Dining decks return to the menu along Main Street

Dining decks have returned to the Main Street streetscape.

The Park City Council approved agreements with nine restaurants allowing them to operate dining decks on the street. The dining decks debuted in 2010 and have proven popular as an al fresco alternative for customers.

Another restaurant, Silver, has filed paperwork for a dining deck. City Hall staffers are reviewing the application.

The decks must be removed by Oct. 30. City Hall charges the restaurants $550 per parking spot lost to a deck.

Francisco Astorga, a City Hall planner assigned to the dining deck applications, said state alcohol regulators in the future could tighten the rules regulating alcohol service across a sidewalk. The restaurants have been worried about a tightening of the rules, Astorga said.

The restaurants and leaders on Main Street see the decks, which are often packed, as being attractive to diners. They were introduced as a way to increase Main Street's competitiveness with other shopping, dining and entertainment districts. Some restaurants along Main Street already had patios offering al fresco dining, but the dining decks provided the opportunity to other places.
