Restoration Watch: After 10-Year Reno, a George Nelson Home Gets Back to ’58

    - December 31, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

In the 1950s industrial designer George Nelson, a founder of American modernism, created for his close friends Sally and James Kirkpatrick a home that would become a time capsule and dollop of midcentury modern deliciousness in Kalamazoo, Mich. Thanks a meticulous, 10-year renovation at the hands of the current owner, the 1958 Kilpatrick House looks just as inviting as it did when it was first built. As it stands today, restored right down to the original paint colors and filled with current and vintage Herman Miller pieces (including almost all of the original living room furniture), the place reflects the "livability" Nelson strived for. Back in the day, letters between Nelson and the Kirkpatricks served as a blueprint for the highly personalized home design, combining Nelson's modernist vision with the Kirkpatrick family's day-to-day lifestyle.

"We are using your house as a kind of guinea pig for our furniture projects, and we are going to try to work out all the furniture for the house without recourse to stuff now in production," wrote (very good friend) Nelson of the endeavor, "the beauty of this scheme is that the furniture design gets paid for anyway out of the furniture budget, and we can obtain the finished samples at a cost which would be no greater than that of production items. If this doesn't add a great deal of entertainment value to the interiors, I would be greatly surprised." Despite the fact that the place was completed during "the creative peak of his career" some 55 years ago, Nelson's stylish experimental home is still a treat to peek at todaywhich serves as a testament both to the designer and to the masterful restoration job.

Chennithala to join Chandy Cabinet on New Year’s Day

    - December 31, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Ramesh Chennithala, president, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, will make his entry into the Oommen Chandy Cabinet on New Years Day, raising hopes that the party and the coalition will regroup ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held between 11 a.m. and 11.30 am. Mr. Chennithala is likely to get the coveted Home and Vigilance portfolio. Party sources said he might also get the Scheduled Caste Welfare portfolio.

The decision on Mr. Chennithalas induction, just two days before the start of the Assembly session, was taken by the party high command a couple of days ago and was conveyed to the State leadership.

Mr. Chennithala, who had earlier refused to join the Cabinet without the Home and Vigilance portfolio, was called to Delhi the other day and directed to take up the job. The decision is being viewed as an attempt of the high command to sort out factional problems and address the issues related to retaining the communal balance of the Ministry.

Mr. Chennithalas induction has been a heated topic since May. But it did not materialise because of Chief Minister Oommen Chandys refusal to give him the Home portfolio. Mr. Chennithala refused to join the team with any other portfolio, stating that Mr. Chandys stand could be seen only as an expression of lack of confidence in him especially after working in unison for over eight years. The aborted attempt only served to widen the factional divide, with the KPCC president and the Chief Minister going their respective ways.

It is obvious that there is haste in Mr. Chennithalas induction since this would be the only opportunity for the high command to achieve its objectives before the onset of the Assembly session, reckoned to be the last before the Lok Sabha elections.

There are indications that Mr. Chennithala will continue as KPCC president for the time being. The party leadership is yet to decide on a replacement for him in that post. There is the likelihood of a minor reshuffle of portfolios if only to maintain the factional balance in the distribution of portfolios. Incumbent Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan is reportedly not keen on becoming the Speaker and is pushing for the Revenue Portfolio, which he held prior to the shift to the Home Department. Speaker G. Karthikeyan is a prospective nominee for KPCC president. The modalities of the reshuffle are currently being discussed by the party leaders and a clear picture will emerge later on.

Governor Nikhil Kumar, who was scheduled to return only on January 2, has changed his plans to be in the State capital in time for the swearing-in ceremony.

    DuPont Introduces Tyvek ThermaWrap R5.0

    - December 31, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

DuPont Building Innovations launched DuPont Tyvek ThermaWrap R5.0, a building wrap that acts as a breathable air and water barrier, while providing continuous exterior insulation. This new addition to the DuPont product portfolio helps builders achieve higher R-value wall assemblies, improving energy efficiency while helping to reduce the chance of water accumulation in the wall, which can lead to mold and water damage that may occur when using other non-vapor permeable exterior insulation products.

Based on sophisticated building science, DuPont Tyvek ThermaWrap R5.0 delivers the benefits of a weather barrier along with an insulation value of R5.0 in a single, integrated product that can be installed using familiar installation techniques similar to those for DuPont Tyvek HomeWrap. Like all Tyvek building wraps, Tyvek ThermaWrap R5.0 helps keep air and bulk water out of walls, but is breathable, allowing moisture vapor to escape the wall assembly, which helps walls dry to the outside.

DuPont Tyvek ThermaWrap R5.0 will offer another insulation option to builders seeking to construct above-code, more energy-efficient homes as they work to achieve the higher wall R-values required by the most recent versions of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). This also can be done without dramatically changing current building practices.

"This product is the only one of its kind on the market," said Angela Strzelecki, North America business director, DuPont Building Innovations. "We recognized the need for a product that can be installed like a building wrap, and provide builders a level of insulation to help improve energy efficiency and air and water protection to improve the durability of their homes. At the same time, DuPont Tyvek ThermaWrap R5.0 can help builders meet or exceed increasingly stringent codes, standards and home certification programs."

Some additional benefits of using DuPont Tyvek ThermaWrap R5.0:

-It provides continuous exterior insulation (CI), increasing the R-value of the wall while reducing thermal bridging.

-It can be installed shingle fashion (unlike rigid, exterior foam insulation), reducing the potential for bulk water infiltration into the wall assembly.

-Windows, doors and wall penetrations can be easily flashed using available DuPont Flashing Systems.

-It is made with 20 percent pre-consumer, recycled polymers, including polyolefin.

-DuPont Insulated Battens will be available mid-year 2014 to provide a stable base for the installation of fiber cement, wood lap siding, manufactured stone veneer, and stucco. DuPont Insulated Battens are not needed behind vinyl siding, brick or stone.
