Gutters (or eavestroughs) aren't just a "nice to have" accessory. Gutters perform an important role in helping keep water out of your basement. Properly installed gutters will catch water coming off your roof and channel it well away from your home's foundation so it can't work it's way in and create a musty smelling (or, even worse, moldy) lower level. While installing long seamless gutters or highly decorative gutters (like copper) is best left to the professionals, sectional gutters (usually made of vinyl or aluminum) can be installed by a handy homeowner (and hopefully a friend or two).

Look at the outside of your home and determine how you would like the gutters to channel the water. You want the gutter to catch the water as it comes off the roof and channel it to an area where it will drain away from your home.

Measure along the edges of your roof. Gutters often come in 10-foot sections, so this will determine how many sections of gutter you need. Add 10 percent to your measurements for wastage (you will need to cut some pieces to fit).

Combine the roof measurement with your gutter layout plan to calculate the number of other gutter components you will need (corners, elbows, end pieces, drop outlets). You will also need mounting brackets for every 24 to 30 inches of run.

Begin at the end of your roof away from the downspout location and measure down 1/2 inch from the edge of your roof and mark it. Move to the downspout end and again measure and mark down 1/2 inch from the roof edge. Use a string level to be sure these marks are level with each other and adjust them if necessary.

Calculate the slope you will need so the water in your gutters will flow towards the downspout. (Gutters should slope down 1/16 inch for every foot of run or 5/8 inch for every 10 feet.) Measure down this distance from the first mark at the downspout end.

Even county residents that live miles from Humboldt Bay may be polluting bay waters without knowing it. Before pouring anything into the street, gutter or down the drain, think about this: On rainy days in Humboldt County, storm drain contents flow directly into creeks, through the sloughs and marshes, and empty into Humboldt Bay.

The storm drain system is separate from the sewer system, and rainwater and other fluids flowing into storm drains are not treated by the sewage treatment system. Motor oil and antifreeze from driveways, pet waste, pesticides and fertilizers from yards, and muddy runoff from construction sites wash into the streets and storm drains, impacting the water quality of streams, creeks and Humboldt Bay.

The bay is one of the most ecologically diverse bays on the West Coast, but it is large and shallow and has a very small mouth. Because of this, it does not flush well with the tides, and pollutants build up over time.

Just one quart of motor oil dumped into a storm drain can contaminate 250,000 gallons of water, harm the fish and birds living in and around the creeks and Humboldt Bay, and pose a hazard for anyone who uses the bay, including those who rely on it for their livelihoods.

To keep bay waters clean, remember that only rain should go down the storm drain. Park cars on a lawn or gravel driveway for washing, and pour any soapy washing water down a drain connected to the sewer.

Pick up and properly dispose of pet waste in a garbage can. Use pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers sparingly, if at all, and do not apply them if rain is in the forecast.

When possible, use non-toxic alternatives, and do the same for household cleaning products. Take unwanted, toxic household cleaners, paint thinners and used motor oil to the Humboldt Waste Management Authority's Household Hazardous Waste Facility on West Hawthorne Street in Eureka. Used motor oil can also be recycled in Arcata at Franklin's Service, 1903 Heindon Road, or at the Arcata Resource Recovery Center, 1445 10th St.

'Tis the season to buy round fruit from local vendors again, as 2013 races to a finish. Considered cheap and tasty good luck charms for the new year, round fruits are a staple of any Filipino media noche table. And those wanting to continue the tradition this year are advised to buy them now before prices start rising as Dec. 31 approaches.

According to a report on "24 Oras" Thursday, the current prices of popular fruits are as follows:

"Yung maliliit na pinya, kahit di siya makain, basta may pinya, bayabas, kahit di makain, basta kumpleto lang yung display natin," said Marino Puno, a fruit vendor at Mega-Q Mart.

The Year of the Horse

Feng shui fans might also want to buy round fruit, as round and green are the "lucky" shape and color of 2014.

Rearing stallion figurines will also grace their shelves and tabletops, as 2014 is the Year of the Wood Horse.

You don't have to stick to just wood either, said sellers. "Lahat naman pwede. Pwede siyang jade, gold, at white, mas maganda lang nakataas ang paa kasi it symbolizes victory or success," said Denise Doratan Chua, a feng shui shop owner. Those born under the year of the rat may also want to take more precautions than others, since the rat is in conflict with the horse.

"Ang conflict sign ng rat is horse so mas marami siyang challenges... 'Wag sobra ang fight sa gustong makiaway sa kanya, basta lie low lang, gawin lang niya ang dapat gawin," said feng shui shop owner Evelyn Doratan Balay.
