What might have been the ruination of Anthony Carrino and John Colaneris construction careers turned out to lead to their biggest break.
Not so long ago, Carrino and Colaneri were worrying about how they would pay back the loan on a big renovation project. Today theyre TV stars, familiar to HGTV junkies as the Kitchen Cousins.
Life has become a blur for the two in the last few years. I caught up with the cousins by phone one day last week, while Anthony was in their office in Jersey City, N.J., and John was driving to work.
They told me it all started in 2009, when the cousins construction company was sitting on a 22-unit condominium complex it had created from an old chemical company warehouse. The project had won restoration awards and earned notice from media including the New York Times, but this was the depths of the housing slump. The company was having trouble selling the units.
It was a scary time, Colaneri concedes.
A friend of his who works in public relations came up with the idea of holding a benefit in the building for earthquake victims in LAquila, Italy. Not only would it raise money for a cause close to the cousins hearts and heritage, but it would also get people through the door and create a buzz about the building, she reasoned.
It worked, both for the charity and the projects fortunes.
And it also sparked the idea of television.
Carrino and Colaneri were so charismatic onstage that the friend suggested they try to get a TV show. Theyd never considered anything like that, Colaneri says. They were just a couple of guys trying to make a go of urban redevelopment through Brunelleschi Construction, the company Carrino started with his father, Alfonso, in 2004.
She hounded me for a couple of weeks, Colaneri says, until he and Carrino agreed to let her follow them around to a couple of jobs and shoot some video with a pocket-size camera. She pitched her idea to a production company, which sent out a crew to make a more professional video it could shop to home-improvement networks.

Dave March takes a sip of his coffee and looks through the windshield of his car, which is idling in the water in Newport Harbor, next to his 65-foot yacht.
This has been a dream for 10, 15 years, he says, his gaze fixed toward Catalina. Every time I see that island, I think, Oh, its not that far.
March, 58, has spent more than a decade developing the high-speed amphibious car he is about to take to market for $135,000 apiece. He has taken deposits from the Prince of Dubai, tycoons in Silicon Valley and millionaires from around the world.
On this day, he hopes to prove the cars mettle by driving it from his WaterCar headquarters in Fountain Valley, Calif., to Catalina Island.
The only problem is he has never tested the car on open water, and 30 miles is a long way to swim.
March has been building and testing amphibious cars, or amphibians, for years. He filed patents for his first amphibian in 2003. Six years later, he set the Guinness World Record for fastest amphibious car with the Python, which has a 450-horsepower Corvette engine and can hit 60 mph on the water.
The car that March is test-driving to Catalina is the Panther, a smaller, off-road amphibian that is the entrepreneurial fruit of 12 years of trial and error and hundreds of thousands of dollars in research and development.
Ever since he posted a video online of the Panther driving on the freeway, scaling sand dunes and impressing scantily clad ladies at a lake, Marchs phone hasnt stopped ringing. The car already has been filmed in three reality shows, including an episode of the current season of The Bachelor.
He also has received a deluge of emails from buyers around the world.
The embassy of the United Arab Emirates has ordered one, and Sheik Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, the crown Prince of Dubai, has ordered six. Two of the most powerful men in Silicon Valley each have sent deposits with nondisclosure agreements to prevent their names from appearing in the media. NASCAR drivers are knocking at his door.

Pioneers.
That's what Realtor Brian Kleinjans of Northwest Realty Group thinks of when he sells someone a home in Foxtail.
"They're the first ones in this neighborhood," Kleinjans said. "They will set the tone for how it develops."
Hallmark Homes broke ground on Foxtail a year ago, and a third of the 36 lots in Phase 1 are already sold. "The activity is very brisk," he said. "Considering the state of the economy, that's good."
Foxtail is one of the newest developments in Post Falls. Wandering through the quiet neighborhood, gazing at the sweeping prairie and mountain views, you can't help but feel a sense of openness and peace. Although Post Falls continues to expand, the growth is primarily on the west side of Highway 41, whereas Foxtail is to the east. So, the area around it is still relatively undeveloped.
"It has a rural feel, yet it's close to everything," Kleinjans said.
The location is "really advantageous." Although you feel like you're living in the country, downtown Coeur d'Alene, the Valley mall, and Hayden are all 15 minutes away. It's ideal for couples who work in two different locations, Kleinjans said. "They can take Highway 41 to Interstate 90 and turn either left or right." It's close to the high school and existing elementary school (the development's master plan includes another elementary school). And with the improvements planned for Prairie Avenue, access will be even easier (the development is bordered by Prairie to the north.)
He said that there's a good mix of people buying in Foxtail, "retirees and teachers with kids, and everything in between."
The lots vary in size up to 1/3 acre, and are perfect for "baby boomers, empty nesters, and downsizers who want a nice home with nice amenities, but don't want as much yard to maintain any more."
"Housing prices rose 10 percent last year in our area, so houses are worth 10 percent more, as well," Kleinjans said. Housing values increase based on the desirability of a neighborhood. So this is the perfect time to buy in Foxtail and get in on the ground floor, while it is still affordable.
