NEW ORLEANS In the final year of the Bowl Championship Series, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops won the one major bowl that had eluded him and proved a point about parity in the process.
After taking the past month to cultivate a young quarterback who was still coming into his own, Stoops brought a confident and motivated squad to the Sugar Bowl, where they stunned 16-point favorite Alabama, 45-31, on Thursday night.
Freshman Trevor Knight completed a Sugar Bowl-record 32 passes for 348 yards and four touchdowns for 11th-ranked Oklahoma, outshining Heisman Trophy runner-up AJ McCarron, who saw his otherwise charmed college career come to a sour end with No. 3 Alabama.
The convincing victory also gave Stoops an I-told-you-so moment, backing up his comment last off-season that the gap between the Southeastern Conference and other top leagues like the Big 12 is not as great as some propaganda makes it out to be.
I have the utmost respect for Alabama, and I think this shows that obviously we can play with anybody, Stoops said. So, enough of that. And I just watched them go through their entire conference and play pretty well. Im not pointing any fingers. But I think sometimes the comparisons arent very true.
Stoops is the first coach to win all four BCS bowl, having already won the Orange, Rose and Fiesta.
Before the game, Stoops had provided an element of mystery by declining to say whether he would start Knight or junior Blake Bell, or how much hed play either one.
Alabama scored on the opening drive before Stoops made his decision know by sending Knight out for OUs first series. Knight had played behind Bell much of the season. His completion percentage entering the game was 52.2. He had completed 47 passes all season before a breakout performance in which two of his TDs went for more than 40 yards.
Oklahoma (11-2) won the 80th Sugar Bowl, the first in which both quarterbacks topped 300 yards.
Alabama (11-2) had been ranked No. 1 much of the past three seasons, winning the previous two national titles before its shot at a third straight was derailed by Auburn on the last play of the Iron Bowl in November.

David Cameron visited an outbuilding that housed migrants in west London [PA]
As the first coach loads of Bulgarians and Romanians roll into Britain, the specially-trained workers will use thermal imaging equipment to locate squalid accommodation in outbuildings.
Rising rents and overcrowding means the problem has reached epidemic proportions in London, where most foreigners are expected to stay.
Last night the capital was put on red alert hours before packed coaches arrive at Victoria station later today.
Council officials in Harrow in north-west London, which is already home to 5,000 Romanians, have found evidence of hundreds of migrants living in appalling conditions.
The authority is investigating 100 cases where desperate families pay rogue landlords 50 each a week to share a grubby mattress in a freezing outbuilding.
Council bosses vowed to prosecute those exploiting the most vulnerable in a borough where more than 4,000 people are waiting for social housing.
Tory council leader Susan Hall said: The rise in beds in sheds and overcrowding is now significant in parts of London and the likely influx [of eastern European migrants] is going to turn the pressure up on housing even further.

Harrow has had to draft in hundreds of extra Romanian and Bulgarian interpreters as it prepares to be bombarded for information about benefits, housing and schools.

The world's largest coral reef is being reinvigorated, writes Sheriden Rhodes, with a range of new and upgraded multimillion-dollar resorts and hotels.
As we fly over the Whitsunday Islands to the Great Barrier Reef, elongated trails of coral spawn dissect the impossibly blue water with its mosaic of jewel-like reefs, islands, coral cays and atolls. The glassy surface of the sea and horizon merge and for a surreal moment it's as if we're flying through the ocean itself.
Once the outer reef looms into sight, passengers fall reverently silent as we behold one of the seven wonders of the natural world. Our aerial outlook gives some perspective to the world's largest coral reef system - the only living organism visible from space - and one of Australia's biggest tourist drawcards.
Richard Fitzpatrick, Emmy Award-winning underwater cinematographer, marine biologist and producer of acclaimed BBC series Great Barrier Reef, says the recently flagged loss of the reef's world heritage status would be devastating. "No longer could we compete with the prestige of other world heritage sites. It would also highlight the failure of government in protecting this global icon."
Peter Gash, eco-warrior, pilot and owner of Lady Elliot Island, says while there are many other iconic places worldwide with unique beauty, Australians should visit the reef at least once in their lifetime.
"There is more marine life found per square inch on the Great Barrier Reef than anywhere else on the planet."
While considered one of the world's best-managed reefs, its fragile ecosystem faces threats from coastal development, water quality, cyclones, crown-of-thorns, ship groundings and climate change. Shipping and port development have recently emerged as issues - threatening not just the reef itself, but the $5.7 billion tourism industry it supports.
Despite this, the Great Barrier Reef's islands, towns and resorts that stretch almost 2600 kilometres along the North Queensland coast are being reborn, not unlike the vast summer spawning of corals, fish and other marine life that recolonise its 2900-plus reefs, as this guide shows.

Bats in wards. Rats in labs. Insect outbreaks in labour suites.
These are just a handful of the pest-control incidents seen at Dundees Ninewells Hospital with nearly 200 outbreaks in the last two years.
A Freedom of Information request by the Tele has revealed pest problems including people being bitten in theatre recovery, dead pigeons found on wards and ants in the renal unit.
Across other NHS Tayside properties there were another 562 problems in 2012 and 2013, giving the health board more than one pest control call-out a day on average.
In March last year there was a ferret in Kings Cross Hospitals Armitstead Child Development Centre, while a day later a dead rabbit was found in Stracathro Hospital a hospital which has also had a dead bird removed from its surgical unit. There have been dozens of outbreaks of ants across the health boards hospitals, from wards to treatment rooms to theatres.
Arbroath Infirmary saw half-a-dozen outbreaks of cockroaches in 2012, and Ninewells workers have had to deal with gulls, flying ants and numerous incidents documented as beasties.
The Dundee hospital has even had issues with maggots in its laundry room.
Margaret Watt, from the Scottish Patients Association, said problems were occurring too often.
She said: Id like to think it is taken very seriously when it happens and it shouldnt happen if it can be helped if it is happening with that consistency there is something obviously terribly wrong, when you get all these things with patients in beds having bugs biting them. Even one or two incidents are concerning.
It is just one of those things that shouldnt be happening, but we need to sort it.
