A 39-year-old man is in Travis County Jail after police say he threatened a pest control man with a knife.
James Edward Cothran could face up to 20 years in prison for an assault that police say took place Thursday when Cothran returned to his apartment in the 7100 block of North Interstate 35 to find his entry barred while a contracted pest control technician treated the home for bed bugs, an arrest affidavit said.
The technician attempted to keep Cothran out, telling Cothran he would have to halt the treatment and charge Cothran with any expenses that resulted, the affidavit said.
Police say that bugged Cothran, who became agitated and began trying to force his way inside, the affidavit said.
Cothran tried to push the door open while the pest control man held the door knob from turning, it said. Cothran pulled a knife from his pants pockets and threatened to stab the pest control man if he did not allow him inside, the document said.
The pest control man let Cothran inside, it said, and then called 911. He told police that Cothran had a blade between 4 and 5 inches long and that he feared for his safety, the affidavit said.
Cothran has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bail was set at $25,000.
Cothran had signed a written acknowledgement that the treatment would take place that day, and that it stated he should not be in the home while it was heated to about 140 degrees and treated with chemicals, the affidavit said.

Scotts Miracle-Gro, best known for helping to grow plants, is turning its attention to killing pests.
The Marysville maker of lawn- and garden-care products said yesterday that it is planning to acquire at least one regional pest-control service company this year and will launch a new line within its growing lawn-care service business.
We currently are exploring acquisition opportunities in (the pest-service) space, and I wouldnt be surprised ... if we dont make our first test acquisition in 2014, Barry Sanders, Scotts president and chief operating officer, told analysts during a conference call reviewing results of the companys first fiscal quarter yesterday.
While lawn care remains the overwhelming piece of the business, (Scotts LawnService) continues to expand ... into pest service, as well, Sanders said.
The U.S. pest-control industry currently is dominated by Rollins, which operates under the Orkin brand, and ServiceMaster, which has the Terminix brand. The industry had revenue of $11.1 billion and profit of $858.1 million last year, according to IBISWorld, an industry market-research firm.
Sanders said his company has a 6 percent market share of the $4 billion lawn-care market and a nonmaterial share of the pest-control service market.
His company plans to acquire a few pest-control businesses over the next couple of years and make sure we get it right before we begin to scale it, he said.
Scotts acquired a majority interest in its first lawn-care company, Emerald Green Lawn Service, in 1997 and started its lawn service a year later, spokesman Lance Latham said in an email.
It has not been ... the most-awesome journey ever, Scotts CEO and Chairman, Jim Hagedorn, told analysts yesterday. We acquired a lot of stuff probably too fast and didnt control it as well as we could have, and we had some pretty significant integration issues that we have corrected.

Two homes targeted by same thieves in one day in Shirley, Southampton
12:21pm Saturday 8th February 2014 in News
POLICE believe two burglaries within half a mile of each other in Southampton could be linked.
Intruders plundered an engagement ring and 105 cash after breaking into a home in Pentire Way, Shirley.
They removed part of a back garden fence panel to gain access before forcing open patio doors with a blunt tool.
They conducted an untidy search in upstairs bedrooms before damaging another fence panel in a neighbouring garden on the way out.
Intruders also used a tool to force open the rear door of a home in Wilton Crescent the same day, but left empty-handed after an untidy search.
Both break-ins happened on Tuesday, January 28 the first between 4.30pm and 6pm and the second between 8am and 10.30pm.
Witnesses should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
