Demolition of the U.S. 6 bridge over Interstate 25 begins Sunday night, which will cause heavy traffic delays through the rest of the week.

The demolition is expected to stretch through Thursday.

The work is to begin at about 8 p.m., and on each night, double lane closures will be in effect on northbound and southbound lanes of I-25.

Motorists traveling in the area should anticipate lengthy delays and increased traffic in the area each night, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.

To ensure safety, southbound I-25 will be diverted off the highway at 6th Avenue and northbound I-25 traffic will shift into the southbound lanes to travel beneath the bridge, CDOT said.

Traffic will be detoured starting at 10 p.m.

Southbound I-25 motorists will be detoured west on U.S. 6 to Federal Boulevard, then south on Federal to 5th Avenue to take eastbound U.S. 6 and reconnect with southbound I-25.

With I-25 traffic making this loop detour, people traveling south on Federal Boulevard and east on U.S. 6 can also expect heavier-than-normal traffic, particularly between 10 p.m. and midnight each night, CDOT said.
