The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills certainly were Monday night, as the ladies got into a boxing ring to learn self-defense while Brandi Glanville took the gloves off with her own father.

"I love that man like crazy," Glanville, 40, said of her father, whom she had upset by wearing a very revealing Oscar dress and also referencing his days as a hippie in her memoir Drinking and Tweeting. "I said he was a drug dealer. He was a marijuana grower."

Continued Glanville: "I haven't talked to him in months. He won't even answer my texts."

But she got the chance when her father and family attended a book signing at a gay pride event in her hometown of Sacramento, where Glanville was the featured speaker.

"I've never seen Brandi this vulnerable and nervous," said Yolanda Foster, who accompanied Glanville and served as mediator, therapist and friend.

Glanville, 40, had the crowd wish her father, Guy, happy birthday and shared the story of how her parents invited the son of their best friends to move into their home after he came out and was kicked out of his family's house.

Minister for Education and Skills Ruair Quinn: Government sources said the Minister does not want a similar situation to arise as happened in the UK some two decades ago where many dozens of institutions were accorded university status without sufficiently rigorous scrutiny.

Legislative proposals will be brought to Cabinet this morning paving the way for new technological universities to be established in the State.

Minister for Education Ruair Quinn will bring the general scheme of Technological Universities Bill to the weekly meeting of Government Ministers this morning.

The memorandum will give the legal underpinning that will allow new universities in the State for the first time since the University of Limerick and Dublin City University were given that status.

The other two main universities are Dublin University (TCD) and the constituent colleges of the National University of Ireland (UCD, UCC, NUIG, and NUI, Maynooth).

Comprehensive reviewIn a separate development, Mr Quinn will also be bringing the report of an expert group that conducted a comprehensive review of existing apprenticeship schemes in Ireland and which has recommended major changes for the future.

The review looked at traditional apprenticeships such as plumbing, carpentry and electrician-training and has also identified the need for training and new skills in more modern industry such as ICT, pharma, and green energy.

The heads of the technological university legislation will allow some of the institutes of technology in the State progress to university status.

Government sources said Mr Quinn does not want a similar situation to arise as happened in the UK some two decades ago where many dozens of institutions were accorded university status without sufficiently rigorous scrutiny.

The word university is very important, said the source. We want to make sure that we protect the word and the concept.

When the demolition of Westdale Mall begins later this spring, it will become part of a national trend of redeveloping hundreds of formerly vibrant retail centers.

Green Street Advisors of Newport Beach, Calif., has forecast that 10 percent of the nations 1,000 enclosed malls will fail by 2022. Many will be partially or totally demolished, converted to uses with significantly less retail.

Another report from CoStar Group of Washington, D.C., shows more than 200 malls with over 250,000 square feet have vacancy rates of 35 percent or higher. Age also appears to be a contributing factor as 86.5 percent were built before 2000.

Westdales deteriorating physical condition and the need to create a radically different mixed-use destination are cited as reasons for tearing down the majority of the 35-year-old mall by Frew Development Group of Denver, Colo., which is overseeing a $90 million redevelopment of the property.

During a recent tour of the central portion of Westdale, buckets filling with water from a leaking roof and skylights were abundant. A service corridor that the public never sees showed ample evidence of structural settling and damage to the buildings infrastructure.

The damage to the mall has resulted from decades of neglect, said John Frew, president of Frew Development Group. The 10-year roof that was installed 20 years ago could be replaced, but the concerns we have are water penetration to the electrical boxes and conduit, much of it running under the mall.

The front wall of the mall was not built on compacted soil and it has settled more than six inches. That is putting stress on pipes passing through the wall, causing horizontal cracks to form.

You finally have to ask yourself Do we put more lipstick on the pig, or do we start from scratch?
