Feng Shui Luopan Compass

In ancient times as well as today, Feng Shui, () pronounced in English as [f'we] ("fung shway"), was known as "Kan-Yu" which means 'The Law of Heaven and Earth. [1] Feng shui is the ancient Chinese practice of placement and arrangement of space to achieve harmony between human beings and the environment. Feng shui literally translates as "wind-water." This is a cultural shorthand taken from the following passage of the Zhangshu (Book of Burial) by Guo Pu ( ) of the Jin Dynasty(; 265420) [2]

The qi () that rides the wind stops at the boundary of water.[3]

Feng shui considers factors such as space, weather, astronomy, and geomagnetism in determining the most auspicious location for a building or an activity. Its guidelines are compatible with many techniques of agricultural planning, as well as architecture and furniture arrangement. Proponents claim that feng shui has an effect on health, wealth, and personal relationships.

Feng shui is often identified as a form of geomancy, or divination by geographic features, but it is mainly concerned with understanding the relationships between nature and human beings, in order to create harmony. Early feng shui relied on astronomy to find correlations between humans and the universe [4] Chinese often used the celestial pole, determined by the pole stars, to locate the north-south axis of settlements. This technique explains why Shang palaces at Xiaotun lie 10 east of due north. In some cases, as Paul Wheatley observed[5], they bisected the angle between the directions of the rising and setting sun to find north. This technique provided the more precise alignments of the Shang walls at Yanshi and Zhengzhou ( ).

The earliest evidence for feng shui to date is provided by the Yanshao ( ; 5000 3000 B.C.E.) and Hongshan (; 4700 to 2900 B.C.E.) cultures. Professor David Pankenier and his associates reviewed astronomical data for the time of the Banpo () dwellings (4000 B.C.E.) to show that the asterism (a pattern of stars observed from earth) called Yingshi (Lay out the Hall, in the Warring States period and early Han era) corresponded to the sun's location at this time. Centuries before, the asterism Yingshi was known as Ding and was used to indicate the appropriate time to build a capital city, according to the Shijing. Apparently an astronomical alignment ensured that Banpo village homes were sited so that they received the maximum heat from the sun (solar gain).[6]

A grave at Puyang (radiocarbon dated 5,000 BP) that contains mosaics of the Dragon and Tiger constellations and Beidou( )(Dipper) is similarly oriented along a north-south axis.[7] The presence of both round and square shapes in the Puyang tomb, and at Hongshan culture ceremonial centers, suggests that the gaitian cosmography (heaven-round, earth-square) was present in Chinese culture long before it appeared in the Zhou Bu Suan Jing.[8]

Cosmography that bears a striking resemblance to modern feng shui compasses (and computations) was found on a jade unearthed at Hanshan (c. 3000 B.C.E.). The design is linked by the contemporary Chinese historian, Li Xueqin, to the liuren astrolabe, zhinan zhen, and Luopan. [9]

All capital cities of China followed rules of Feng Shui for their design and layout. These rules were codified during the Zhou era (1122 26 B.C.E.) in the "Kaogong ji" (Manual of Crafts). Rules for builders were codified in the "Lu ban jing" (Carpenter's Manual). Graves and tombs also followed rules of feng shui. From the earliest records, it seems that the rules for the structures of the graves and dwellings were the same.

Feng shui is an ancient and wise approach to the way our environment affects us. The way we feel and the way we act is affected in a great amount by the environment which surrounds us. Therefore, by learning how to properly organize what surrounds us, we can improve our lives, and that is what feng shui is about.

By organizing our environment randomly, we do not take control of how it affects us and give it the chance to become an obstacle without even realizing of it. Feng shui teaches us that the spaces where we live or work should be thoughtfully disposed in order to take the best advantage of them and make them be a help to us rather than an obstacle.

Feng shui shows us how our spaces can be designed and re-arranged in order to provide us the right balance and harmony. Simple things such as the position in which we place our desk, can become determinative to the harmony we feel in that space, and affect factors such as the concentration we may have when working in that space.

Among the most important feng shui concepts is the one of bagua. Bagua is a term employed to denominate the map of feng shui which is the tool we can use to evaluate each living or working space. This map's shape is an octagon which is divided in nine different areas. Each area correspond to nine main areas of life and allow us to identify the position of each one of those areas in the space we are evaluating..

Feng shui manages five main elements which we should always have in mind when harmonizing our environment: water, wood, fire, earth and metal. Each one of these five elements move in a different way and make the energy of the environment vary depending on it.

The term chi denominates the energy, which is always changing and moving and depends on the five elements. Feng shui studies the way chi moves and acts as an invisible force determining the kind of energy that objects and everything that surrounds us contain.

As we can see, feng shui can provide us a very rich and wise new world to explore. By acquiring the knowledge it has to provide, we can understand and improve our environment or space, whatever its nature is. This way, feng shui allow us to improve our life style and our energy by maximizing the environment in which we are.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Demolition at the flooded former state office complex in Waterbury is shifting into high gear with most interior work done and one building already gone as part of a $125 million project that will restore part of the office and construct a new building above the flood line.

So far, from Main Street, there is little to see of the work being done behind the fence that surrounds the project. Much of the construction is happening inside the buildings that are set to be demolished, said Michael Stevens, the special project administrator for Vermont Building and General Services.

About 125 workers are on the site, and the demolition of the building that once contained the state laboratory is due to start next week. The bidding process for the construction is underway, and some work is expected to begin in February with full-bore construction slated for the spring, Stevens said.

There is a buzz on this campus. We are making progress. The work has started, and it feels energized, Stevens said.

When Tropical Storm Irene flooded the Winooski River on Aug. 28, 2011, the river crept into the complex, forcing the evacuation of the Vermont State Hospital and requiring more than 1,000 state workers to find new offices. The only major building still in use from before the storm is the Public Safety Building.

The local economy took a hit after the workers disappeared overnight. Finding permanent locations for the displaced offices and paying for it was one of Vermonts biggest challenges in recovering from the storm.

In August, coinciding with the second anniversary of the storm, state and federal officials finalized the plans for the complex.

The total cost of damage and repairs at the Waterbury complex is estimated at about $225 million. That figure includes the cost of building a new Vermont State Hospital, now underway in Berlin, and paying for the temporary offices used by Waterbury workers displaced by Irene.

The revived Waterbury complex will house about 900 employees of the Agency of Human Services.

BILOXI -- Garth Caillavet was under the Interstate 110 loop in Biloxi, drunk and asleep when someone kicked him in the foot and asked him if he was hungry.

"They were my angels," said Caillavet, 57, three months later.

Caillavet's life had been defined by alcohol and drugs. He had lost his truck to a DUI and had been on the streets for about nine months.

Those angels were with Gulf Coast Compassion, a ministry run by Anthony Ditcharo and Pentecostals of the Gulf Coast church in Biloxi.

"Instead of keeping the church inside the four walls, we're bringing the church to the people," Ditcharo said.

"We offer prayers, food, anything they need."

On Wednesday, Caillavet was working with a crew from Adonai Contracting Inc. building the church's new 50,000-square-foot sanctuary on Popp's Ferry Road.

"I quit smoking and drinking," he said.

"I've been saved, I found the Holy Ghost."
