Crews working to clean up after pipe burst in Lower Merion Township Building

    - January 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Planning Commission meeting at the Lower Merion Township Building was cut short Tuesday after a sprinkler pipe located in the hallway outside of the board room burst.

Fire units responded to the scene while commission members and those in attendance evacuated the building.

On Wednesday morning, township Public Information Officer Tom Walsh confirmed the broken pipe was weather-related. In the extreme cold, the pipe had frozen and burst.

Occurring in a stairwell beyond the board room on the second floor, water was pouring from the sprinkler system down the stairs. The break in the sprinkler system caused fire alarms in the building to go off. The Merion Fire Company of Ardmore responded to check the building.

The break occurred about an hour and a half into the planning meeting, not long after Dranoff Properties had completed a presentation on its proposed Cricket lot project. Planners were discussing an application by Bryn Mawr College for demolition and reconstruction of a part of the Haffner Hall dormitory when the decision was made to evacuate the building. Still to be heard on the agenda was an application regarding a preliminary land development plan for an addition to Welsh Valley Middle School. It was not known Wednesday morning whether the meeting could be rescheduled this week.

After the pipe break, Walsh said a number of Public Works employees were called in to clean up. Continued...

As of Wednesday, he said the affected sprinkler head had been replaced and the system reset. A small hole was cut in the second-floor ceiling to allow heat to reach the area of the pipe and prevent re- freezing.

A clean-up crew was scheduled to come in Wednesday to determine what materials, such as carpet, would need to be replaced for mold prevention, but Walsh said damage to the building was believed to be minimal.

The Township Building was open for business Wednesday, and Walsh said a scheduled meeting of the board of commissioners for Wednesday night would be held.

Fire units responded to the scene while commission members and those in attendance evacuated the building.

Event sheds light on human trafficking

    - January 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Panelelists, Dr. Daniel Broughton, Patty Wetterling, Leah Faust

MASON CITY, Iowa - Each year, an estimated 800,000 children are reported missing.

Thats according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Saturday, an event in our area is shedding some light on the issues of child abuse and child sex trafficking.

For Patty Wetterling, it's a subject that hits close to home.

In 1989 her 11-year old son Jacob was abducted near their St. Joseph home, and to this day he hasn't been found.

Shortly after he went missing, Patty founded the Jacob Wetterling Foundation and has become an activist for missing and exploited children.

Now she's sitting on a panel at an event called "Breaking the Chains of Modern Slavery."

"We weren't thinking, we simply weren't thinking, who would do that and I think we should be that shocked and that surprised."

Many believe something like sex trafficking could never happen in their communities, but these panelists are bringing to light the harsh reality, that sexual exploitation of children can happen anywhere.

How to Clean Septic Tanks | eHow

A septic tank is commonly used in rural areas where there is no connection to the main sewerage system and, according to the American Ground Water Trust, around a third of American homes are serviced by a septic tank. The tank will be buried somewhere near your home and the waste is delivered to it via a pipe leading from the house. If you have a septic tank, it is important to keep it clean and in good order because if your tank develops a serious problem, it can be expensive to fix.

Unscrew the lid on top of the filter unit to expose the filter. Wearing the gloves and goggles, pull the filter out. Attach the hose to a faucet and hose down the filter until there is no waste left on it. Make sure that the water always is facing away from you as you do this. Replace the filter and screw down the lid.

Contact your local authority to see if they can recommend a cleaning contractor, as some states insist that cleaners of septic tanks be licensed. Cleaning septic tanks is a specialized job and you should always use a reputable professional. You also can ask friends and neighbors for a recommendation. The contractor will back his truck as close as possible to your drain and insert a hose into your septic tank. The contents of the tank will then be pumped into the back of the enclosed truck. The contractor also may hose down the inside of the tank to remove any debris that may have become lodged, This water also will then be pumped out.

Introduce a natural bacterial product such as BioGest to optimize the natural bacterial activity inside the tank. These bacteria break down the waste allowing liquid to rise to the top and "sludge" to form at the bottom. These bacteria balancing products come in sachets that can be introduced either directly into the septic tank or via the toilet, and will maintain the bacterial levels within the tank.

Never flush away cat litter, sanitary products or anything else that could clog the system.

Do not use anti bacterial cleaning products on a regular basis as these will interfere with the natural bacteria that are keeping your septic tank clean.

    January 11, 2014 Wheelhouse Restaurant construction on-going

Mary Meaux The Port Arthur News The Port Arthur News Sat Jan 11, 2014, 12:47 PM CST

PORT NECHES Construction of the Neches River Wheelhouse restaurant is moving along at a steady pace with a possible opening date in late March.

Bert Lamson, one of a group of private investors in the project, said recent rainy days have slowed down the construction a bit but not much.

The building is almost dried in and the parking lot has been poured, Lamson said of the restaurant to be located at 720 Lee St. adjacent to Port Neches Riverfront Park. Once the building is dried in and weather-proofed we will start working on the inside.

The investors are also mulling over the menu for the new restaurant that will serve Cajun/seafood type food as well as burgers and po boys.

Once open, the restaurant will have a maximum occupancy of 260 people and feature a 12-foot porch in front as well as another 12-foot porch on top.

The idea of a waterfront restaurant was brought to the Riverfront Development Authority in May by Lamson. From there, the issue went to city council, the planning and zoning commission and the citys economic development corporation.

In August, the city conveyed the property to the Port Neches Economic Development Corporation, as per government code, then sold the 2.5 acres of land for $1 to the investment group. The land is appraised at about $550,000.
