MOULTRIE Popular pre-moistened toweletts that are often advertised as flushable are creating clogs and backups in sewer systems around the nation. Moultrie is now facing obstacles because of these wipes, according to city officials.

This problem has increasingly over the past five years become a major issue for our Moultrie sewer system, Utilities Director Roger King said.

Just as disposable diapers are now considered a necessity, wet wipes have become essentials in the average parents arsenal, the city said in a press release. But the popularity of these one-time-use items isnt limited to infant backsides. Special-use wipes are being marketed for make-up removal, pet owners, day care centers, rest homes, computer users and the list goes on. Antibacterial wipes are available to clean just about every surface, from hands to grimy floors and bathroom mirrors.

A lot of them end up down the toilet, and the city said few are flushable. Well, they flush just fine, but the cloth like products dont disintegrate the way toilet paper does. Thats where it starts to cost The City of Moultrie money and ultimately all citizens.

Our lift stations are plugged up about once a week, King said. It has just cost us $18,000 to repair a piece of equipment due to these wipes. King said he has seen this problem increase 5 percent each year.

The city said its residents need to realize while companies may say their wipes are safe for sewers and septic, they do not break up like toilet paper. Wipes not only affect the city sewer system but it can also ruin septic tanks.

If its not toilet paper, dont flush it, King said.

Other common items that should not be flushed into the sewer system:

Medications (could end up in drinking water).

Plastic objects.

Syracuse (WSYR-TV) An emergency room is a destination for people with an urgent medical condition.

But some hospitals provide doctors on average more promptly than others.

The Federal Government recently released the wait times people can expect in emergency rooms throughout the country.

Among Central New York hospitals, patients can expect the shortest wait times at Crouse Hospital, whereas patients who go to St. Josephs Hospital Health Center will likely wait more than an hour:

In addition, they say the new emergency room facilities have altered their workflow and that the staff is learning how to use the new space more efficiently.

Crouses facility is decades old, despite being the most efficient. Staff say Crouse will soon feature improved emergency facilities.

We were originally, two years ago, at like 76 minutes. We've redesigned our entire front end process from the time when you enter to the time you see a provider to be as quick as possible to get the work up and care started, said Dr. Michael Jorolemon at Crouse.

The Toledo-area retail market improved considerably in 2013, fueled by new stores or expansions that pushed the overall vacancy rate down a full percentage point from the previous year.

According to the year-end report from Toledo commercial real estate firm the Reichle Klein Group, the overall retail vacancy rate shrunk to 13.2 percent last year from 14.2 percent a year earlier.

Perhaps even more impressive, the vacancy rate for anchor store spaces dropped to 9.8 percent from 13 percent a year ago, according to the report. The decline marked the first time since 2004 that the vacancy rate for anchor spaces in the Toledo market has been below 10 percent.

Overall, the retail market absorbed 377,150 square feet of vacant space in just the last six months and a total of 729,000 square feet for the year.

Youre seeing a continued recovery for certain, and its definitely a pleasant thing to see, said Kurt Pollex, a commercial real estate agent with the Reichle Klein Group who helped prepare the report.

The big box properties have either been resurfaced or filled. And the big box eyesores the vacant cinemas have been taken down. Its certainly more appealing visually, and the improvement makes less space available, Mr. Pollex said.

Reichle Klein said that a large factor in the reduced vacancy rate is the redevelopment or repurposing of commercial sites in the Toledo area instead of new development on greenfield sites, a process that remains dormant.

Speculative construction just isnt there and it will take time for that without having a tenant, Mr. Pollex said.

Construction will begin this month on a new restaurant near the Poston Butte Golf Course in Anthem at Merrill Ranch. The new restaurant will be open to the public and is expected to open in early 2015.

We are getting a lot of positive response from homeowners about this exciting news as this will be the first restaurant in the Anthem master plan, said Scott Turner, executive director of communities for PulteGroups Arizona division. Both Anthem residents and the surrounding community will benefit from this fantastic new addition.

Big new restaurant coming to Anthem

A North Carolina-based wood fire steakhouse chain restaurant will be the newest addition to the Austin Landing development, the company announced Wednesday.

Firebirds Wood Fired Grill is slated to open in a 6,800 square-foot facility in the fall. Construction is expected to begin in March.

"I absolutely think this will be a home run for the region," developer RG Properties President Randy Gunlock said in announcing the addition. "Firebirds is exactly the kind of restaurant this area is looking for, and I cannot wait to see it flourish in this market."

Firebirds is known for its hand-cut steaks, fresh seafood, chicken and rib entrees seared over hickory, oak or pecan wood. They currently have 29 locations across the U.S. including one in Niles, Ohio.

Vice President of Marketing for the chain, Stephen Loftis, said the Cincinnati-Dayton corridor has been on the company's radar for a while and the Austin Landing location seemed like a perfect fit.

Loftis said the new location is expected to create 85 to 100 new jobs. The restaurant will seat about 230 and feature an outdoor patio with a fireplace.
