A Unique Sense of Place: Mike Allmendinger at TEDxFargo City 2.0
Landscape Architects bring a unique and creative vision when designing spaces. Their visions tend to dig further into existing context to blend with the inherent sense of place. The term sense of place is defined differently and used in many different ways by many different people. It is often tied to the geographic characteristics of a city, state, or entire regions. Places that have a strong sense of place, have a strong identity and character that is defined by cultural features and is shaped by the people who occupy the place. Mike Allmendinger has an extensive history with landscape architecture, design and construction. Growing up in a family-owned landscape construction business in Wahpeton, ND, Mike was exposed to the potential of Landscape Architecture in this region, which led him to enroll at North Dakota State University. In 2003, Mike opened Land Elements, a Landscape Architecture firm, where he assists clients in realizing their goals, all while creating a unique sense of place. Besides being a Landscape Architect, he is also the General Manager of Kilbourne Group, a real estate development company. Mike also serves on the Alumni Board for the Architecture and Landscape Architecture Department at North Dakota State University.
