San Diego, Calif. In the United States, community solar is a growing phenomenon. Those who live in an apartment or dont have suitable roofs or land are able to invest in, and benefit from, a larger project. In Japan, investing in a PV with Lot is becoming popular among individuals who dont own land and wish to generate extra income from the nations feed-in tariff (FIT).
PV with Lot projects are popping up everywhere and individual investors can pick any site, independent from the location of their primary residency. This is similar to solar securitization and solar crowdfunding as an individual investment tool for solar, but it is different because individuals have actual ownership over solar projects.
Photo of 324-kW ground-mount system by Nippon Ecosystem
Project developers market PV with Lot investment to individuals such as retirees seeking supplement income and large saving account-holders looking for a high-yield investment. Expected return on investment (ROI) from a PV with Lot ranges from 8 percent to 10 percent, and homeowners can receive a better ROI on a PV with Lot than PV on their own roofs.
When homeowners install solar systems on their rooftops, they receive a FIT rate of 38/kWh only on excess generated electricity for 10 years. Those who invest in a PV with Lot, however, can receive the same rate on all electricity generated for 20 years.
Hitting the Sweet Spot
PV with Lot investments are ideal for systems sized below 50 kW. Under the current national regulations, PV systems sized under 50 kW are connected to low-voltage distribution lines while systems sized between 50 kW and 2 MW are connected to high-voltage distribution lines. A fast-track, or simplified, interconnection process is available for systems no larger than 50 kW, providing minimum time required for an interconnection to be reviewed and approved.
The short project development time is very beneficial for both developers and customers (investors), said Hiromi Ishihara of Asglad Communications, a solar project and real estate developer.
Besides the processing time, interconnecting systems below 50 kW cost significantly less than larger systems. According to one large project developer, it only costs 600,000-700,000 ($5,800-$6,800) to interconnect solar systems to low-voltage distribution lines, compared to 2.4 million ($23,350) for high-voltage distribution lines.

MEDFORD, Ore. NewsWatch12 is restarting our Wednesdays Child segments under the banner of our Kids in Crisis Campaign. For the rest of this month and beyond, we will be bringing you examples of how children are struggling in our community as well as how you can help.
Paul and Christina are two energetic and engaging kids looking for a forever family. These two are not short on energy. Keeping up with them was a challenge. Paul is 8 and Christina is 7. She is all about Barbies, Princess and the Popstar Barbie to be specific, and the space in her smile that arrived for the holidays. She loves to swim.
Paul seems happy to let Christina do most of the talking. Hes a man of action: cutting wood, mowing the lawn and riding his bike. Their current home has three dogs, Bellas is the largest and apparently the toughest for Christina to handle.
Bella may have the upper hand in tug of war, but it sounds like Christina can hold her own with her brother. Sibling spats aside, these two kids love school, and have no major health issues, despite mutual their love of candy and chili dogs.
Were hoping theyll soon have a forever family so they can begin living the lives they deserve. NewsWatch12 would like to thank the Science Factory for their help in this segment. If youre interested in learning more Paul and Christina, or adoption or foster care, contact the Department of Human Services Child Welfare Division at 776-6120 ask for extension 264.

Landscape architects operate in much the same was as traditional architects. They are responsible for both the functional and aesthetic layout of a design. The principal difference is in the medium in which they work. Landscape architects use living canvases, such as grasses, flowers and trees, as well as traditional construction materials such as concrete to enhance and beautify outdoor spaces. Landscape architects design and plan out green spaces for a number of different clients. They can work on large-scale projects such as public use spaces like parks and recreational areas, as well as major commercial and industrial sites. In these instances, landscape architects often work closely with local government commissions and traditional architects when planning out the ideal landscape to enhance and complement the buildings they accompany. Landscape architects also work on smaller projects, such as private homes. In these instances, they will work closely with the homeowner to create a living landscape that suits the individual's personal taste.
Landscape architects are required to be registered in the state in which they practice. These registration requirements vary by location, but most require a degree as well as an exam for licensing. As the economy and housing market rebounds, the outlook for landscape architects is very promising. The market for these services is closely tied to the construction industry, as new construction requires the services of landscape architects to complement the aesthetics of the buildings being planned.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 7 -- The U.S. Department of the Interior'sNational Park Service issued the following news release:
The "Monuments Men," the team of historians who protected monuments, artwork and other cultural treasures from the destruction of World War II and whose story is told in a major motion picture being released today, included among their ranks former and future employees of the National Park Service.
Denys P. "Peter" Myers, an architectural historian with the National Park Service'sHistoric American Buildings Survey, and Norman T. Newton, a landscape architect in what is now the Northeast Regional Office, were among the 350 men and women from 13 nations who volunteered for this dangerous service. Officially known as the military's Monument, Fine Arts and Archives section, the Monuments Men were museum directors, curators, art scholars and educators, artists, architects and archivists whose mission was to save as much of the greatest cultural and artistic achievements of Europe as possible from the destructive threat of war.
"The preservation of places and objects that represent our nation's culture and history is core to the mission of the National Park Service," said National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis. "We are proud that in a time of international crisis, men with the skills and expertise to preserve our nation's cultural heritage answered the call to ensure that these treasures from other nations would not be lost."
In all, the Monuments Men tracked, located, and ultimately returned more than 5 million artistic and cultural items stolen by Hitler and the Nazis. Their role in preserving cultural treasures was without precedent. In civilian life, many of these individuals played extraordinarily prominent roles with some of the greatest cultural and educational institutions in the United States.
Technician Fifth Grade Denys P. "Peter" Myers
Architectural historian Peter Myers served with the U.S. Army as a member of the Monument, Fine Arts and Archives program from 1943 until 1946. During that time, he participated in the recovery of art stolen by the Nazis, and aided in the remarkable salvage of the frescoes by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo at the Residenz Palace in Wurzburg, Germany.
In his post-war career, he worked for the National Park Service for 20 years, primarily with the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), a database of drawings, photographs and histories representing America's architectural heritage. He contributed the written historical data to more than a dozen surveys (http://www.loc.gov/pictures/related/?q=Myers%2C%20Denys%20Peter&fi=names&co=hh) during his career. Myers was also considered an authority on 19th-century gas lighting and authored Gas Lighting in America: A Pictorial Survey (http://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/hcrs/myers/index.htm), 1815-1910 for the National Park Service in 1978.
Lt. Col. Norman Thomas Newton
Norman Newton served as an Associate Landscape Architect for the National Park Service from 1933 to 1939. During this time he designed the master plan for the Statue of Liberty and Bedloe's (today Liberty) Island, in which he called for the removal of old Army barracks and the creation of a formal design of lawns and walkways. Newton's objective of "a setting of appropriate well-ordered dignity" continued to dominate the development program even after his departure from the National Park Service in 1939, and his influence can be seen at the site to this day. Other projects Newton completed for the National Park Service included master plans for Saratoga National Historical Park and Salem Maritime National Historic Site.

Jade Mountain Whats so special
With private infinity pools, personal butlers and beautiful white sandy beaches, Jade Mountain, which overlooks the Pitons (two volcanic plugs that form part of a World Heritage site), has everything youd expect from the Caribbean.
The hotel is a glorious feat of architecture, and stands near Soufrire, on the west coast, says Stylist Magazine. Clever design and landscaping leave the front of the open-plan suites open to the elements, while maintaining complete privacy. Youll get your own private pool, lounge area, and sun terrace.
Guests are assigned a butler on arrival and each suite comes with a mobile phone on which to phone them. But you shouldnt need much assistance: everything is helpfully laid out for you and the fridge is stocked with a bento box, petit fours and drinks.
The two-storey restaurants speciality is fresh seafood, including scallops and lobsters.
A double room costs from $1,025 per night, on a room-only basis. For more information, visit the hotels website at http://www.jademountain.com, or call the US booking office free on 0800-141 2859.
A gorgeous location, all-inclusive packages and high level of luxury combine to make this a relaxing, magnificent getaway from the British weather.
Spread over 12 acres of tropical gardens, the well-run East Winds Inn is an unflashy and utterly tranquil haven, says Fred Mawer in The Daily Telegraph. Dont let the fact that its all-inclusive put you off the hotel is much classier than that might imply. The rooms are located in cottages scattered around the gardens.

KKR & Co. (KKR), the private-equity firm run by Henry Kravis and George Roberts, said fourth-quarter profit more than doubled as appreciation in its buyout holdings fueled paper gains and its funds sold investments at a profit.
Economic net income after taxes, a measure of profit excluding some costs, increased to $773.6 million, or $1.08 a share, from $337 million, or 48 cents, a year ago, New York-based KKR said in a statement today. Analysts had expected earnings of 89 cents a share on that basis, according to the average of 14 estimates in a Bloomberg survey. KKR said it will pay stockholders a dividend of 48 cents a share on March 4.
KKR was the most active private-equity firm in 2013, according to research firm Dealogic, investing more than $17 billion in 34 companies. The firm agreed to buy landscape-maintenance company Brickman Group Ltd., insurance-technology company Mitchell International Inc. and a pair of industrial-lifting businesses from Melrose Industries Plc (MRO), all in deals valued at more than $1 billion.
KKR had a strong quarter on the back of very good returns, Christopher Harris, an analyst at Wells Fargo & Co. in Baltimore, wrote in a note to clients today. With ENI and the dividend both above expectations, we see the stock doing well.

KKR sold its remaining stake in retailer Dollar General Corp., a 2007 buyout that returned more than 4.5 times KKRs money for one of its most profitable investments.
KKR rose 2.9 percent to $23.89 in New York. The stock has declined 1.8 percent so far this year as the Standard & Poors 500 index of large U.S. companies has fallen 4.1 percent.
Among KKRs dispositions in the quarter were share sales of hospital operator HCA Holdings Inc., European broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG, NXP Semiconductor NV (NXPI) and French floor maker Tarkett SA. (TKTT) KKR also sold its remaining stake in retailer Dollar General Corp. (DG), a 2007 buyout that returned more than 4.5 times KKRs money for one of its most profitable investments.
