A venue for one of Sir Peter Jacksons early films is in line for a New Zealand commercial project award.
The University of Canterburys Ilam Homestead, where much of Sir Peters 1994 movie Heavenly Creatures starring Kate Winslet was filmed, is entered into the awards which will be announced in May.
Many scenes for the film were shot in the homestead and its grounds. The listed heritage building was built around 1911-1918 as a replacement for the original 1860 building which was destroyed by fire.
Following its substantial damage in the earthquakes, the building has been sympathetically restored and strengthened. UC elected to strengthen Ilam Homestead to 100 percent of new building standard. It is now one of the few heritage buildings of its era in Christchurch strengthened to this level.
While the University contributed to upgrades to some utilities and services, over 90 percent of the cost of re-instating the heritage building was covered under the universitys comprehensive material damage insurance policy.
The homestead is built in an English Domestic Revival style. The architectural heritage of the house rests largely on the existing staircase, internal timber panelling and fire places.
Notable architectural features include the grand porte cochere entrance, red English bond brickwork cavity walls with tuck pointing at the ground floor, roughcast plaster to the first floor, the timber balcony and veranda to the northwest, and slate roofing.
The immaculate post-quake restoration, with wood panelling and period wallpaper, includes one of the few open fireplaces still permitted in Christchurch.
The New Zealand Commercial Project Awards have been established by a group of commercial contractors.

HYDETOWN Fire damaged the second floor of a Main Street home undergoing restoration on Saturday night, but there were no injuries, according to Chief Eric Nikolaison of Hydetown Volunteer Fire Department.
No one was in the two-story home, owned by the Beck family, when the fire was spotted someone driving by shortly after 8 p.m., Nikolaison said. A dog inside the home at the time was able to be saved by firemen, the chief said.
Hydetown, Chapmanville and Cherry Tree volunteer fire departments, along with Titusville Fire Department, were called to the fire next to the Oaks Tavern off Route 8 at 8:13 p.m.
Nikolaison said the cause of the fire was linked to a faulty chimney of a wood-burning stove.
The fire got into the wall and into the second floor, he said. The home has been undergoing remodeling.
There apparently was no insurance on the home, Nikolaison said.
Firemen returned to quarters after 10 p.m.

The Coronado Park Senior Village building is the centerpiece of the Coronado Park development as it takes shape on Friday, January 17, 2014, in Eagle River.
ERIK HILL Anchorage Daily News Buy Photo
WHAT: Coronado Park Senior Village, or CPSV, is a place for seniors, aged 55 and older, who raised their families and made their lives in Eagle River and nearby communities and who want to live independently, close to family and friends, in a way that is affordable to people living on a fixed income.
CPSV will consist of a four-story 56-unit apartment building. There will be a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments, all of which will be fully accessible and will include sight and sound equipment. The building is designed to meet the 5 Star Plus energy rating and will have the largest alternative energy system in a residential building in Alaska, comprised of an array of solar thermal systems, providing more than 50 percent of the energy needed for domestic hot water. There will be a mix of underground parking and surface parking.
The design and plan of CPSV takes into consideration the Eagle River Central Business Revitalization Plan and the Chugiak-Eagle River Comprehensive Plan Update. The development locates new housing within walking distance of downtown Eagle River businesses and services.
CPSV will accommodate residents with a mix of incomes, from market-rate units to units for residents with incomes equal to 60 percent of Area Median Income (AMI), as set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
