LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville plumber decided to knock on Muhammad Ali's door near Prospect, but never imagined he would actually meet "The Greatest" himself.

"I was working at a house. It was just a normal day at work and guys were joking around with me telling me how Muhammad Ali lived next door andI didn't really believe them at the start," said plumber Tony Kelly

But the plumber, who is a huge Muhammad Ali fan, decided to call his friends' bluff and knocked on the door Friday, Jan. 17. He didn't realize Ali really does live at the home.

"Mr. Ali's wife, Yolanda, answered the door andI explained to herI was a fan from Ireland and she said Muhammad would love to meet an Irish fan," Kelly said. "He was unavailable, but she told me to come back in an hour's time."

So when Kelly returned to the house, the visit with "The Greatest" was more than he ever expected -- he didn't realize it was also Ali's 72nd birthday.

"He was just sitting there.I was star struck. It was just great to meet him.I shook his hand. Heposed for a couple pictures with me. It's very cool," Kelly said.

And once Kelly posteda picture of the two of them on his Facebook page, his friends in Ireland starting sharing it and Kelly says the picture went viral.

"I didn't think much of it.I didn't think it would actually catch on the way it did," Kelly remarked.

Kelly is back at work installing plumbing in a basement renovation, but he'll never forget his encounter with the boxing legend.

"Just everything about him, his attitude and way it changed the sport. The guy is a legend and all the work he's done for humanity as well."

This weeks sustained cold isnt just putting pressure on residents: Plumbing throughout the region is also being taxed.

Weve gotten a bunch of calls for both burst pipes and frozen pipes, said Mike Dollendorf, owner of Roys Plumbing in the Town of Tonawanda.

Its what happens when the temperature gets this cold and frigid winds blow into the walls where theres exposed plumbing. Damage can be extensive and expensive.

Dollendorf offered a few helpful hints at avoiding frozen pipes during cold snaps like these:

Keep the temperature inside of your house warmer.

Run a trickle of water from the hot and cold spigots of fixtures, especially the one with the longest run from the main water supply.

Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to let warmer air circulate.

Remove outside hoses, shut off the water line to any outside faucets and then open it to drain any excess water.

If your pipes do freeze, Dollendorf advises shutting off the main water supply. If a pipe does burst, that limits the amount of water that can leak into the home.

Thawing frozen pipes should be done by supervising a shielded lit lightbulb, using a hair dryer or calling a licensed professional plumber with special equipment.

Plumber offers advice for preventing frozen pipes

A West Side man trying to thaw frozen water pipes Tuesday twice had to call Buffalo firefighters to his home and prompted some cold weather advice from Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield.

The call for the first fire at 1177 West Ave. came in at 11:51 a.m., fire officials reported. The homeowner put out the fire in the first-floor bathroom wall before trucks arrived, and damage was minimal.

The first time we went to his house, he was using a hand-held torch, and we told him you cant use an open flame. So he went and rented an electric heat gun, Division Chief Patrick M. Britzzalaro said. Some of these heat guns give off temperatures anywhere from 1,000 to 1,400 degrees, depending on the model, and that is sufficient enough to ignite old dry wood in a house like that.

Its like a blow-dryer for your hair, but it gets a lot hotter and does not have an open flame, Whitfield said. So he put it in the wall in that confined space. The device heated up, melted and it started another fire.

The second fire call came in at 1:52 p.m. This time the fire traveled up the bathroom wall after the heat gun ignited wooden studs in the walls channels, Britzzalaro said. Damage was set at $10,000.

Most of the homes where pipes freeze occur in residences that are much older, and a lot of them do not have insulation, he said. This type of fire wont be the last one we have while temperatures are in the single digits and teens, unless we get the word out that you cant use an electric heat gun or an open flame.

Its not the pipe itself that ignites the fire, Whitfield said. Its the surrounding material. Oftentimes the pipes run under the floor or inside the walls, and that material is usually wood, and thats what starts the fire.

It may be a delayed reaction, Whitfield continued. Youre working in confined spaces where you may not see anything until the fire manifests itself. Once there is enough heat, oxygen and fuel, youll get a fire. We are talking substantial loss of property and potential loss of human lives.

A similar incident Jan. 8, a day after the blizzard, caused a two-alarm fire in a 2-story home at 200 Abbott Road in South Buffalo. The house was a total loss.

A tenant there was using a propane-fueled torpedo heater to try to thaw the pipes, police said. The blaze caused $120,000 damage and left four adults and one child homeless, fire officials said.

Theyre called pests for a reason.

This week at the Irrigated Crop Production 2014 conference in Lethbridge, southern Alberta agricultural producers and local crop experts were asked to lend a hand to the provinces task of monitoring the insects which negatively impact crop production.

Scott Meers, an insect management specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, said 8,000 field visits are conducted each year and many of them are done on a random basis.

We want pre-selected, pre-approved fields, said Meers, who added there is some understandable concerns on the part of farmers when researchers arrive unannounced The information will only be used for insect surveys. We want to control the types of fields we go into so the surveys have more impact and theyre more powerful.

Farmers interested in having their land visited will be asked to provide some information and sign up. Meers added that is just one way his department is looking to track insect movement and development. Self-checking fields and calling the Alberta Pest Surveillance System at 310-2777 is another way, as Meers also encouraged local experts to aid the cause.

If each agrologist did one field a day, wed have a great picture of what is happening here in southern Alberta. It would really help fill in the picture.
