Feng Shui, the traditional Chinese study of geomantic omens usually for buildings or cemeteries, is producing exorbitant profits for fake fortune-tellers during the lunar new year celebrations.

In Nanning, capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, fortune-tellers are trying to tempt customers into their Feng Shui shops, which sell hundreds of charm bracelets, jade necklaces, Buddha statues and mascots of Qilin, or Chinese unicorns.

They claim that the lucky charms, which can cost more than 100,000 yuan (16,500 U.S. dollars), have been blessed by eminent monks and "will bring good luck" during the year of the horse, which comes seventh in the 12-animal rotation used by the Chinese to represent the year.

"Experts" in the Feng Shui shops also provide fortune-telling, saying that they can help customers pursue good fortune and avoid bad luck -- at a cost.

Zhang Yu, who lives in Nanning, went to a "free" fortune-telling session in a shop and was told she was going to have a bumpy 2014. Only the blessed jade stones in the shop could help.

"But the cheapest jade stone cost a staggering 1,980 yuan, which is ridiculous," Zhang sneered.

Feng Shui, literally meaning "wind and water", has been widely practiced in China for thousands of years, but it has been denigrated as superstition rather than recognized as a cultural phenomenon.

Feng Shui practitioners were usually consulted before the construction or renovation of a building.

Though the government has never banned the practice officially, Feng Shui is defined in Chinese dictionaries as "superstitious beliefs in ancient China".

But Feng Shui is attracting people into shops.

I dropped by Marites Allen's World of Feng Shui Store (WOFS) at Glorietta 4 to check out some items they have in store for the Lunar New Year.

WOFS is an international retail franchise shop created by Lilian Too from Malaysia. Allen is responsible for setting up its Philippine branches in selected malls around Manila.

WOFS has been a popular go-to place for everyone interested in feng shui charms and home items.

During my visit, I was happy to chat with their store assistant, Maria Larsamana, who was busy charging some items in a Tibetan singing bowl. She explained how their feng shui items can be beneficial to their customers.

"Our stores are not just for Chinese clients. We are patronized by Pinoys and other foreign tourists. Customers use our feng shui items to bring in positive energy into their homes and lives," said Larsamana.

Each feng shui item is charged using a Tibetan singing bowl

According to reports from modern-day psychologists, feng shui works through the power of the positive sub-conscious symbolism.

One week after a violence-marred demolition that saw more than 20 injured, several residents continued to defy authorities by maintaining their shanties along Agham Road in Quezon City.

At least 50 shanties were still standing at the center island of Agham Road as of 4 a.m. Monday, radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported.

While many of the families in the area had agreed to be relocated to Rizal, others chose to stay since their place of work was nearby, the report said.

On the other hand, the report said some militant groups urged the residents to think twice before relocating and to consider if their relocation sites have the basic amenities.

Last week, violence marred the demolition of the shanties, where residents threw objects ranging from rocks to bags with excrement at the demolition team.

Almost one ton of explosives inserted into 1,500 drilled holes were used on Sunday to raze the so-called "AfE Turm" ("AfE Tower"), standing at 116 meters (381 ft).

Police estimate that more than 10,000 people gathered in the center of Germany's financial hub Frankfurt to watch the spectacular demolition. The building is the highest-ever in Europe to have been demolished using explosives.

Explosives expert Eduard Reisch was in charge of blowing up the 50,000-ton skyscraper, which was completed in 1972.

"It is almost 100% possible to blow up such a building without hurting people or neighboring buildings," Reisch said before the explosion. Barriers of up to six-meters-high (6.6 yards) were erected around the skyscraper to prevent any damage to nearby constructions.

Water canisters, each containing 1,000 liters (264 gallons), were blown up along with the building to stop too much dust being produced. The whole area was sealed off, with 500 security helpers in attendance.

The AfE Tower until recently housed facilities of the department of social sciences and education at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University. It was briefly the tallest building in Frankfurt.

Two new high-rise office buildings are to be constructed on the site.
