened. Unfortunately, owing to a design quirk of my house, the toilet window does not in fact open to the garden, but instead into a narrow gap of about a foot and a half, seperated from the outside world by another (non-opening) double glazed window. It was into this twilight zone that my date had thrown her poo. Here are two photos to illustrate:(the offending package within the window)

As can be seen in the picture, the inside window opens at the top, into the gap that is seperated from the garden by a non-opening double-glazed window pane. Seeing only one solution, I messaged our house group-chat, and went upstairs to find a hammer and chisel to smash open the window.

My date had other ideas.

Being an amateur gymnast, she was convinced that she could reach into the window and pull the poo out, using the tried and tested "inside out blag as glove" technique. Unfortunately she couldn't reach. She climbed further in and had the same problem. Eventually I agreed to give her a boost up and into the window. She climbed in head first after her own turd, reached deeper into the window, bagged it up, and passed it out, over the top and back into the toilet from whence it came. She called out to me to help her climb out from the window, I grabbed her waist and I pulled. But she was stuck. Stuck fast. Try as we might, we could not remove her from the window. She was stuck fast, upside down in the gap. Here is a picture to illustrate:

Unfortunately for my date, at this stage I could see only one way out of our predicament. She had been upside down in the window for around 15 minutes at this point, and I was starting to grow concerned for her health. I called the fire brigade.

Bristol's finest were on scene sirens blairing in a matter of minutes. Once they had composed themselves after surveying the scene in front of them, they set to work removing my date from the window using all of their special firemen hammers and tools. It took them about 15 minutes. Here is a picture of them working:

Unfortunately, although they rescued my date unharmed from what must have been a rather unpleasant confined space to find yourself in, in the process they had to completely destroy the window with their special fire tools. I'm not complaining, they did what they had to do. Problem is, I've been quoted north of 300 to replace the window. As a postgraduate student, that is a significant chunk of my monthly budget (in fact, that is my monthly budget).

So I'm turning to the internet for help. If people could donate just a couple of pounds/dollars/yen/ruppee/North Korea Won to help me repair my (now broken) window I would be enternally greatful. If the window is not replaced my landlord may well kill me, so you would be literally helping to save a life.

Oh yeah, and if by some miracle I manage to raise more money through this page than the cost of the window, any remainder will be split 50/50between two charities:

First, toilet twinning, a charity building and maintaining flushing toilets in the developing world. 60% of people worldwide don't have access to a flushing toilet, which, when you think about it, really is pretty shit.

Seccond, to the firefighters charity. The guys who came to the house were brilliant, took everything in good humour, and profesional. This call out was pretty funny, but they do risk their lifes on a daily basis, and the firefighters charity provides financial, psychological and medical help to the brave men and women who risk their lives for us.

No window lasts forever, though, and it's common to need to replace your windows roughly every 20 to 25 years, if not sooner. Common reasons to replace windows may include wanting to increase the energy efficiency of the home, rotting frames or sheathing, water leaks, which have lead to mold or insulation problems, or the desire to increase the value of your home.

There are a number of factors that can affect the cost of window replacements. The material, size of the window, condition of the existing frame, and the type of glass can all impact your final cost. Sometimes it's not the window that's causing energy loss, but the air gap around the frame. This can be fixed by sealing the frame with caulk4, and can be done at the same time as a window replacement. Some installers will do this free of charge, while others will add on a cost of around $30 to the project. All window installers will strive to create a watertight seal around the window frame by tightly fitting the new window, and potentially caulking4 this area as well.

You can see the drafts blowing the curtains, water damage is clearly visible, or frost is present on the inside layer of glass during the winter. What may not be so apparent; however, is what replacement window option best suits your needs, and what installation methods may pose potential headaches for you and your contractor.

There are basically three different replacement options: sash replacement, frame-and-sash replacement and complete unit replacement. Each has its benefits and drawbacks, and each carries its own installation quirks.

Sash replacement is a good option if the window frame is in good condition with no signs of water damage and the opening is still square and true. These are installed by removing old sashes and parting stops and installing new jamb liners. Most replacement sashes are compression-fit into the liners, making an airtight seal. This is the least expensive way to upgrade energy efficiency; there is no need to disturb trims or casings. However, the overall performance may fall short of other two options, and the new look may make the frame and sash appear too bulky.

"You can get virtually any glazing package with sash replacements that you could on any complete unit," says Brad Oberg, chief technology officer at IBACOS Inc. "There's no real sacrifice in performance with these units or the frame-and-sash units, but there may be in aesthetics for some people."

Sash-and-frame replacement can work well if the windowsill is showing signs of moisture damage or air is leaking between the sash and frame but everything else is in good shape. Typically, a single unit is fit into existing jambs and against the interior or exterior stops, then screwed or nailed into the jambs. These are the most expensive units to buy, but homeowners save in reduced labor costs. However, this option can reduce the daylight opening much more significantly than sash replacement.

Complete unit replacement basically a new window with new flashing, sealants, caulking and insulation is the best option for significantly compromised or damaged windows and openings. Fiberglass/composite. More expensive than wood or vinyl, but more durable as well. Requires virtually no maintenance, and can be painted any color, with faux woodgrains also available.

Wood. A popular choice for aesthetics, typically only a little more expensive than vinyl, requires diligent maintenance, can take any stain or color and available in many species.

Aluminum clad. Typically the most expensive but maintenance free, wood exteriors can be stained to match existing dcor, while aluminum exteriors can take almost any color. May not be suitable for coastal environments where saltwater is a concern.

Residents deal with costly expenses after Baltimore steam pipe explosion in June

BALTIMORE, Md. (WBFF) -- There are some frustrated car owners, after that steam pipe explosion in downtown Baltimore.

The blast damaged more than 30 vehicles two months ago and a Baltimore County couple is still worried about who will pay for their repairs.

In Perry Hall, Michelle Muir and her husband are dealing with an explosion expense.

"Everything that has to be done to this car, we have to pay for," said Muir.

Muir said the cost to repair the damage to her 2002 Honda Accord is estimated to be close to more than a thousand dollars.

A blown out back window has been replaced, so the car is drivable. Still, theres so much more to do.

"The sunroof, they said, was over $400. So, it's a total of close to $2,000 for window replacement," said Muir.

Muir said the damage was caused by the pipe explosion that happened in downtown Baltimore in June.

But now, two months later, the Muirs say theyre still waiting for Veolia, the company that owns the steam line, to pay for the damage done to the car.

"They say until, again, until they are found at fault, they are not going to pay for anything. And that's frustrating because we weren't at fault," said Muir.

The couple had gone downtown for a baseball game. They showed us pictures of their car covered in dirt and debris, with a dented hood, shattered back window and other broken windows. Its a car casualty situation for the couple when patience is running so low.

"Patience is ok, if we had full coverage on the car, we don't. So, basically, we're paying out of pocket," said Muir.

We reached out to a Veolia spokesperson who tells us, if its determined that Veolia is responsible for the cause of the steam pipe explosion, the company will pay for damages to cars.
