Before: The family who remodeled this kitchen lived in the house during construction and survived life without a kitchen for three months, but the finished product makes it worth it.

Last week we introduced you to the Smiths, a family of eight that just survived a fairly extensive renovation while living in their split home throughout the construction process.
Their remodel included an addition of 400 square feet to both the main and lower levels, creating a great room (family room, dining area and kitchen) on the main level and a secondary family room below.
As much as they tried to keep the construction zone contained, living in a home that is being remodeled disturbs the rest of the house and how a family lives. Tiffany Smith offers some insight into how she survived living through the remodel with her small children.
Deciding to stay
The Smiths broke ground for the project when the youngest of their six children was 7 months old. It took almost a year to complete the construction, and they lived through it, literally, right in the midst of the construction zone.
Many families stay in their home during a remodel. One common reason is the budget.
On one hand, if a family moves out, they can theoretically save money because the contractor can get the job done faster (and therefore more cheaply) if they don't have to work around a family.
On the other hand, the cost of a temporary apartment or a condo tends to eat up any such savings.

Boulder Valley Ice and Indoor Sports at Superior will be open nearly 21 hours a day

SUPERIOR -- The Board of Trustees gave unanimous approval Friday evening to a massive sports and medical complex, dubbed Boulder Valley Ice and Indoor Sports at Superior, to be built as one of the centerpiece structures of Superior Town Center.
The 160,000-square-foot sports complex, with an attached 60,000-square-foot medical building, will be one of the larger buildings in this town of 13,000 and will have a prominent location at the southeast corner of U.S. 36 and McCaslin Boulevard.
Developer Luke Taylor, who is heading up the $36 million project, said he hopes construction can start by late January or early February and that hockey players and recreational skaters can be sailing across the ice by fall.
"With our customer base, at least one of our sheets has to be open by September," he said, shortly after the Board of Trustees cast its 6-0 vote. "They need a place to skate."
Boulder Valley Ice and Indoor Sports at Superior is the first building approved for Superior Town Center, a 157-acre, 1,400-home mixed-use development that was hotly debated by the trustees this past summer. The board approved the town center in August.
"This is going to be a great facility," Taylor said. "There won't be another one like it in the area."
Nearly round-the-clock
The complex, with 21/2 sheets of ice, an indoor soccer field, a restaurant and a coffee shop, is expected to draw up to 1.6 million people a year. It will be open from 5:30 a.m. to 2 a.m., 360 days a year. The Rocky Mountain Roughriders, the Broomfield Soccer Club, Boulder Valley Lacrosse and the Rocky Mountain Hockey League have all booked playing time at the new complex starting this fall.

Superior Town Center to get first building after trustees approve sports, medical complex
Rock Island County's chief judge chastised the county board today for failing to seek voter approval for a new courthouse and renovation of the County Office Building.
"It seems that they have intentionally relegated the courthouse to the dustbin of political inconvenience," Judge Jeffrey O'Connor said in a letter to several news outlets and journalists this morning. "There ultimately will be political accountability, and the 14th Judicial Circuit continues to weigh alternatives in the spirit of comity."
O'Connor titled his letter "A matter of political courage."
On Tuesday, the county board voted 16-8 against placing a referendum on the March primary ballot, asking voters to approve the courthouse project. The construction program is estimated to be $72 million.
O'Connor threatened a lawsuit last year to force work on the courthouse but put the court action on hold while county officials debated how to bring the building up to code and state standards.
Since the county board action on Tuesday, O'Connor has been unavailable for comment. His letter was his first public statement since the vote.
"It is undisputed as proven by the architect's report that the present courthouse in Rock Island does not conform to building, electrical, plumbing, and ventilation codes and falls desperately short of Supreme Court minimum standards requirements," O'Connor wrote.
He noted that the board has chosen to seek voter approval for a tax increase to operate the county-owned Hope Creek Care Center in East Moline, which O'Connor called an optional project for the county.
"In fact, the board has articulated no meaningful plan, yet the courthouse remains obsolete and in violation of the law," he said. "The courthouse is not an optional project. It is a fundamental duty of the county board."

Gov. Pat Quinn announces roof replacement project at Menard
I F THE weather in this country was as bad as most of us think, nothing would ever get built. We are currently supervising the replacement of a large roof and re-pointing of a property which commenced in August.
Due to delays of one sort and another, the weather has now caught up with us. However, as someone who is dependent upon fair weather to create buildings and provide work, rain, which is the worst problem appears to me to be less prevalent and it depends whether you are an optimist or a pessimist, as to whether the weather forecast is working with you or against you. In this context I believe that the weather is exactly as I like it. Sometimes however, too much rain does lower spirits.
This brings me to the subject of roofs. Currently in one of our offices, which is a listed building, we are suffering damp and like everyone, I have been putting off the inevitable day when we re-roof. However, the important thing is to find a good roofer and get him to check your roof during the summer months when they are less busy, because from November I assure you it is very difficult to get someone to come and do significant jobs.
At home I have concrete interlocking tiles which are about 40 years old. With trees around, my nightmare is moss. Constantly moss is coming off my roof and my neighbours have resorted to re-coating what are still perfectly good tiles, which is one solution.

I am less keen on this unless it is well done as it does look like a coat of paint, rather than giving you the texture of tiles. However attacking moss is another issue. In America, where they are little more canny about this subject, they place a strip of copper along the tops of their roofs, just under the top row of tiles, for the length of the roof. The rain falls and the acid in the rain turns the copper to copper sulphate which runs down the roof and kills the moss. It is a very slow process, but it is one I would be keen to try and plan to do so next summer. It is a cheap, but permanent solution. Although of course the copper does eventually dissolve completely, before then the roof will need renewing in any case. I aim, before then, to avoid a paint job!

Workers install new HVAC systems over the summer as part of a school-wide maintenance initiative, which has been ongoing. The school system has proposed $16.6 million to cover future fix-ups.
During last summers school-wide maintenance project, the school system addressed several issues including roof leaks, broken lockers and old HVAC units. However, at the Dec. 10 meeting Assistant Superintendent of Business and Operations David Myers said there is still some work to do that was not taken care of this summer.
Were going to replace what we have to and continue to repair, Myers said.
Maintenance staff went around and patched up a number of roof leaks at schools including Patrick Henry High School and Elmont Elementary School. Currently there is not enough money budgeted for full roof replacements, he added.
Mold has been another common issue in several schools. Myers said it is common for old schools to have mold problems when its hot and moisture gets into the buildings. His staff addressed issues at Patrick Henry High School where they sucked out the infected air and filled the entire facility with fresh air. They also disinfected every part of the school this summer.

We are very aggressive with attacking this, Myers said.
When the next summer rolls around, Myers said he and his staff will go to Lee-Davis High School and perform the same procedure, because in the past the school has had moisture problems. At the moment, they cannot tell whether it has mold or not because it is too cold out and cant be detected.
Myers said the proposed total cost of maintenance for all schools is $16.6 million.
