Mold forces Duluth family out of apartment, causes illness

    - February 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Fighting mold in Georgia is not an easy battle. It has caused one metro Atlanta family to get sick in their own home and they said their landlord has done very little to address the issue.

"We have no living room, we have no dining room. We can't even sit at the table to eat dinner. Water may come down on us if we try to," tenant Tiffany Pharr said.

So CBS Atlanta called on Heaton Environmental to investigate, after Pharr complained about the living conditions in their apartment.

She said a water leak at the apartment complex caused their ceiling to cave in twice during the past two months and management has only patched the problem.

Concerned the moisture would lead to mold, they bought a home test kit for about $10. They put one petri dish on the carpet, the other next to the hole in the ceiling. The results were shocking.

"We've all now been sick pretty much since this all happened with sneezing, runny nose, itchiness, all of us, all four of us," Pharr said.

Pharr said she asked management to move her family to another apartment to avoid exposure to the mold, but they told her only if she renewed her lease for a year.

"It's stressful and I'm pregnant and I shouldn't be going through this much stress while being pregnant," Pharr said.

Because petri dish results are unreliable, CBS Atlanta asked Heaton Environmental to run over $700 worth of air quality tests.

Flooding Leaves Bonaire Residents Fearing Possible Mold Problem, AGC Environmental Advises Early Florida Air Quality …

    - February 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Delray Beach, FL (PRWEB) February 05, 2014

Bonaire was one of those areas hit by the flooding in Delray Beach in early January. And according to a report from wptv.com, the residents feared that the rise of water might have caused mold growth in their houses. In response to it, AGC Environmental advised everyone to have a Florida air quality testing done.

In the report, which was posted on January 31, 2014, Gloria Ahlman and Sharon Holland were identified as two of those residents who were greatly concerned of the possible mold presence. But while the suspicion prompted Holland to move out of her house, it shared that Ahlman was compelled to just endure it due to a financial difficulty.

Based on the report, the health effects of mold were the main sources of the people's concern over its possible presence. In the case of Ahlman and Holland, it relayed that it was particularly its impact on their lung problem and asthma respectively that they are worried about the spores' probable growth.

Below is an excerpt from the said report.

Signs of the water than swamped Gloria Ahlman's apartment are everywhere. A foot-high water line greets you at the front door.

"I would leave sooner, but I can't afford to do it," said Ahlman. "I don't know if there's mold. I have no idea what I'm living in. It's been a disaster trying to get things back to normal.

AGC Environmental said that mold infestation has many negative effects on health. Because of that, it said that its possible growth is indeed something to worry about.

However, it stated that there is a way to prevent those effects or at least keep them at a minimum. That way, it cited, is confirming the presence of the fungus early on via a mold inspection and air testing. With those methods, worrying unnecessarily is prevented if no mold is present and prompt remediation could be implemented if it is confirmed, it said.

Nonetheless, for a Florida air quality testing, AGC Environmental believed that it is the one that could provide the best service. And as it pointed out, it is for the reasons that its mold exterminators and consultants are certified experts and its processes follow the state's guidelines.

Potomac Shores in Prince William County offers southern-style homes

    - February 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Kerri Pagel hasnt yet moved into her new house in Potomac Shores. And while the Prince William County community is far from complete, Pagel says shes happy with how everything is taking shape.

A lot of things drew us to Potomac Shores walking paths, green space, town center things that make a community a home, said Pagel, whose husband, Josh, and their children, Campbell, 10, and Coen, 7, are among the 50 families who have bought southern-style single-family houses in the community. This is a development weve been waiting for for 10 years.

We liked the intangibles, Pagel added, the sense of community, which we can feel even before all the houses are up.

Thirty miles south of Washington along the Potomac River, Potomac Shores is a 2,000-acre community in the early stages of development.

Being built on rolling and wooded land, Potomac Shores is designed to be a mix of residences, retail, recreation and business with a focus on walking and biking. Bordered on the northeast by Powells Creek and on the east-southeast by the river, the land has sweeping water views. Historically it was a water-oriented community catering to fishermen.

Tidewater design: We worked long on creating a theme and distinctive design for the development, said Edward S. Byrne, vice president of project management for Potomac Shores.

We studied indigenous design and architecture across the South, in Williamsburg, Richmond and small-scale towns with comparable features. he said. We wanted a common Tidewater vocabulary that incorporated symmetry, wraparound porches, steeply pitched roofs and many windows.

Stan Brent said a beautifully designed house attracted him and his fiance to the community; they were the first residents to move in. I feel I am breaking ground for the homeowners that will follow me, he said.

The floor plan is smartly designed and gives us abundant footage, Pagel said. We needed two home office spaces plus bedrooms. We wanted bigger space for our children, separate bathrooms for them and a laundry room with space to fold the laundry.

Haynes Davis III said that standards of the homes are incredibly high, and features such as molding are included. Davis said he and his wife, Becky, recently closed on a property and watched their house come out of the ground.

    Pueblo recreational marijuana rules backed

    - February 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

City Council needs to craft some kind of marijuana policy for Pueblo residents, Councilman Steve Nawrocki said again this week.

    Steve Nawrocki

Can people smoke marijuana in their own yards or on their own front porch? Can businesses establish a marijuana-smoking area? Nawrocki asked Tuesday. Those are questions we need to answer because I believe there is confusion about what is allowed in the city.

Police Chief Luis Velez took a pretty hard line on the question last December as city police prepared for Jan. 1 and the legalized sale of recreational marijuana in Pueblo County.

Velez said the state constitutional amendment allowing the sale of marijuana banned it from being used publicly, which Velez said he took to mean anywhere outdoors.

I think most city residents would consider their yards and porches to be private property, Nawrocki countered.

Maybe, but city policy thus far has been front yards and porches are public places letter carriers, sales people and other visitors use front yards and porches. Backyards are considered private, however.

So until council tells Velez otherwise, current city policy is no pot smoking in front yards or porches. Take it inside or take it in the backyard.

Velez is scheduled to meet with council next Monday at its work session.

Recreational marijuana poses another challenge to council. While there is a moratorium on the city taking any action on recreational sale until March 31, the city has no policy on zoning, sales tax, or other issues related to recreational marijuana businesses.

Bathroom Relax: a Soothing Bathroom Experience

    - February 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (PRWEB) February 05, 2014

Superior Builder and Remodelers, an Oakland-based, residential remodeling contractor, today announced the launch of its new bathroom service called Bathroom Relax. It's based on the ideas of chromatherapy, a practice that uses light to enhance mood, promote relaxation and provide excitement to a homeowner's bathroom experience.

Superior Builders is offering a complimentary Bathroom Relax appointment for Bay Area residents who wish to add colored lights to their bathroom remodels.

Colored lights in the bathroom may see like a novel idea to someone remodeling a bathroom, but its been a regular feature at spas and resorts for many years, said David Lorber, owner of Superior Builders and Remodelers. Its now popular with homeowners because its more affordable. You no longer need to be on vacation to have a bathroom spa experience.

Chromatherapy is the use of colored lights to balance energy, wherever a person is lacking in vitality whether thats physical, emotional, or spiritual. There seems to be a power to color when it comes to releasing stress, Lorber added. Creating a colored light experience in the bathroom can have a positive impact on ones overall sense of well being.

Janet Bautista, who had her Castro Valley home remodeled by Superior Builders, had chromatherapy lights installed in her family's master bathroom and recommends the service.

I was determined to get color lights installed when Superior Builders remodeled the bathroom, explained Bautista. I knew adding automated colored lighting to my bathroom would be calming and soothing and it really is. Humorously, I always say to my husband Jerry, its the greatest shower in the whole world, but it really is. Its got steam, music, a massage function and, of course, colored lights.

The Bautistas' colored lighting control, which is mounted inside their bathroom shower stall, allows for a range of lighting effects. Lighting programs with names like Dawn, Dusk, Water Reflect, and Storm Cloud can be selected to create different lighting moods, all of which are calming in different ways, said Bautista.

In chromatherpy, colored lights are associated with different emotions and reputedly promote a sense of physical calm, mental well being and other healing emotions. Blue, for example, is often seen as a calming color. Red is associated with energy and power; and orange is linked with enthusiasm.

Lorber is clear to point out that Superior Builders and Remodelers makes no scientific claims to the healing powers of its Bathroom Relax remodeling service. Our Bathrooom Relax system is not a type of therapy or an answer for solving someones health issues, Lorber emphasized. But colored lights do seem to have some positive benefits. The colored lights add excitement to someones bathroom experience and seem to help a person unwind and relax after a busy day.

Tub and Shower Refinishing with NAPCO New Coatings Transforms Bathrooms

    - February 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Skokie, IL (PRWEB) February 05, 2014

Tub and shower refinishing using NAPCO new proprietary coatings gives homeowners a like-new tub or shower in a few hours with savings of 70% over replacement. Traditional bathroom remodeling often includes replacing the tub or the shower. This usually means several tradesmen, lots of dust, and a few days of work at the least. NAPCO coatings allow a quick refinish of a tub or shower, without little impact on the homeowner and the fixture can be used the same day.

Tub and shower refinishing is a process to refresh the surface of worn or damaged fixtures to like-new condition. The tub or shower is first prepped, including fixing minor repairs. A coating is then applied that gives the fixture a durable, glossy finish. Non-slip features can also be incorporated for bathroom safety.

According to Remodeling Magazine, a bathroom remodel returns, on average, 62% at time of resale. Homeowners looking to increase that return are choosing refinishing over replacement. Not only does refinishing save thousands over replacement but it involves one technician spending a few hours in-home.

According to Dani Nichols, Vice-President of NAPCO, Investment in home repairs have been deferred for the past 8 years and bathrooms are showing their age. A remodel that changes the color of an old tub or shower achieves home owner's goals without going over budget.

Turning back the clock on Sacred Heart church in Placentia

    - February 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Since it was first erected in the nineteenth century, Sacred Heart church in Placentia has not undergone any major construction until now, that is.

Sacred Heart church in Placentia has long been a distinguishing feature in the vista of what was known as the Great Beach of Placentia.

Time had taken its toll on the iconic church, with its distinctive tower reaching nobly into the sky. The roof was leaking. Much of the wooden exterior had succumbed to wood rot, and the doors were rusted and decaying. It was time to act. Now or never.

And so, on Oct. 5, 2011, members of Our Lady of Angels Roman Catholic Parish met to discuss the challenges that lay ahead. Their church, one that had been envisioned and erected over a century earlier, was in desperate need of attention. To save their church was vital in terms of its enduring function as a place of worship. Equally important was the fact that Sacred Heart church had become a significant part of the built heritage of the Town of Placentia. It meant something to everyone.

    Distinguishing feature

For much of its history, Placentia was characterized by the same types of buildings that could be found in most of the communities in Newfoundland and Labrador. Single storey rugged-looking houses and the well-known salt box house rimmed the roadways.

Nevertheless, in the latter part of the nineteenth century, the Placentia landscape changed dramatically. Take a look at the various photographs from the period and this change would be easy to see. It was at this time, beginning around 1886, when the Sacred Heart church was built. From that point, Sacred Heart church became a distinguishing feature in the vista of what was known as the Great Beach of Placentia.

From the time it was initially built, a moderate amount of changes have been made to the church. At the beginning of the twentieth century, a church bell was installed and some additional work was completed. Afterwards, in 1917, stained glass windows were installed. Later, around 1975, the church underwent a significant change to its interior.

Now, almost 40 years later, the sounds of hammers and other tools of the carpentry trade can yet again be heard as Sacred Heart undergoes its latest transformation.
