THV Extra: In-depth look at Johnny Cash boyhood home

    - February 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

DYESS, Ark. (KTHV) - "The Man in Black," "Ring of Fire," and "Walk the Line." ....All of these familiar phrases are linked to the legend of Johnny Cash.

But something else links the country star to the Natural State. Cash grew up in Dyess, Arkansas and an effort to restore his childhood home nears completion.

THV11's Dustin Wilson, along with photojournalist John Young, took us to the back roads of Dyess to show us his roots.

The top hand mounted his trusty steed And rode across the plain. He said, "I'll ride until setting sun Unless I lose my rein."

Although not as clear as they once were, the poetic words of Johnny Cash won't fade from the mind of his childhood friend, A.J. Henson.

"We thought we'd died and gone to heaven," said a reminiscent Henson.

Hope came out of the gumbo soil of the town of Dyess. The childhood home of Johnny Cash still protrudes from the unsettled ground.

Henson recalled, "We would have to get under the house and jack it up and put blocks under to make it level."

Only a handful of homes remain from the Dyess colony, a federally-assisted farming community of what used to be 500 families back in the 1930s.

Henson grew up around the Cash family and remembers the music legend as "J.R."

Cabinet to discuss proposals for restorative justice

    - February 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tthe package of justice initiatives also includes an overhaul of the probation service

The Government will discuss plans today to give victims of crime the right to accept reparation payments from the offender in question.

The objective is to provide for restorative justice within the framework of Irish criminal law.

Further justice initiatives for examination today by Ministers include new oversight procedures for the Garda Inspectorate and the Inspector of Prisons.

Also in the package is an overhaul of the probation service, which supervises offenders on the direction of the courts. The aim is to modernise the relevant law, and provide for a new inspector of the probation service.

The reparations proposal from Minister for Justice Alan Shatter would be restricted to the minor offences which are reserved for the District Court. The basic aim, however, is to reduce the overall number of custodial sentences for crimes at the lower level of the scale.

For example, the Ministers proposal would apply only to cases of minor assault and minor criminal damage where the perpetrator accepts responsibililty for committing the offences in question.

The payment of reparations would be overseen by the court, meaning the value would have to be acceptable to the judge. In doing so, the judge would be obliged to take into account the interest of the victim.

A further range of measures would modernise the execution of community sanctions by offenders.

These measures, set out in a Cabinet memorandum circulated by Mr Shatter, are included in a broader suite of legal change to be examined today by the Coalition.

Building work for a new Met Office in Tobago to start in a few weeks

    - February 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Story Created: Feb 3, 2014 at 12:45 PM ECT

Story Updated: Feb 3, 2014 at 12:45 PM ECT

THE construction of Tobagos new Meteorological (MET) Office will start in mid February, according to the Minister of Tobago Development, Dr. Delmon Baker. The $64 million office will be built adjacent to the fire service building at the A.N.R. Robinson International Airport. Dr. Baker told the media that Cabinet made the decision to build a new Met Office building in September 2007. On July 14, 2011, the Government after just one year in office took the decision to appoint NIPDEC to act as project managers for the design, construction and outfitting of the building. The construction is expected to be mobilised early in February, I am pushing to ensure that this occurs within the first two weeks, weather and all other matters permitting, stated Dr. Baker, who says he has sought the assurances of NIPDEC that local contractors, where possible, will carry out the building work. With the construction of this building, the Government is undertaking a training needs assessment for the facility and for the island of Tobago as indeed, we are doing for Trinidad and Tobago as a whole, to ensure that adequate staffing is available to meet with the needs of this new facility, he added. According to Dr. Baker, this will be the most modern facility on the island of Tobago and I am hoping that I can say at the end of fifteen months, that it came to the people of Tobago within budget and in the time lines that were ascribed when the original contract was put out; holding NIPDEC to that as you the people of Tobago can hold me to that in the first instance. I am putting my reputation on the line NIPDEC, he exclaimed. Meanwhile, the Chairman of NIPDEC, Hamlyn Jailal stated that NIPDEC will deliver the project on time and within budget. Eleven companies bought the package, while eight responded and Adams Project Management and Construction Limited was selected. This company has a rich legacy both in Trinidad and Tobago. This company has done work before in Tobago and we feel very confident that this contractor will deliver on time and on budget, as this is the experience we have had to date with this particular contractor for projects at NIPDEC, Jailal explained.

    Google to expand Pittsburgh operations

    - February 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Published: Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, 6:36p.m. Updated 3 hours ago

The Internet search giant Google Inc. said Monday it will become an anchor tenant in a six-story office building planned in the East End's Bakery Square 2.0 development.

Google has signed a lease for an additional 66,000 square feet at Bakery Square 2.0 to accommodate for natural growth in our Pittsburgh office, the company said in a statement.

It said local hiring will continue, but declined to offer specifics.

Bakery Square developer Walnut Capital Partners, based in Shadyside, hopes to begin construction on the office building in March. Google will occupy about a third of the building. Work is expected to take 18 to 24 months and cost at least $40 million.

It is part of more than $100 million in planned development in Bakery Square 2.0. Walnut Capital hasn't identified other tenants for the office building.

This really helps kick off Bakery Square 2.0, said Gregg Perelman, a principal with Walnut Capital.

Google's expansion on the site of the former Reizenstein Middle School had long been anticipated based on the company's explosive local growth.

Google, based in Mountain View, Calif., has steadily expanded operations since moving into the original Bakery Square development across Penn Avenue in 2010. Google occupies about 140,000 square feet in Bakery Square while employing more than 300 workers.

The new office building will be connected to the existing one by a three-level pedestrian bridge starting four stories above Penn Avenue.
