Louisiana State, Penn State and University of Vermont at the forefront of groundbreaking technology
WASHINGTON --Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced agricultural grants for Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices to reduce the use of potentially harmful pesticides and lower risk to bees all while controlling pests and saving money.
These collaborative projects can provide innovative solutions to reduce pesticide risks to pollinators and crops, said James Jones, assistant administrator for the Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention. Initiatives such as these will encourage others to adopt promising technologies and practices across the nation to reduce pesticide risks while maximizing crop production and protecting public health.
IPM relies on easy-to-implement, environmentally-sensitive practices that prevent pests from becoming a threat. These practices involve monitoring and identifying pests and taking preventive action before pesticides are used. If pesticides are needed, methods such as targeted spraying may be used. These grants will expand public-private stewardship efforts and reduce pesticide risk in agriculture.

The Louisiana State University project to minimize impacts to bees from insecticides used in mosquito control. Mosquito control is critical for public health; however, insecticides can be hazardous to bees. Bees are essential for crop production and ensuring a healthy food supply. Practices and guidelines resulting from the project will be distributed to mosquito control districts and beekeepers throughout the U.S.
The University of Vermont project to reduce pesticide use and improve pest control while increasing crop yields on 75 acres of hops in the Northeast. The awardees will also develop and distribute outreach materials to help farmers adopt these practices. The projects goal is to reduce herbicide and fungicide applications by 50 percent while decreasing downy mildew, a plant disease.
The Pennsylvania State University project to protect bees and crops by reducing reliance on neonicotinoid pesticide seed treatments and exploring the benefits of growing crops without them. IPM in no-till grain fields will be used to control slugs and other pests that damage corn and soybeans. Researchers will share their findings with mid-Atlantic growers and agricultural professionals.
Protection of bee populations is among EPAs top priorities. Some of the factors that contribute to the decline in pollinators include: loss of habitat, parasites and disease, genetics, poor nutrition and pesticide exposure. EPA is engaged in national and international efforts to address these concerns. The agency is working with beekeepers, growers, pesticide manufacturers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and states to apply technologies to reduce pesticide exposure to bees. These efforts will advance best management practices, enhance enforcement and ensure that real-world pollinator risks are accounted for in our pesticide regulatory decisions.

RIDLEY PARK The boroughs I-95 billboard flap was in full flapping mode Tuesday as residents in the area of Hetzel Park awoke to find a massive piece of shredded vinyl whipping about the 111-foot structure.
I came down around 6:30 this morning to get breakfast, looked out my patio doors and saw a big section of it blowing in the wind, said Stull Road resident Michael OBrien. Thankfully, part of it got hung up on the top of the billboard or it could have easily blown across six lanes of I-95.
One of the chief critics of the boroughs decision to locate the billboard next to Hetzel Park, OBrien said the mishap illustrated the potential danger of placing a massive steel structure in a residential neighborhood.
I think it reinforces what we have been saying all along that it is unsafe to have something like this in the middle of a childrens park, he said.
Owned by Berks County-based Lamar Advertising Co., the billboard has a south facing electronic display and a traditional, or static, facade on its north side. Constructed last August and September, it is about 60 feet wide and went live in early November in spite of protests from many who live in its shadow.
The piece of vinyl that tore away did not feature an ad but rather a generic sky scene thought to be more appealing than the underbelly of the billboard.
I know that some people will want to roll this into a large snowball instead treating it for what it is, an individual, isolated maintenance issue, said Borough Manager DawnMarie Human. We handled it just like we would if we had discovered a detached piece of vinyl on a house or business. We gave them a courtesy call.
Lamars general manager, David Peacock, sent one of his crews down to remove the damaged sections of the sign. We dont know if it was just the wind or a piece of faulty vinyl, he said.
Hetzel Road resident Bob Webber estimated the vinyl and at least one piece of metal started to come loose at about 3 a.m.
Whether it exists in a safe manner or not is certainly (a concern) but people here are irate because they dont feel the thing should have built here in the first place, said Webber, whose property is located about 50 yards from the base of the billboard. Continued...
