The way Quebec politicians and others are carrying on, youd think that the automatic sprinkler system was an untried, still slightly sketchy, cutting-edge technology and not one proven up the yingyang in the 142 years since it was invented.
Its not a simple problem, Quebec Health Minister Rejean Hebert told reporters Monday at LIsle-Verte. If it would have been simple, it would have been done.
If the answer was simple? It couldnt be more simple: Order all care occupancies housing those incapable of self-preservation vulnerable by dint of age or physical or mental disability to be retrofitted with sprinklers.
Or take what Premier Pauline Marois, who this weekend visited the site of the horrific fire that killed 32 vulnerable old people last Thursday, said. If only we were able to stop this from ever happening again, this type of thing.
If only we were able to stop such fires?
Automatic sprinklers do precisely that. They stop fires in their tracks, contain them and contain the spread of poisonous deadly smoke.
For all the speculation now about whether the fire at La Residence du Havre was started by someone sneaking a smoke in his room, the truth is, if the joint had had automatic sprinklers, a dozen residents could have been puffing away in their beds and in the worst-case scenario, those dozen might be dead but no others.
Honest to Pete, if this is what passes for leadership in this country, we might as well take a page out of the book of Fitchville, Ohio, circa 1963.
In the early morning of Nov. 23 that year, fire destroyed the Golden Age Nursing Home in Fitchville, then an unincorporated township in a remote area about 80 kilometres west of Akron. The nearest fire department was in New London, about 10 kilometres away.
And, as the subsequent U.S. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) investigation later found, night telephone calls to the New London fire department were received at the local funeral home.

Sprinklers: Are they the answer?
Yes, if properly installed, maintained and inspected, automatic sprinkler systems can easily contain potentially fatal fires and prevent tragedies like the one in LIsle Verte, experts agree.
Trouble is, not all systems are kept up to date, they say and in some cases arent working at all. In fact, in some buildings there hasnt been water flowing through the pipes for years.
Sprinklers are reliable if the upkeep has been done, said Benot Blain, a Montreal city fire inspector from 2002 to 2012 who now has his own company, Blain Inspection.
If theyve been drained once a year to clear any debris in the pipes and if the water-intake valve is always left open, there shouldnt be a problem, he said.
But in his decade with the fire department working downtown and in Rosemont, Blain estimates 70 to 80 per cent of buildings in the city dont do routine maintenance of their sprinkler systems.
While most of those are warehouses and other non-residential buildings, Blain said hes seen big apartment buildings 16 to 20 storeys high whose sprinklers were neglected.
In one case, a building built in the 1970s had a non-functioning sprinkler system. Someone closed the intake valve one day, and no-one knew, Blain said.
When that happens, sprinklers give a false sense of security. People think theyre protected in case of fire, when really, theyre not.

OTTAWA The alleged ringleader in a teen prostitution ring shed tears as she listened to an Ottawa judge find her guilty of human trafficking, producing child pornography, confinement and other related offences Wednesday.
The 17-year-old, who had pleaded not guilty, is one of three girls who lured young victims through Facebook and other social media to a south end home where they would be prepared to perform paid sexual acts for male clients.
Ontario Court Justice Diane Lahaie is still only part way through her rulings on whether the defendant is guilty of more offences..
The three girls were arrested in June 2012 on a total of 74 charges. The victims were between the ages of 13 and 17.
Three years is the maximum sentence for human trafficking under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Another 17-year-old who pleaded guilty has already been sentenced to the maximum.
With credit for time served, she was ordered to spend another 152 days in jail and a further 76 days in the community under supervision as a gradual re-integration in society.
The third offender, an 18-year-old currently living in Montreal, has also pleaded guilty. Her sentence is pending a psychiatric report.

Moz has released the results of their 2014 Industry Survey, which sheds light on salaries for various roles, top marketing activities and metrics, the top 10 SEO tools, and how marketers are dealing with "(not provided)".
The data was once again compiled by Dr. Pete Meyers, who also compiled SEO industry survey data in 2012 and 2010 for the marketing software and analytics company formerly known as SEOMoz.
The median salary for those doing SEO was $60,215, which includes data from countries that span the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. The median salary for PPC was $69,010 and SEM was $64,460.

Google Webmaster Tools was the top SEO tool choice among all tools (paid and free). As you would expect, considering Moz collected the data for the survey, both Moz and Open Site Explorer fared quite well, coming in second and third place, respectively (Moz made note of this, noting that "as much as we love our own tools, we have to assume that our audience is a bit biased").

Content may be king, but web analytics was the top activity among all marketers, beating out content marketing, keyword research, social media marketing, and brand strategy.
"Interestingly, very few respondents (1.6%) listed their primary field as 'Web Analytics'. Analytics are a way of life across all online marketing fields. Content marketing jumped a few spots (from #5 in 2012 to #2 this year), although this may be due to broader adoption of the term," Moz explained.
Link building is no longer among the top five activities among respondents. Out of all the activities, marketers spend the least time on link removals.
