McPherson -- The newest building inspector for the city of McPherson is seeing a number of construction projects being done without the necessary permits required by the law, and he wants it to stop.

McPherson -- Appointed in August, Bret Reynolds said hes seen a number of problems happen due to a lack of permits and necessary inspections. One of the most common problems Reynolds said hes run across is leaks in plumbing. The leaks happen due to a lack of proper testing prior to drywall installation.

McPherson -- Youd be surprised how many leaks weve found so far, Reynolds said.

McPherson -- Among some of the most common projects homeowners try to do on their own without a permit include drywall installation and management, pluming and gas line management. And without the proper permits and inspection prior to final installation, homeowners can find they owe for repairs that could have been avoided.

McPherson -- Reynolds says he doesnt have a problem with individuals attempting to solve these problems on their own, so long as they have the proper permit to do so.

McPherson -- Im more concerned with how the work is done, and that its up to code and its done properly,he said. Its best to protect both the homeowner and whoever they sell (the property) to that it is good for the future.

McPherson -- Reynolds also warns against hiring an outside contractor without some proper background checks.

McPherson -- Not all are good, he said, adding some may not have the proper permits themselves and may fail to meet the standards and regulations required by law.

McPherson -- The owners should ask whoever they hire if they have a permit, Reynolds said.

McPherson -- In an effort to increase safety for homeowners and contractors alike, work has begun on improving the inspection processes for the city of McPherson,
