The only thing that John Hall, principal designer at Hall Design Group in Chagrin Falls, requires of new clients at the start of a remodeling project is an open mind.
Then we can work through the planning process together, Hall said during a presentation on the opening day of the NARI Home Improvement Show running through Sunday, Jan. 26 at the I-X Center. The show gives homeowners who are planning spring home improvement projects an opportunity to see new products and talk with some of the areas top design/build companies and interior designers.
Everyone who starts a project needs to know if they define themselves as a DIYer, a DIYer who needs design guidelines or someone who needs a professional to do the job for them, Hall said.
During the initial phases, you should gather photographs of what you like, talk to friends and visit showrooms, home shows and model homes, he said. Houzz.com and Gardenweb.com are helpful websites that allow web browses to share photos and ideas.
Every job has three phases design, product and labor. The labor will make or break a job, Hall said. You shouldnt be in business if you cant return phone calls in 24 hours.
NARI Home Show visitors found ideas and inspiration at the Neighborhood Trends exhibit sponsored by Artistic Renovations, a design/build firm in Seven Hills. The display included a contemporary suburban living/kitchen space featuring a gas fireplace, custom cabinetry and backsplash tiles made of recycled glass. A modern downtown loft space featured furniture made from reclaimed lumber and LED lighting.
Were showing what is available in Cleveland, said Artistic Renovations president Ken Perrin.
The NARI Home Improvement Show takes place at the I-X Center this weekend. Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26. Admission: $14. Contact: NARIHomeShow.com

Fans of home-remodeling shows know the satisfaction that comes with seeing the finished product.
The big reveal of a decor nightmare turned homeowner's dream can be gratifying and inspiring. But designers and contractors urge anyone envisioning similar results in their own homes to be realistic about projects that will take much longer than a half-hour.
You have to remember it's a TV show, says Dave Seymour, co-host of A&E's Flipping Boston, with a laugh. If we showed you every single step, nobody would watch. You can only film somebody putting in a nail so many times.
The popularity of shows like Seymour's have more people thinking about home-remodeling projects, say local contractors and designers. That trend has pros and cons, depending on how realistic homeowners' expectations are, they say.
It educates them about the possibilities of creative spaces, says Liz Murphy, a Sewickley-based interior designer. All the shows have made the whole idea of interior design so much more approachable.
These days, more programs show both the ups and downs of home remodeling, which give audiences a truer sense of what the jobs can entail, Murphy says.
In some respects, the majority of the shows do educate viewers to the realities of renovations, she says. Now, we're seeing more that don't just tear down walls, and there's no glitches. The newer shows always have issues that arise. People are more conscious that things can go wrong. Budgets need to change. You have to plan for the unexpected.
Particularly when it comes to the time remodeling jobs take, some shows can be way off, Murphy says. Those shows often have sponsors who provide all the materials necessary to eliminate the usual weeks of waiting.
The ridiculous ones are the shows that concentrate on speed, she says. They drive me crazy. You can't force people to work that fast and guarantee it's going to be well-done.

As an act of disbelief, plumber Tony Kelly marched across the street from the house where he was working and knocked on a door. He had been told by some of his co-workers that he was working right across from where boxing legend Muhammad Ali lives.
Said Kelly, I thought it was a wind-up, so I decided to call their bluff. I knocked on the door and Alis wife Yolanda answered.
Realizing it wasnt a joke and being a huge Ali fan, Kelly was quick to make the most of the unexpected opportunity.
I just asked would it be possible for one of his greatest fans from Ireland to meet him. She said Of course and invited me in and there [was Ali] sitting in the living room.
Imagine one minute working on a set of busted pipes and the next, youre in the living room of one of your idols. It was a thrilling experience for the Irishman.
Tony Kelly had moved to Kentucky from Ireland after marrying his wife, Megan, in 2012. He was a big fan of Ali, whose roots many Americans dont know can be traced to the Emerald Isle. Even though he was initially skeptical, he wasnt going to pass on the potential opportunity. Thanks to his boldness, Kelly was able to wish Ali a happy 72nd birthday.
Kelly kept the visit brief out of respect for the Alis. That and matter the busted pipes across the street that he had been working on.
Before he went, Kelly was able to take a photo with his hero.
I was star struck, Kelly said of his experience. It was just great to meet him. I shook his hand. He posed for a couple pictures with me. Its very cool, Kelly said. Just everything about him, his attitude and way it changed the sport. The guy is a legend and all the work hes done for humanity as well.
This heartwarming story of meeting ones idol goes to show that you never know how a job, no matter how unglamorous, could bring you in touch with your favorite celebrities.
