What you need to know about an audiologist

    - January 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    What is an audiologist?

Audiologists, who have earned undergraduate and doctorate degrees in the field of audiology, evaluate and treat patients with hearing and balance disorders. Audiologists determine the type and severity of hearing loss and develop a treatment plan, which may include fitting for hearing aids and assistive listening devices.

Who is likely to need an audiologist?

Hearing loss is the third most common health problem in the United States, and contrary to common belief, it does not occur only in elderly people. More than one-half of the 36 million Americans with hearing loss are younger than age 65. Anyone with any degree of hearing loss can benefit from an audiologist's expertise.

    What causes hearing loss?

One of the most common preventable reasons for hearing loss is exposure to excessive or consistent loud noise. Other reasons for hearing loss include ear disease or trauma, family history and genetics, certain illnesses and medications, and deterioration of hearing due to the aging process.

Who is most likely to have hearing loss related to noise?

Occupations and pastimes commonly associated with hearing loss include musicians and people working in the music industry, farmers, military members, pilots, certain dental/medical occupations, motorcyclists, hunters and target shooters and racers. Also, hearing loss can be related to home or every day activities such as lawn mowers, vacuums, drills and saws.

What are the symptoms of hearing loss?

Common symptoms include tinnitus (ringing of the ears); difficulty communicating, particularly in crowds or where there is background noise; frequently asking others to clarify conversations; muffled speech; and avoiding or withdrawing from social situations.

    Downtown Plattsburgh business landscape changes

    - January 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PLATTSBURGH Some new faces are visible in downtown Plattsburgh.

Carolyn Tetreault opened A Beautiful Mess gift shop at 74 Margaret St. on Nov. 30. There is a second entrance at 43 Durkee St. and up one flight of stairs, which provides easy access from the Durkee Street parking lot.

Tetreault said she used to own The Station Cafe and Gifts in Chazy until it closed in September 2011.

I really missed the whole atmosphere of the business so I knew someday I would open another gift shop, she said.

    Former Merkels store

Tetreault, a certified public accountant for more than 20 years, continues that practice in Chazy and hopes to add new clients in the Plattsburgh area. The new space has its own office space, so she can concentrate on that when business is slow at the gift shop, as well as meet with clients before or after store hours by appointment.

The new store was once home to Merkels department store. The interior still features brick walls and a tin ceiling, features that attracted her to the property.

A Beautiful Mess specializes in unique gifts, including re-purposed furniture she finds at flea markets and yard sales. The sales counter is a antique buffet she found at a yard sale and converted.

The shop offersMaison Blanche Paint Co. paints for restoration of older furniture pieces. Tetreault plans to offer workshops to show people how to restore their own pieces of vintage furniture.

She carries the Homestead Maple products line, produced by Angela and David Swan in Chazy. Also available are skin-care products from the Farmhouse Fresh line, which features natural vegan, gluten-free,paraffin-free products.

    Protesters ‘blockade’ NSW mine project

    - January 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Protesters have launched a blockade at Whitehaven's controversial Maules Creek coal mine project to stop construction at the site.

Anti-mining alliance Lock the Gate said the blockade began on Monday at the site near Boggabri, in northwest NSW, and aimed to turn back "vehicles seeking to clear the forest for construction of rail infrastructure".

"Protesters have established a blockade at the edge of the forest, and are preventing bulldozers from felling trees for an access road," Lock the Gate said in a statement.

"Construction work has been halted and the protesters are vowing to remain in place."

The group claims the project will clear-fell a large area of the Leard State Forest that comprises endangered woodland and wildlife habitat.

"It's opposed by members of the local farming community," Lock the Gate added.

In December, protesters blockading at the mine site were arrested by police.

That action came after the Federal Court dismissed an application by the Northern Inland Council for the Environment (NICE), which had called for the approval granted by former environment minister Tony Burke of the $767 million Maules Creek mine to be overturned.

Whitehaven has previously said the project will create 800-plus jobs and had support from most local residents.

Mine construction is due to begin early this year.
