He told those attending the annual general meeting of the Community Business Development Corporation (CBDC) Long Range that the company has grown from five to 18 employees and has had a direct impact on the community.
Mr. Flynn accepted the CBDCs 2013 Business Award of Distinction at Dhoon Lodge in Black Duck Siding. This year there were three nominations for this years award and BDW Roofing was chosen as winner.
When it comes down to it, CBDC really got this company going, said Mr. Flynn.
When Robert (White), the owner-operator, wanted to branch out on his own, he went to CBDC for guidance and support.
He said the roofing company is very safety conscious, with roofers that take great pride in their quality workmanship.
Mr. Flynn said since BDW got its bonding status last year, theyve been flat out doing large jobs and public tender work for everything from schools to municipal and government facilities.
In addition to roofing, they are also into asbestos abatement, mold detection and removal and infection control and do work all around the province.

Stephenville business wins entrepreneurial award
NEW CUMBERLAND - Every five years, administrators with Hancock County Schools sit down and decide how they are going to use the excess levy that voters have been passing since 1949.
The excess levy, which is up for renewal again on Nov. 9, represents about 16 percent of the school district's total budget and pays for many of the extras that Hancock County residents have come to expect of their schools.
"This is a very important part of the educational system," Superintendent Suzan Smith said. "This levy helps with all the things that the state does not pay for. There are a lot of programs that we wouldn't have without it."
While the levy, if passed, will continue to pay for things such as technology upgrades, building repairs, computer software and autism programs, district officials are anticipating a significant reallocation of funds in at least one category: security improvements.
Specifically, they want to expand the Prevention Resource Officer program by hiring officers for the district's three elementary schools - Allison Elementary in Chester, New Manchester Elementary and Weirton Elementary, currently under construction. The latter, scheduled to be completed in time for the 2014-2015 school year, will unite Broadview, Liberty and Weirton Heights elementary schools under one roof.
"In light of what has happened on a national level, we feel it is important to establish PRO officers in the elementary schools," Smith said. "The need for safety and security in the schools has never been more paramount."
The school district already has PRO officers in the two middle schools and the two high schools, but the program is getting increasingly difficult to fund as state assistance continues to dwindle. By making the PRO program part of the levy, the district would ensure funding for the elementary school officers through 2019.
Smith wants to increase the levy's security allocation from $128,000 to $380,000, an amount that would also cover security technology improvements.
The excess levy generates $7.1 million annually toward the district's $43 million budget. While that amount will stay roughly the same for the next five years, district officials want to reallocate funds for the levy's 14 line items. Such a reallocation reflects both changing needs within the district and changing priorities at the state level, officials said.
In addition to increasing funding for security, district officials are looking at a substantial increase for roof replacements at Oak Glen High School, Weir High School, Weir Middle School and the John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center, Smith said. Because of the size of the buildings, the roof work will have to be done in sections.

Adjustments made to school levy
Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Joshua P. Starr said he prioritized adding classroom space in his newly proposed $1.55 billion Capital Improvements Program for fiscal years 2015 to 2020.
We are bursting at the seams, he said Monday at Highland Elementary School in Silver Spring, which is at maximum capacity.
Starr said the school system needs $2.2 billion to cover all of its capital improvement needs for the six-year period. He is proposing a $1.55 billion program, he said, because the county is currently facing fiscal restraints and the school system is not getting the funding it deserves from the state.
The proposed program is about $184 million higher than the current program, which covers fiscal years 2013 to 2018.
Starr said the program addresses the school systems ongoing, significant enrollment growth with a recommendation for 14 new classroom addition projects. The plan also maintains schedules for other, previously approved capacity projects, including five new schools.
Since 2007, he said, the school system has grown by 14,000 students; another 11,000 are expected over the next six years.
Even if the program were fully funded, Starr said, 13 school clusters are expected to be over capacity in fiscal 2020. Fifteen school clusters in the system are over capacity this fiscal year.
Most of the school systems growth has occurred in elementary schools, he said.
Of the 14 classroom addition projects, 12 are proposed for elementary schools.
Starr recommended five addition projects at elementary schools in the Downcounty Consortium, an area that he said has faced the countys largest growth in the last six years.

JEFF Kennett has lauded Mens Sheds as one of the most important initiatives in mens mental health of the 21st century.
The beyondblue chairman and former Victorian premier yesterday addressed the Australian Mens Shed Association national conference held in Ballarat.
About 340 registered attendees listened to the key note address from Mr Kennett, who spoke in support of Mens Sheds and the positive impact on male health and well-being.
Mr Kennett said there had been a big turnaround in recent years of men seeking help when they were having problems.
Not that long ago no-one was talking about mens health. Men were ashamed to do it, we kept it to ourselves, he said.
We became more stressed, we became more anxious. Two-thirds of all suicides are undertaken by men.
He credited Mens Sheds with helping prompt more men to speak out about what was happening in their lives.
I think the coming together of Mens Sheds is probably the most profound initiative that has taken place so far this century, in terms of mens mental health, he said.
In his opening address, Australian Mens Shed Association executive officer David Helmers said the organisation was lobbying for government and corporate funds.

The Remodeling Market Index (RMI) continued to climb in the third quarter of 2013 rising another two points. This is the highest reading since the first quarter of 2004, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Jim Hunter President of handyman and remodeling company House Doctors believes this is another sign of a strengthening economy.
The RMI's current market conditions index rose from 54 in the previous quarter to 58.This is the highest reading since the creation of the RMI in 2001. An RMI above 50 indicates that more remodelers report market activity is higher as opposed to reporting it lower.

All of the three major components of the RMI's market conditions index increased in the third quarter. Minor additions and repairs increased from 55 to 58 while maintenance and repairs increased from 57 to 59. Even major additions and alterations increased from 51 to 55.
Finally Hunter added, "The growth in home equity and home sales has given home owners confidence to remodel, repair and do handyman upgrades that they had put off during the tough times. We expect the demand for remodeling services to continue to increase however at a more gradual pace as the housing recovery makes progress."

ARTs next-generation bioresorbable stent is designed to promote positive arterial remodeling and then bioresorb (i.e., disappear).
Presentation of the ART data was made from the podium yesterday afternoon at TCT 2013 by principal investigator of the ongoing ARTDIVA study, Jean Fajadet, M.D., Co-Director of the Interventional Cardiology Unit, Clinique Pasteur, Toulouse, France; and, a member of ARTs Scientific Advisory Board. Dr. Fajadet presented the ART data in the following scientific sessionNEXT GENERATION DES AND BIORESORBABLE SCAFFOLDS, Session V. Fully Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffolds (BRS).
I am very pleased with the event-free results we have seen at 30 days with the ART stent. In particular, I am impressed by the simplicity of the deliverability of the stent, as well as its excellent apposition to vessel walls as validated by OCT (optical coherence tomography), said Dr. Fajadet.
The independent measurement of acute angiographic recoil for the ART stent by quantitative angiography at just 4.0% confirms the metallicstentlike scaffolding performance of ARTs bioresorbable stent, added Jeffrey J. A three-month scaffolding period is commonly recognized by experts as the requisite length of time necessary to allow the healing process to stabilize the artery following trauma generated by angioplasty, and to avoid recoil and constrictive remodeling. Our stent, or bioresorbable scaffold, is designed to perform as effectively as a conventional metallic stent, but with the significant advantage of relinquishing its scaffolding function when the stent is no longer necessary to maintain the shape of the vessel, van der Leest said.
As previously reported by ART in a news release on April 4, 2012: Our analysis of ARTs in vivo data confirms that stent dismantling is occurring at around three months, and the overall safety data look encouraging thus far, said Renu Virmani, MD, Medical Director/President, CVPath Institute, Gaithersburg, Maryland. Dr. Virmani also is Clinical Professor, Department of Pathology at Georgetown University, University of Maryland-Baltimore, Uniform University of Health Sciences, and Vanderbilt University.
ARTDIVA is a 30-patient, prospective, first-in-man interventional clinical investigation at five medical centers to evaluate the ART bioresorbable stent for the treatment of patients with de novo lesions. The primary endpoint is six months MACE rate; and the key secondary endpoint is the artery lumen evolution over the first 12 months as validated via QCA (quantitative coronary angiography) and OCT (optical coherence tomography).
