The revitalisation of the quieter part of East Perth is progressing with the old Chem Centre building going on the market.

Minister for Planning John Day announced that expressions of interest were being sought for developers work on the 5,335sqm site.

With potential for retail, residential and commercial accommodation ranging from four to 16-storeys, development of the site Lot 101, Hay Street- will ensure the new East Perth community has adequate access to a variety of shops and essential services close to where they live, he said.

Lot 101 Hay Street will breathe new life into the area.

The development is expected to brighten up the area that will also benefit from other works happening in the area as part of the state governments Riverside project.

Further east, next year Lend Lease will start construction on Waterbank which includes as extension of Hay Street to the Swan River, a public beach, jetty and up to 1000 new apartments, Mr Day said.

The heritage listed building is the pink brick building behind us and that has been used for, I would say, 30 to 40 years, as the Chemistry Centre laboratories for Western Australia.

The Chemistry Centre is an important agency in analysing a whole range of scientific tests in relation to illicit drugs for example, environmental protection, the racing industry, they play an important role in and other scientific research, theyve been relocated about eight years ago I think it was, into a new building purpose built for them at Curtin University site, this site has been disused since then.
