Winter is a Treacherous Season for Trees, Giroud Tree and Lawn Provides Tree Service Tips to Help Philadelphia …

    - January 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) January 09, 2014

As winter roars through Philadelphia, homeowner need to be aware that snow, ice and high winds can cause serious damage to trees. Giroud Tree and Lawn provides tree service tips including hazardous tree removal, homeowners can use to protect trees and property from damage when winter storms strike.

Winter can be treacherous for trees. says Lou Giroud, President, Giroud Tree and Lawn and ISA Certified Arborist. Based on decades of winter storm experience, the trees most likely to be damaged in a storm are evergreens such as White Pines and Arborvitae as well as trees that have not been recently inspected or maintained.

Homeowners can take the following steps to protect trees this winter. 1. Hazard Inspection: Have an ISA Certified Arborist do a root to crown inspection to identify hazards such as cracks, weak limbs, deadwood or unsafe root systems. 2. Tree Removal: Dead trees are a hazard and must be removed. Winter is an especially good time for removals since the ground is hard and there is less risk of damaging understory plants and lawns. 3. Winter Pruning: Two types of pruning are most critical in the winter: deadwood removal and reducing wind resistance. Selectively thinning branches helps the wind to move more easily through the tree and prevents uprooting. However, never thin more than 25% of a trees crown at one time. Additionally, dead branches should also be removed since those are the first to break in a storm. 4. Tree Cabling to prevent splitting: Trees with multiple trunks or weakly attached limbs are prime targets for splitting. To successfully secure a tree, use a tree service professional with the knowledge required to select the best cable system for each trees specific situation and install it at the right tension and location in the tree. 5. Shake Ice and Snow off shrubs and small trees: Use a long pole or rake to gently lift branches and dislodge snow or ice. The heavy weight can cause trees and shrubs to break or split. Bradford Pears, Birches, White Pines and Arbor Vitae are most at risk.

Finally, professional certification and the tree industrys seasonal slowdown are two key factors in purchasing tree service in winter, says Mr. Giroud. Heres what homeowner should consider: 1. Is the tree service representative an ISA Certified Arborist. The ISA, International Society of Arboriculture, is the professional association of the tree care industry. 2. Tree service companies are traditionally slower in the winter and as a result pricing is often at its most competitive level.

Together, both factors make a winning combination for homeowners and trees, concludes Mr. Giroud.

We have a cute little 1930s kitchen with very worn tile countertops. I want to replace and am looking for a good recommendation for someone to do the work. I've considered going with a non-tile option and have heard Sullivan's is great but I don't want to ruin the 1930s charm. Does anyone still do tile countertops? Any help/recommendations are greatly appreciated...thanks! nicky

Hello, I'm looking for an inexpensive countertop installer. I have a small kitchen with only 12' of linear feet in a straight run, plus backsplash. We haven't decided on material, don't know if this matters when looking for installers. Possibly quartz or some type of stone. We also have a tiny area above the backsplash that could use some tile. Thanks! Carmen

I'm looking for someone to install tile on my small bathroom floor that presently has sheet vinyl. Not sure what condition the subfloor is in but there's the possibility that it's not in great shape and may need to be replaced. I usually like to work with someone who is licensed. Thanks. Need new flooring

He began presenting us many options to choose from, displaying admirable photos of bathrooms he remodeled. We were so impressed not only with his work but with his diligence, knowledge, and care, through this remodeling. He explained in details what is the best for us and why. He is a true professional in the "tile world" ! So happy to meet him!

Gelu Gabriel Ilie is a real artist! His work is state of the art! Our very old bathroom - over 50 years - now looks marvelous! Gelu Gabriel Ilie made our dream come true! He is "present" in our home due to his exceptional work! The job was completed as scheduled showing respect for us and his loyalty to the construction profession. Please, come and see! Need bathroom remodeling? Please, call Gelu @510 516 5073 or vizit: http://www.gelu-construction.com .He is the best! Lisa

I am looking for an expert in laying tile to install plain, square white tiles on my bathroom walls (floor to ceiling). I am looking for someone who is really good at putting the tile in precisely, and in a way that aesthetically goes around all of the 'obstacles' along the wall, such as the plumbing for the toilet, the mirrors, the light fixtures and the edge of the vanity. I want a very nice, clean finished look. Oh yes, and I'd like that person to also install a few new towel racks on the walls for me, if possible. Castro Valley resident

He has done two shower remodels for me with incredible results. The first shower needed to match the rest of the tile in a 1920's style bathroom and the tile had to incorporate the pattern in the room. Not a simple job (tile on the ceiling!) but it was done perfectly. The second shower involved tiling that was a fairly straightforward job but the beautiful tile work sets it apart.

Anthony and his crew are extremely competent, fast, and all around nice guys to work with. I found his rates to be in the ballpark of others but it is his work that sets him apart. Best of luck to you! - picky about my tile too

Looking for a very experienced tilesetter to re do my bathroom floor in Walnut Creek. Current tile floor will not retain grout -- we have regrouted it numerous times and the grout crumbles away within days, so I need someone who can diagnose what the problem is (subflooring, floor joists, etc.) -- need someone who knows more than just laying tile on the floor. Thanks in advance. Erin

    Coronado Center announces multimillion-dollar renovation

    - January 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Posted: 2:24 pm Last updated: 4:33 pm

Coronado Center announced a multimillion-dollar renovation Thursday that will include raised ceilings, new paint and tile and upgrades to the Uptown area malls seven entrances.

Center director Randy Sanchez announced the plans during a new conference at the mall at 2 p.m. Thursday.

The upgrade work will be done only at night so the shopping center will conduct business as usual during the day and early evening, Sanchez said.

Ceilings will be raised in the main concourse areas to provide a more airy feeling.

Coronado Center also is in talk with a number of potential new tenants and hopefully they can be announced in coming weeks, Sanchez said.

The renovation of the mall is expected to begin this month and be completed by October of this year.

The mall owned and managed by Chicago-based General Growth Properties has gone almost 20 years without a major upgrade despite facing increasing competition for retailers and shoppers.

Built in 1964, Coronado saw its last significant remodel in 1995 when former owner Heitman Retail Properties spent almost $5 million on mostly cosmetic improvements.

The shopping landscape in Albuquerque has changed significantly since then, including the debut of Cottonwood Mall (1996) on the citys West Side and ABQ Uptown (2006) just down the street.

Progress continues on new food store in Huntington Center

    - January 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The inside of the former Beechwood Market has essentially been stripped to make way for new fixtures, such as the installed refrigerator and freezer units shown in the rear.

Work continues on turning the former Beechwood Market into a natural foods store in Huntington Center.

As of last week, the inside of the 6,500-square-foot retail space had been essentially gutted. New refrigerator and freezer units have been placed across the back of the store and a walk-in cooler added on the side.

    Josh Elliott

The old floor has been removed and a new tile floor will soon be put in. There also will be new lighting, shelving and check-out counters, and the entire inside will be painted.

The new store, to be named the Common Bond Market, will sell fresh produce, packaged foods, prepared foods to go, and nutritional supplements. It will have a deli, bulk-bin areas, kitchen and offices.

The landlord is building a new entrance foyer and brick facade in the front, and has added dormers to the roof.

In late August last year, Beechwood Market closed unexpectedly after more than a half century in Shelton.

Joshua Elliott, who will oversee the store, said he hopes the Common Bond Market can open its doors in late March or April. We want to open as soon as possible in the spring, he said.

Burst pipes keep Salem firefighters busy

    - January 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SALEM - City firefighters spent a lot of their time Wednesday on water problems, including one which shut down the Peebles clothing store for several hours due to a break in the sprinkler system

Store manager Alex Lester said the business located at 2350 E. State St. in the Salem Plaza opened at 4 p.m., with the water causing no damage to merchandise. The business is normally open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

"We just had a little bit of a mess to clean up - just a little bit of water damage and some tiles," she said.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 9:05 a.m. for a sprinkler activation after a police officer had responded for an alarm going off and saw a large amount of water running out from under the glass doors at the front of the store.

The sprinkler system had a break and water was flowing in the front of the store near the entrance. Firefighters shut down the sprinkler system and isolated the flow of water. Tarps were used to cover the merchandise and additional tarps were used to evacuate the water from the building.

The report said the electrical supply had to be shut down, with water flowing through multiple overhead lights. The water had to be evacuated from the light fixtures. Store personnel were told to have the sprinkler system serviced before activating it again.

From there, firefighters responded to Prima Health Care at 564 Second St. at 9:28 a.m. after employees reported a water line break. They had already shut down the water to the building.

Water was coming from the ceiling area in the west hallway and also into the light fixtures in the hallway by the breaker box. The area was checked with the thermal imaging camera and everything appeared okay. Waste baskets were used to collect the water.

The previous shift of firefighters had their share of water breaks, too. They received a call at 3:24 a.m. Wednesday to help a resident turn off the water due to a water line break at the home in the 400 block of East Seventh Street. The resident was able to turn it off before they arrived. They were also called at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday to a residence in the 2500 block of East State Street for a frozen water pipe leaking, helping the resident to turn the water off.

At 5:40 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters were called to Ventra at 800 Pennsylvania Avenue for a sprinkler malfunction in the chemical storage room due to a water line break. The water was shut down for that part of the building. Maintenance was working on removing the water.

Sarah Robinson, Reporter Thursday, January 9, 2014 1:30 PM

AROUND 40 sheds were ripped open in a second break-in at a community allotment, forcing angry gardeners to consider forking out on CCTV cameras.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The Bournville allotment, which is located behind Lonsdale Avenue and Windwhistle Circle and just yards from Weston St John Football Club, was broken into on New Years Day.

One man, who has maintained an allotment there since the site opened in July 2010, has decided to give up his plot after having a chainsaw and generator stolen.

Site manager Cheryl Puttman said: There were quite a few sheds which were ripped open with what I can only assume were hammers.

They took a radio and a couple of chainsaws. It looks like they were just scouting around looking for anything worth selling.

It is a good community down here and we help each other out and Im worried some people might leave.

The site started as an overgrown field and everyones worked really hard here and this has disheartened them.

Chiquis worked with celebrity nutrition and wellness consultant Alejandro Chabn to achieve her goal of losing 30 pounds in eight weeks.

"People would say I was gordita," or chubby, says Chiquis, 28. "Yes, I had a little chubby girl in my heart, and she's still with me, but like I always say: 'It's time for you [the gordita] to take a break.' "

The young actress says she achieved her goal by avoiding two foods she loves: white rice and chocolate.

"Her effort has been admirable," says Chabn about Chiquis. "It's been a pleasure being a part of her life because she inspires a lot of people."

Chiquis says she now feels truly sexy, and that this new body has presented her with a new challenge: to continue to lead a healthy lifestyle.

"The curves are there, and I want them there," she says, as she puts her focus on launching her career as a regional Mexican music singer, following in the footsteps of her Latin Grammy-winning mother, who died in a plane crash in Mexico just over a year ago.
