COLFAX The proverbial monkey is off their backs. Colfax-Mingos girls got their first win of the season more than a week ago, but win No. 2 has not been easy to come by. C-M looked as though it was poised to pull off a comeback attempt against the visiting Norse from Roland-Story, but a fourth-quarter run put away the Tigerhawks, 68-47.

We played an excellent game, despite the loss, C-M coach Michelle Grant said. We had a game plan to stop their offensive facilitator and we executed it exactly as we wanted.Unfortunately, doing so meant forcing them to make shots from the outside, which they were able to do in the fourth quarter.

C-M fell behind early as the Norse jumped out to a 16-3 run to start the game. R-S ran a 1-3-1 zone defense that was limiting the Tigerhawks to outside chances, but C-M had several inside shots rim out or hit the side of the rim. Freshman Alivian Haley drained a shot from deep to pull C-M within 10 before the first quarter buzzer sounded.

Foul trouble kept the game at a slow pace during the first half, allowing the Tigerhawks to hang around. R-S was in the bonus with less than two minutes gone from the second quarter. Up 17-7, senior Natalie Vance drained a three for R-S. Jessica Albright took advantage of her opportunity at the foul line by making 1-of-2. Back at the other end, C-M switched into a 2-3 zone, which limited the Norse opportunities to outside shots.

R-S couldnt convert on several outside chances, and the Tigerhawks got a spark as freshman Amy Russell entered the game and promptly stole a pass and went coast-to-coast, finishing through a foul and converting the free throw. Haley later sunk a foul shot to pull C-M within eight. Russell stole another one and converted the layup. Junior Kristen Waline knifed through the lane for a bucket before the half, putting the Norse ahead, 24-16.

R-S went on a 5-2 run early in the third quarter, but that was stopped when McKenzie Cogley converted a three-point play off an offensive rebound. Albright drove to the bucket for a pair and Jena Teed knocked down a floater, pulling C-M within four. A couple of minutes later, Breawna Schroder fed Russell in the post, and she converted to make it a two-point game.

Vance drove baseline and hit a floater to give R-S breathing room. Brittany Hammes converted a three-point play, and R-S led 38-31 following the free throw. Albright kept the Tigerhawks in it as she split the press and went right to the bucket for the easy two. A late free-throw line jumper by Taylor Olson gave the Norse a 42-35 lead heading into the fourth.

The final quarter was all Norse. Olson converted a three-point play to open things up. Cogley answered with a jumper from the elbow, but Hammes proceeded to knock down back-to-back threes from the corner. R-S closed it out from there thanks to solid free throw shooting.

C-M travels to Saydel tonight in the Tigerhawks third to last game of the season.

PEPPERELL -- Residents voted 83-31 at a Special Town Meeting Monday to appropriate $150,000 for mold remediation for the town's public-safety complex.

Combined with another $60,000 that was transferred from the Finance Committee's reserve account last month, the money will pay to clean up mold and replace the HVAC system in the building that houses the police, fire and communications departments.

"It's a safety issue that we have to make plans for," said Selectmen Chairman Stephen Themelis.

Town Administrator John Moak said the mold problem is partially a result of years of cutting maintenance budgets as the town tried to navigate through tough financial times.

"It's basically deferred maintenance that has happened over a decade that has let pipes sweat, and get into the wall board and things of that nature," Moak said. "That's part of the budgets that were cut back over the years."

Moak said the estimates for the project range from $180,000 to $210,000, but the town was asking for the higher amount to prevent a shortfall later.

"We can't come back to you if we're short, we need to keep going with the project. Hopefully it won't run that high," Moak said.

Although resident Phil Durno said the town should appropriate more than $150,000 in case costs rise once the project gets under way, Town Moderator Scott Blackburn said the amount of the appropriation couldn't be raised at Town Meeting.

Some residents raised concerns the mold remediation is an expensive but temporary fix for a building that is going to need major repairs.

Resident Justin Zink said the town should either completely renovate the public-safety complex or find the departments a new, permanent home.

Watch your step out there. You and your neighbors may have an unwanted skating rink on your front porches this week, and there may be more ice on sidewalks and driveways than usual.

That's because many stores haven't been able to keep deicing agents such as calcium chloride and rock salt in stock this winter.

In fact, calcium chloride hasn't been available in many locations since the last big storm on Jan. 21, and other store managers said they have been out of the stuff since December.

And they aren't sure when they will have it in stock again.

Spina said that the only deicers he had available Monday afternoon were the more expensive pet-safe solutions. Other area stores had even less.

"Right now I'm out of stock on all deicers," said Gary Malek, a manager at the Lowe's on Columbus Boulevard. "I had some this morning, and now it's all sold out."

Both calcium chloride and rock salt work by dissolving into the ice and water and lowering its freezing temperature. Calcium chloride is favored by consumers because it lowers the water's freezing temperature to 15 degrees and is less corrosive than salt to pavement. Rock salt, while less expensive, lowers the freezing temperatures to just 25 degrees and cause more surface damage.

At the Home Depot on Oregon Avenue, customers found noting but empty shelves.
