CEBU CITY -- More than 10,000 households in northern Cebu have received roofing materials from 21 non-government organizations in the nearly three months since Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) struck.
Based on a report provided by Marten Van Der Veen, Shelter Cluster information manager and a member of the International Red Cross in the Netherlands, at least 33,000 families also received tool kits.
Before the roofing materials were distributed, Van Der Veen also reported, a total of 54,693 households received emergency shelter, like tents.
But at least 17,000 families still need to be relocated.
After Yolanda struck the Visayas last November 8, the government said it would prohibit houses within 40 meters of shorelines. The storm killed more than 6,000 persons and injured 28,000 others. It also damaged or destroyed at least P36 billion worth of infrastructure, agricultural equipment and crops all over the Visayas.
In a separate interview, Representative Benhur Salimbangon (Cebu Province, fourth district), said he had to write former senator Panfilo Lacson to remind him that northern Cebu also needs to be included in the rehabilitation program of the national government.
He said he hoped Cebu would get a big share of the P34.6 billion the House of Representatives has allocated for the rehabilitation of areas damaged last November by Yolanda.
According to the Shelter Cluster Dashboard report, as of last January 19, a total of 103,000 households were listed in 16 local governments in northern Cebu as having been affected by the typhoon.

These 15 towns and one city lost P4.1 billion worth of crops, infrastructure and livelihood opportunities.

Sowing God's Word Transforms Our Communities By Mark Snowden
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (The Pathway) -- Missouri Baptists are being challenged to distribute God's Word this year as they engage the lost in servant evangelism projects. Light Up Missouri is a two-year initiative to transform communities with God's Word through servant evangelism. This is being done in days, seasons and moments of service.
Last year about 35 churches, associations and ministries were recruited to engage in distributing nearly 47,000 "Find it Here" New Testaments in a partnership between the Missouri Baptist Convention and the North American Mission Board.

"We have experienced a move of God this summer in our church and community," said Norm Howell, pastor of Skyline Baptist Church in Branson. After distributing 1,000 New Testaments within three miles of the church, Skyline had at least 25 additions by statement and baptized 11 adults, two teens and one child. Howell said, "I believe that the scripture distribution and visitation by our members has had a significant role in the new growth within our church."
Tree of Life Church in Kansas City had prayed for 50 souls to be saved, but according to their pastor Jerry Akins, "the Lord sent us 50 more." The church engaged in a season of service in the form of a feeding program last summer. After several days of activities for children in low-income housing, they distributed Bibles. "The gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was shared," said Akins. "Parents and children began coming to Christ."
St. Joseph Baptist Association took on one of the most aggressive distribution strategies. They sought to distribute 10,000 New Testaments through the summer in various servant evangelism projects in churches. "A pastor had not considered what his church was doing as to being seasons of service," director of missions Clyde Elder reported. "They were just ministering and witnessing to residents of a multi-housing community. So, he incorporated Bible distribution and was excited to see how open people were to taking a Bible and talking about it." Elder says it takes a God-sized vision. "Some of our pastors took a couple of cases of Bibles and came back quickly for more. They underestimated what they could do at different venues."
Kevin Kohler worked with Concord Baptist Association in Jefferson City during a missions project involving 200 students in servant evangelism projects last summer. He said, "New Testaments are important tools. I personally don't care for cold door-knocking. I feel service projects provide a much more personal connection and are a far more important relationship-building process. I love the neighbors to ask us what we are doing."

ALGONQUIN A group of property owners who have land along Algonquin Road want to tear down three buildings which are in the Old Town District.
The village board is scheduled to vote Tuesday on the request to tear down two commercial buildings and a garage at 107-111 W. Algonquin Road.
In December, the village's Historic Commission voted to deny the petition to demolish the buildings. The commission cited the historical significance of the buildings.
All three of the buildings are in "very poor" condition, and have numerous building code violations, according to village documents.
The siding, trim, windows and railings among other things all need repair or replacement. The inside has mold in the basement and roof leaks. The village has cited the property for numerous code violations and levied fines through the administrative adjudication process.
"Ultimately however, village staff cannot physically do maintenance and repair improvements for a property owner, and so this property has continued to have a blighting effect on downtown and continues to consume substantial staff time and resources," according to a memo written by Russell Farnum.
The building also has many structural problems and there are leaky pipes and cracks in the foundation. Repairs to the buildings could cost $100,000, according to village documents.
"Improving the structures from their current condition to be viable for business use would be very costly and it would still likely be a challenge to attract tenants given the abundance of existing commercial space downtown," Farnum wrote.
Facade changes to the properties have taken place over the course of time, and have no architectural significance, village documents say.
There are no plans for the site other than to remove the buildings and sod/seed the property. Any plan for site redevelopment would need Village Board approval.

Since late last year, Boeing 787 Dreamliner fuselage sections from North Charleston, S.C., have arrived at the Everett final assembly line seriously incomplete with wiring and hydraulics lines missing, according to multiple sources in the factory.
The poorly done work out of Charleston threatens to undermine the companys plans to deliver 10 Dreamliners a month and fulfill the much-delayed jet programs original promise.
Its snowballing. The planes are getting worse out of Charleston, said one senior Everett employee who oversees the production status of the airplanes.
Another Everett employee, a quality inspector, said the work out of Charleston had been very slowly getting better until late last year, but that now the curve has gone the other way, big time.
An engineer in Boeings South Carolina complex said mechanics there have been falling farther and farther behind since last fall, but management has insisted on sending unfinished planes to Everett to keep to the planned rate.
In a written response to inquiries, Boeing said its plan of rolling 10 Dreamliners per month off its assembly lines is on track.
While we have some challenges to address, we see no risk to the program, Boeing said. Right now, Boeing South Carolina is making its rate commitments.
However, with the planes rolling out of the assembly bays needing more fixes out on the flight line, it could be a while before Boeing actually delivers 10 jets per month.
