Dear Ed: I'm looking for a wall-hung kitchen sink and so far I'm having no luck finding serious information. Most people I've spoken with don't understand what I want and move on to show me more standard kitchen sinks. I'm a loyal reader and hope you can point me in the right direction. What can you tell me about installing a wall-hung kitchen sink? Jean, Vermont

A: Since kitchen space is usually at premium, many homeowners want the extra storage space that you'll find under most "drop-in" style kitchen sinks. Also, if you're looking to install a garbage disposal, the kitchen sink base cabinet will hide the unit as well as provide extra storage space.

That's why installing an open-base, wall-hung kitchen sink may not be practical for standard kitchens. However, if you're planning for a large kitchen with plenty of storage and place the disposer on a secondary sink, why not look into a wall-hung kitchen sink?

Two things to keep in mind:

First, you may have better luck looking for a high-end utility sink with decorative legs. Decorative cast-iron utility sinks are often made for kitchen use as well as for use in a laundry room.

Second, since this is an open-base fixture it will need to be roughed-in and installed with chrome or brass finish piping under the sink. Bottom line: A wall-hung kitchen sink may not be an off-the-wall request!

Three years ago, Adam Christensen was working as a plumber in Las Vegas when he decided to join the U.S. Army.

He signed up out of a desire to be part of something larger and a dream to become a Special Forces member. Today, the UNLV graduate has risen to the rank of specialist and has been named the U.S. Army Soldier of the Year for winning the Armys annual Best Warrior competition Nov. 19-22 at Fort Lee, Va.

Christensen, who is a military policeman stationed at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, defeated 12 other soldiers from across the country in a competition of military skills and knowledge to win the honor. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond Odierno and Sgt. Maj. Ray Chandler recognized Christensen in a ceremony Wednesday at the Pentagon.

The Sun caught up with Christensen, 29, to ask him about the honor and what it took to be named Soldier of the Year. Here is what he had to say:

What did you go through to train for something like this?

The competition is the full spectrum of what you do in the Army. Wed shoot, practice disassembling and reassembling weapons. Wed practice reacting to chemical content. Just the basic soldier skills over and over and over again, and studying.

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -- A local pest control company hopes to make one family's holiday merrier. The family's home is infested with bed bugs. Pointe Pest Control participates in a national charitable event called "Taking the Bite out of the Holidays." Company owner Jacob Borg chose to treat one Spokane Valley family's crisis for free.

It's a good thing to do for the holidays, Borg said.

The service would normally cost several thousand dollars but Borg said the family did not have the money to call a professional.

This family in particular had bedbugs for over a year and she spent hundreds of dollar on home remedies, he said. She's tried to get rid of them. They got a family living here - people that are getting bit everyday.

Technicians spent all day Thursday working to evict the bed bugs. And in the bed bug business, heat kills.

So we are trying to get the ambient room temperature between 130 and 140 degrees.
