A three-car accident on the George Washington Bridge has closed all of the lower decks eastbound lanes, less than an hour after an accident on the eastbound upper deck shut two of those four lanes, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey said.

The incidents have pushed the waiting time to cross the Hudson River span into New York City to about an hour, the spokesman, Chris Valens, said.

In the first incident, shortly after 3 p.m., a tractor-trailer spilled fuel on the upper deck when its gas tank was pierced by a protruding finger joint, the spokesman, Chris Valens, said.

Although the truck has been towed from scene, the eastbound upper decks two left lanes are closed as crews work to replace the metal joint, Valens said.

On the lower deck about a half-hour later, a three-car accident on the span has further impacted the afternoon commute but caused no injuries, Valens said.
