NHK - Syrian tanks in Golan Heights DMZ cause Israeli protests
NHK World News ---- Nippon H #333;s #333; Ky #333;kai Description -- Three Syrian tanks entered the demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights on Saturday, prompting Israel to lodge a protest with the United Nations. The UN has peacekeepers stationed there. The Israeli military says the tanks entered the zone between Israel and Syria in the afternoon and remained there for several hours. Israel has occupied the Golan Heights since the 1967 Middle East War. The demilitarized zone was later created for UN troops to monitor a truce between the 2 neighbors. In filing a protest, Israel said the entry of the tanks is a violation of the truce. Israeli military officials told NHK that the tanks #39; gun turrets were always directed toward Syria instead of Israel. This suggests the entry was related to an operation against rebel forces inside Syria. Stray mortar shells from Syria landed on the Golan Heights in September. Israel is strengthening its defenses in the area by building fences and trenches. Nov. 3, 2012 - Updated 23:58 UTC (08:58 JST)From:NHKReloadedViews:26 1ratingsTime:01:05More inNews Politics
