Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) --After more than 12 hours of demolition work, the Clarion Hotel and Casino is finally a pile of dust. But it didn't come down without a fight.

The elevator shaft remained standing until Tuesday afternoon, when demolition crews tore it down with cables and pulleys.

All morning, there were snaps and pops as crews put tension on that massive cable working to topple over the remaining eight stories of the elevator shaft. They finally succeeded without the help of a wrecking ball.

The elevator shaft of the Clarion defied more than 1,100 pounds of explosives placed strategically and 4,400 boreholes designed to make the building fall in on itself in a spectacular detonation.

When the rest of the building went down, the elevator shaft just didn't want to join. It took crews 12 hours to successfully dismantle the piece, wrapping caravels around it and pulling it over in two phases.

A wrecking ball was on order in case the cable trick didn't work, but crews got lucky, making the project for the new site one step closer to realization

The next step is they're going to come knock down the two-story facade.

That project should take only about a day, then an estimated couple weeks to clear the lot. The hope is it will be clear and ready for building by the end of the month.
