Park City leaders recently granted the approval needed for nine restaurants to operate dining decks along Main Street this year.

The Park City Council OK'd leases with the restaurants that allow the decks to occupy public space along the street. There was a limited amount of discussion about the topic prior to the City Council vote. The leases were approved 4-0 with City Councilman Alex Butwinski absent.

The nine leases matches the number granted in 2012 and 2011. The restaurants granted leases this year are:

The dining decks are allowed to open on May 1. They must be taken down by Oct. 30. Each of the leases covers one year.

The restaurants will pay between $550 and $1,045 in lease fees depending on the size of the decks.

The leases with five of the restaurants -- Bistro 412, Flanagan's, Bandits' Grill & Bar, Shabu and 501 On Main -- will not be signed until a work schedule for Main Street improvements is finalized.

None of the decks will be required to come down for the Park City Kimball Arts Festival in early August.

Dining decks along Main Street debuted in the summer of 2010. Restaurateurs at the time saw the decks as attractions, saying that al fresco dining is something that would be popular. In the years since their debut, the dining decks have oftentimes been packed.

There was a limited amount of interest as the City Council approved the leases. Steve McComb, the owner of Cisero's and Bistro 412, told the elected officials it cost $5,000 per year in fees and to build and then dismantle a dining deck. He also mentioned that it is difficult to keep a deck open for lunch into the fall, when the crowds along Main Street typically thin.
