ADT’s home security contracts: A protection racket?

    - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Summary: That "free" ADT home security system could end up costing you a lot of money if you want to escape from your contract.

In July of 2012, I sold my home in New Jersey and moved to South Florida. At the time, for the new house, I was looking for a comprehensive home automation solution that included broadband, subscriber premium television as well as home security/lighting & thermostatic control/fire & carbon monoxide detection.

I ended up going with AT&T U-Verse as my broadband and television provider. I really wanted to get AT&T Digital Life, which would have allowed me to do all of the above from a single application, but the company was about six months away from deploying it in my community.

Rather than go without a security system, I signed up (through an AT&T referral link during U-Verse provisioning, which almost certainly netted them revenue) for ADT.

I also ended up buying a NEST for home thermostatic control because ADT didn't have an equivalent product at the time.

For the ADT setup, I paid a $77.00 installation fee and I have a recurring bill for central station monitoring that is $52.99 a month. I thought it was a relatively good deal at the time, and the security monitoring and mobile app, ADT Pulse, has served its purpose.

But I've always wanted something much more integrated that did more. Google's acquisition of NEST this week for $3.2 billion has yet again piqued my interest in AT&T Digital Life, which is now avaliable in my area. ADT now has a comparable system, but I would prefer to deal with one vendor.

I had the AT&T sales technician over this morning to see what it would take to replace the NEST, the ADT system and add some additional functionality, which includes smartplugs for interior and exterior lighting automation control.

The equipment setup cost would be $450, and the monthly bill about $50.00. That would include a single smartphone/tablet app as well as a web portal that I could use to control everything in my house.

I was ready to sign on the dotted line and schedule an installation appointment, but I realized that there was still some time on ADT's central station monitoring contract.

Most of the modern households consist of 2 to 3 members who are often away from the house on work. Such circumstances make middle-class homes an easy target for burglars. Security System Companies – Best of 2014 List Available at SecuritySystemReviews.com

    - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Albuquerque, New Mexico (PRWEB) January 16, 2014

Responsible and careful homeowners are always on the lookout for the most reputable and reliable company to provide their home security system. But for first-time clients, how do they know where to look and which is the best company for their family?

SecuritySystemReviews.com provides homeowners with the best information on the market and which companies are accessible in their area. There are a lot of considerations when deciding on which company should provide the security system. Clients have to think about cost, accessibility in their neighborhood, technology, user-friendliness and a lot of other factors before they decide. It is also possible to not give too much thought into the home security system for the home, but that just means the client believes in a brand or wants the security company to install the best system out there.

SecuritySystemReviews.com recently released the best security system companies for 2014 in a great, comprehensive list. For people without a lot of time to look through client reviews and other websites, this site just gives homeowners the things they need to know. Unbiased experts in the field of home security give clients a preview of what the latter can expect when they contract with a certain company. Potential buyers can use at-a-glance information or find out more about the company theyre looking into.

Security system reviews are great ways for potential buyers to determine which company is the best for their home. Sometimes, choosing the most popular or top company isnt in a homeowners best interest. They have to see if they want a tech-based system, a DIY system that involves mostly traditional hardware, a comprehensive system or something that mixes all sorts of measures to fit their home. Keep in mind that the home a client needs to secure could be for a vacation spot or a vacated city apartment.

Potential buyers are urged to conduct their own assessment of their home and list down the possible solutions they want security companies to install. At the same time, its also important for clients to have an open mind and to trust in the expert knowledge and years of experience security system companies bring to the table. Its best to adapt both modern and traditional measures in protecting a home.

Clients should also understand that the right company to choose in providing your home alarm system is the one thats most accessible and reliable in your area. Especially for users who want a wireless system, the best security system companies are the ones who use their own network in the local area. Why? Companies that are close by and have the infrastructure to respond to problems, questions and actual intruders are the best.

But what if there are a lot of home security system companies in the area? Which one then? Still, SecuritySystemReviews.com covers all the bases and gives potential buyers the list of the best companies for 2014. The coming year brings about new challenges and new ways for intruders to enter peoples homes. The website ranked the companies in terms of expertise, cost, stability, flexibility and other important factors. Taken into consideration also is the adaptability a company has when facing new trends in intrusion.

Keep in mind that a home security system company also has different alarm and security systems available for every need. Choosing the company is simply the first step.

Former Bashara handyman gets in trouble in prison – over horseshoes

    - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Joseph Gentz, who is serving prison time in the killing of a Grosse Pointe Park woman, was accused of threatening behavior and disobeying an order in prison, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections.

Gentz who has said he killed Jane Bashara at the direction of her husband, Bob Bashara pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 17-28 years in prison. Bashara, who has maintained his innocence, is charged with first-degree murder in his wifes death.

According to a misconduct report, Gentz came out of an equipment shed at the Macomb Correctional Facility on Oct. 8 with four horseshoes and said, Im taking these back to my room.

An officer told Gentz to stop and put the horseshoes on the ground, the report says. But, according to the report, Gentz turned and, with the horseshoes in his hand began talking in a very loud, aggitated [sic]voice that he wanted his i.d., which he said kept being taken from him.

The report says the officer again told Gentz to put the horseshoes down, but Gentz did not comply.

The reporting staff member wrote that Gentz was acting erratically and I did feel in danger for myself & other staff & prisoners around.

That wasnt the first time Gentz has been in trouble in prison. According to a misconduct report, in March 2013 he defied an order to go back to his prison cell.

How to Install Gutters: The Family Handyman

    - January 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Step 1: Planning the project

    1 of 1

Almost all home centers and full-service hardware stores sell gutter systems that are designed primarily for easy installation. But with just a little bit more work, you can use these same parts to put together gutters and downspouts that are stronger and better looking too.

Evaluate and plan the project Installing your own gutters can save you substantially over professionally installed gutters, but there are a few pitfalls to watch out for. Inspect the fascia and soffit (Fig. B) for signs of rotted wood, which will need to be replaced before you put up the gutters. Many houses have a trim board or crown molding nailed to the fascia just under the shingles. Youll have to either remove this as we did or add a continuous strip of wood under it to create a flat plane for the gutters. In either case, prime and paint bare wood before you hang the gutters.

Draw a sketch and measure your house Fig. A shows an example of a gutter system for a typical house. Record the length of the gutter runs and mark the downspout locations. Then count up the inside and outside corners and end caps (note whether they are right or left ends). Measure the height of downspouts and add 4 ft. to each for the extension away from the house at the bottom. Each downspout requires three elbows. There are two types of elbows that turn either to the front or side of the downspout. Most installations require only front elbows, but occasionally you may need a side elbow, usually to turn the downspout extension sideways. Here are a few planning tips:

    Figure B: Mounting details

Measure the horizontal gutter runs and downspouts and identify the parts you'll need.

Cut the front and back sides with a tin snips. Bend the gutter and cut the bottom.
