This is the time of the year when we are cleaning up the yard because the leaves have fallen. But sometimes we forget the gutters, and when they are full of leaves and dirt it can be a real mess.
If you dont have gutter guards and you want to have a company install them, hang on to your wallet because its a big ticket item. That happened to me a few years ago. I needed a gutter guard in just a small area, and was shocked at the price for installation. Thats when I found a item that I like to call Not in My Gutter. I know its a silly name but let me tell you its a great gutter guard and is easy to install yourself and talk about reasonable.
This is one of those items that I like to start the year with because you can easily Do This Yourself. The NIMG (not in my gutter) comes in a three-foot piece and one edge just slips under the shingle and the other snaps onto the gutter. The NIMG comes in a white or brown made of high quality rigid PVC and will last for years. The price is less than $3. I cant believe what some companies get for installing their own brand. Another money saving idea that you can do yourself. And 100 foot of gutter guards will cost you just under $100, for a long lasting great gutter guard.
Now to the email ...
Question: I have a stainless steel sink and at the bottom, by the drain the stainless steel is discolored. I dont want to buy a new sink. So is there a paint, or some product that can color this with? Also what is a good cleaner for stainless steel? I have yet to really find a good one. What do you recommend?
Answer: There is a product that will completely cover up that area on the sink. Its called Sinktastic. And its a drain cover and strainer all in one. It comes in a stainless steel look and will blend in with the sink. They also make it in white, and black. To clean the sink use a product called Sheila Shine. It works the best. It will clean off those water marks and polish up the sink.
Question: I have a gas log in my fire place that needs cleaning and some cracks in the mortar between the bricks. Also the outside of the fireplace has some soot on the bricks. I have a hard time cleaning those bricks. What is an easy way to clean?
Answer: Meeco Red Devil makes a gas log cleaner that you just spray on the hot gas logs. The same product will clean the bricks on the inside of the fire box. Just spray on the bricks and use a stiff brush and rinse off. They also make a fire place mortar that comes in a caulking tube. Clean off the area and then fill the crack. To clean the outside of the fireplace ... TSP and hot water is the best cleaner for brick and stone. Use gloves and mix up the TSP granules and scrub the brick or stone and then rinse and dry off.
Question: I can feel cold air coming around the front door. What is the best product to seal it with? There is a larger gap at the top than at the bottom. I need something easy, not complicated.
Answer: Nothing is easier than the V strip from MD. All you need is a pair of scissors. The V strip comes with adhesive on one side so just measure what you need and cut to fit. It will flex up to of a inch and so if the door is 1/8 gap at the bottom and gap at the top the V strip will take care of it. It will last for up to a million door openings and closings. It also works around windows.

The Salvation Army is expanding its services, planning to create a Sarasota park called Club Hope for the homeless at 911 Central Ave.
SARASOTA - It seemed simple enough. Redo the aging basketball and volleyball courts across from the Salvation Army. Lay sod on the scraggly grass and gravel, add benches, little gardens and a gazebo where the homeless could relax.
Create a place where everybody will be able to spread out a bit more; get their exercise, said David Clements, a Salvation Army resident.
On the weekends, Clements said it would provide a safe place to avoid the synthetic marijuana that permeates the streets. Or escape the Salvation Army patio, where another resident, Michael McMullen, said, You hear so much negativity that it starts invading you.
But confusion over the permitting process has slowed the effort to improve 911 Central Ave. though the Salvation Army is determined to continue with the changes, starting with an ice cream social at 1 p.m. Sunday on the property, where they will debut and discuss plans for what they call Club Hope.
Initially, members of the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Sarasota class, who do an annual community service project, decided to help with the effort. They gathered in-kind donations and planned to use $5,000 from the Chamber of Commerce to complete it by their May 31 deadline.
But after meeting with Sarasota officials Thursday, leadership class member Tim Self said turning the lot into Club Hope is not the rubber stamp process they anticipated.
Instead, the Salvation Army, which owns the site, has to request a major conditional use approval. It could take four to six months to go through the process, which includes a neighborhood workshop, planning board and City Commission approval, said Tim Litchet, Sarasota's director of Neighborhood and Development Services.
That timeline would not work for the leadership class, which has to pick a new project.
Moving forward

They both have leafy, flat lawns, gazebos and the ability to play home movies.
One sold this year for $67,000 while the other was 41 times that price.
The cheapest property sold in the Wellington region in the year to mid-December was a $67,000 unit in a Lower Hutt independent-living retirement home.
That's a world away from the most expensive confirmed sale - a $2.78 million home in Mallam St, at the city end of Karori.
And that may not even be the most lucrative land deal.
The Dominion Post understands a house sold privately in Roseneath in recent months for more than $5m, but because it was a private sale, it did not show up in figures supplied by PropertyIQ.
When the Mallam St property was marketed in February the "estate-like" four-bedroom home was described as the best family and lifestyle property that agent Nicholas Reeve had seen in 25 years on the job.
"It's very private, gets all-day sun and would be one of the closest Karori homes to the city yet offers so much space and seclusion."
The refurbished 1920s house sits on 1700 square metres of "sunny, leafy grounds, complete with full-sized tennis court and heated swimming pool".
Renovated in the past 14 years, the 380sqm house boasts bi-folding doors to a large courtyard, home-theatre wiring and a gated entrance.

Updated: Friday, 03 Jan 2014 15:27 | Comments Blood Cotil (r) makes his debut over fences on Saturday
Top-class hurdler Blood Cotil bids to make a winning start over fences in the McCarthy Insurance Group Beginners Chase at Cork on Saturday.
Willie Mullins' charge signed off last term with victory in a Grade 3 hurdle at Auteuil, and with testing conditions not looking an issue, he could get the better of Our Ollie and Castle Wings.
The champion trainer also looks to have a lively contender in Turban in the opening McCarthy Insurance Group Hurdle at 12.30.
The son of Dom Alco was no slouch over timber earlier in his career and is suited by the ground, though Waaheb was second to Jezki last season and finding that form would make him a tough opponent.
Mullins also has Wicklow Brave, who bids to follow up his three wins in NH flat company with a winning start to life over hurdles in the McCarthy Insurance Group Maiden Hurdle.
The gelding took prizes at both the Galway and Listowel festivals before signing off last term with victory at Tipperary and a solid display would further boost the yard's already burgeoning novice hurdle squad.
Boondooma also tries obstacles for the first time in the following McCarthy Insurance Group Maiden Hurdle.
Michael Griffin's seven-year-old had finished second to Cheltenham Bumper winner Briar Hill at the start of last year and struck at Limerick last time.
Playing proved he had plenty more to offer at the ripe age of 11 when he hacked up in testing conditions at Limerick last time and he attempts to defy a sizeable hike in the weights when lining up for the McCarthy Insurance Group Handicap Chase.
