Over half-a-dozen government officials, including four fire-fighters, were injured in an attack on the demolition squad of the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) by the locals at Nathupur village in DLF Phase-3 area here late on Thursday night.

About 90 jhuggi-jhonpris were gutted when a fire broke out near Nathupur village on Thursday afternoon.

When MCG Commissioner Praveen Kumar went to the spot to take stock of the situation, the locals informed him that the land on which the jhuggis had come up belonged to the civic body.

He also got to know that an under-construction building and a residential building had also come up illegally on the land.

Dr. Kumar immediately called the MCG demolition squad and directed them to raze the unauthorised buildings.

This led to protest from the locals, who turned violent and set two fire department vehicles on fire and damaged six other official vehicles.

Six government officials, including four fire-fighters sustained injuries in the attack. The fire-fighters were admitted to a hospital and discharged by Friday morning. A case has been registered against a dozen villagers in this connection.

Unconfirmed reports said that Dr. Kumar was also held hostage by the mob for more than 30 minutes.
