Demolition on the ABC cinema site in Tunbridge Wells began in earnest on Tuesday.

Work began on the southern side of the site, where there is a former doctors surgery and a large house.

Ed Bellhouse of developer Bellhouse Joseph, said:

Work is progessing well and demolition began in earnest on Tuesday. Specialist machinery arrived on site this morning and work started on the demolition of the former doctors surgery and the house on the southern part of the site.

He added: Meanwhile, work continues on the soft stripping of material from the old cinema itself and the shop units around it in preparation for their demolition.

Work began on site on June 30 and former access routes via Church Road have been temporarily closed off.

Demolition is due to finish in October when the site will be levelled and boarded up.

Bellhouse Joseph, which bought the site with The Carlyle Group in 2011, is working on revised plans for a mixed development.

Construction company Sir Robert McAlpines contract manager Norman Clark said the percentage of recycling carried out during demolition would be phenomenal.
