Meters measure tilt of Big Thompson Canyon retaining walls

    - January 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Colorado Department of Transportation workers install a tiltmeter on the U.S. 34 retaining wall in the Narrows of the Big Thompson Canyon. The device, one of seven put in after construction of the temporary road, will alert engineers if the wall starts to shift. (Colorado Department of Transportation)

A solar panel at the side of U.S. 34 in the Narrows of the Big Thompson Canyon west of Loveland powers one of the seven tiltmeters installed on the retaining wall of the temporary highway. (Colorado Department of Transportation)

    Dear Buck:

On U.S. 34, in the Narrows of the Big Thompson Canyon, there are some solar-powered gizmos on posts on the railings, and one on a rock wall. What are these for?

    Signed: Canyon Curious

    Dear Canyon:

The gizmos are tiltmeters -- high-tech levels that were installed to let engineers know if the highway's retaining walls are starting to shift, according to Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman Ashley Mohr.

After the September flood devastated U.S. 34 in the canyon, crews were able to quickly rebuild the highway. But as nice as it looks, it's still just a temporary road, Mohr said.

So CDOT engineers installed seven of the devices in the Narrows to make sure the repairs hold.

"Our folks have done it because they want to make sure those walls are holding up through the spring runoff," Mohr said. "If that wall moves at all and begins to give way, we'll know about it."

Groton panel continues to seek ways to solve sewer issue

    - January 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

GROTON -- Looking to expand the role of the Lost Lake Sewer Advisory Committee, members brainstormed ideas with the aim of approaching selectmen for a change in its mandate.

Originally established to study septic conditions at Lost Lake, the committee's recommendation to build a $12.9 million sewer system that would have connected the neighborhood with a treatment plant in Ayer was rejected at a 2012 Town Meeting.

One reason for the rejection was due to the uncertainty that the source of the contamination of the lakes was coming from neighborhood septic systems. Instead, residents insisted a more thorough study of the area around the lakes be undertaken.

A reconstituted Lost Lake Sewer Committee was appointed and consultants were hired to proceed with testing, which proved inconclusive.

Findings did indicate unexpected "emergent contaminants" at different points, including those near the Water Department's Whitney Well site.

Emergent contaminants is a new category of potential pollutants of ground water that is little understood in how it travels in the groundwater or how much of a threat to people its presence might be.

Comprised mostly of prescription medicines, testing at two sites on the lakes indicated the presence of five kinds of drugs and chemicals, including tranquilizers, nicotine, insect repellent, pain relievers and medicines needed to control seizures.

Initial results of the testing indicated relatively low concentrations of nitrates and phosphates, the more common pollutants.

The results left the committee with little support for the installation of an expensive sewer system, particularly if that system could potentially address only part of the contamination problem.

"The testing raised more questions than it answered," said Chairman Jack Petropoulos Thursday.

Mother, daughter arrested for allegedly stealing packages from porches

    - January 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

EDMOND, Okla. Police in Edmond say they have arrested a mother and daughter from Del City who they say were caught stealing UPS packages off of porches in two neighborhoods.

On Wednesday night, officers say a resident reported seeing a woman take packages from his neighbors porch and drive off.

The caller gave police a description of the woman and the vehicle the alleged suspect was driving.

A short time later, Edmond officers spotted the vehicle.

Inside, authorities say they found packages from 15 different addresses from the Copperfield and Kelly Park neighborhoods.

Police arrested 37-year-old Tonya Young and 18-year-old Jayme Young.

They claim the alleged suspects stole everything they could get their hands on, including the kitchen sink.

One package contained a large copper sink that was about to be installed in one victims kitchen.

Both women are being charged with 15 counts of concealing stolen property.

Tonya Young is also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police: Mom, daughter stole everything including kitchen sink

    - January 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A mother and daughter from Del City have been arrested in connection with the theft of multiple UPS packages off porches in two neighborhoods, according to Edmond police.

Officers said they received a call Wednesday night when a neighbor saw a woman take a package off a neighbor's porch, run back to her car and drive off. The witness gave police a description of two women and the vehicle they were driving.

The women were taken into custody and police said they found 15 packages taken from addresses in Copperfield and Kelly Park housing additions inside their vehicle. According to investigators, Tonya Young, 38, and her daughter Jayme Young, 18, literally stole everything they could including the kitchen sink.

One package contained a large copper sink that was to be installed in a victim's kitchen, police said. Other items included medical supplies, clothing, food products, "Duck Dynasty" products, protein bars, video games and other miscellaneous items.

Both women were arrested on 15 counts of concealing stolen property. Tonya Young is also facing a complaint of possession of drug paraphernalia.
