The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministry has demanded an unreserved apology from the Enugu State Government for demolishing its South-East Regional Headquarters One, Enugu.

The church also described the demolition as a violation of the peoples right to worship as it looks forward to a courts decision on the demolition.

PUNCH Metro had reported penultimate week that the 5,000-seat auditorium, which served as the regional headquarters of the church, few metres away from the Zik Avenue Bridge, Uwani, was demolished by officials of the Enugu State Ministry of Capital Territory Development Authority.

Commissioner for ECTDA, Mr. Iyke Ugwegede, had said the structure was demolished because it was about 2,100 square metres plan erected on two plots of land, with a total area of approximately 2,000 square metres.

Ugwegede explained that the structure was illegal, because its application for approval was rejected in March, 2012, adding that the structure was built on waterways and showed many defects.

However, the Chairman, Publicity Committee of MFM, Pastor Oladele Bank-Olemoh, maintained that the structure was not obstructing the flow of the river and also did not encroach on government land as alleged by the commissioner.

He described the demolition as illegal because of a subsisting High Court order.

Bank-Olemoh argued that several other buildings along the same road, where its regional headquarters was demolished, were still standing.

Demolition: MFM church faults Enugu, demands compensation

A member of the House of Representatives from Ogun State, Mr. Abiodun Akinlade, on Wednesday criticised the state government over the ongoing demolition of about 100 houses in some parts of the state.

Akinlade, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Science and Technology, said the demolition was done without human face as many families were displaced.

The lawmaker, a governorship aspirant on the platform of the Labour Party, said what he expected the government to do was to resettle the victims and compensate them before pulling down their houses.

The government had commenced the demolition to open up roads in the state but Akinlade told reporters in Abuja that while he was not against road construction, those affected by the demolition should have been compensated first.

He said, Any government policy that brings peoples shelter down without first making provision for an alternative and also compensating them appropriately in the name of road construction, is by all standard, an anti-people policy.

While it is agreed that the Ojodu/Alagbole/Ijoko Road is long overdue for reconstruction, I think the state government needs to understand that in every democracy, the people come first.

After much discussion on its options for a slope in the front section of the Williamsport Area Middle School, the school board voted Tuesday to approve a change order to install a two-tier retaining wall.

The board voted 8-1 to approve the retaining wall at a cost of $42,661.50. Board member Dale Vollman was the lone vote against the agenda item.

As Bryan McCaffery, director of maintenance and facility operations, explained, the retaining wall is needed on a slope between the middle school and district service center to reduce the runoff it creates during bad weather. McCaffery said that it continuously floods a walkway used to access a storage space in the district center.

When asked, he said it has yet to enter the storage area but it has been "close."

McCaffery explained that the cost included back fill for the two-tier wall and a drainage system, which would allow water to drain properly off of the slope.

When the board agreed to go out to the site of the slope to see the problem, many questioned the need for such an expensive fix to the problem. Some asked if there were other options that have yet to be explored.

"Because the price tag is so high, I would like some other options explored," said Dr. Jane Penman, board member.

Other board members agreed, asking for a less-expensive fix to the steep slope. McCaffery explained that he would ask for a second option but it would include additional costs for Larson Design Group to come back with another fix.

Lori Baer, board president, noted that while the board may save money with another option, it could end up paying the same amount with the additional cost or more if they choose the first one.

Jay Shultz, board member, said while he wasn't "thrilled" with the price of the project, he was in favor of it since it is a long-term fix and will look good in front of a new building.

With the clock ticking on a timeframe to put together a $17 million referendum, four officials appeared in front of the Verona Board of Education to shed some light on what goes into creating the project at the Tuesday, Oct. 22 meeting.

A set of architects and engineers from Mylan Architectural Group and EI Associates broke the proposal into three main categories: security fixes, an addition to the music room at the high school and the renovations to the Thomas J. Sellitto Field.

Kurt Schmitt, the senior architect for Mylan Architectural, flipped through a slideshow in front of the audience with the different improvements they plan to make. Schmitt said Verona High School will receive most of the work compared to the other five schools.

The currently closed football field will be remediated by dynamically compacting the area, which fills in underground holes, and placing a cap over affected areas so it can be used by the public. Rob Walsh, engineer for EI Associates, said the other options were to close the ground entirely, which he was not sure would even be allowed by the Department of Environmental Protection, or to dig everything out and ship it off site, which would prove expensive.

The potential final result will feature a turf field capable of being used for multiple sports, plus new bleachers on both sides. The construction will continue to the tennis courts, with the addition of a fifth spot. The expansion would allow a typical high school match to let the entire lineup play at once, compared to the current format which only has enough room for four of the five matches to compete at a time. The parking lot would also see an increase of 38 more spots.

As far as the security, many of the doors will be replaced with new cameras and locking mechanisms. VHS will need 19 openings, which includes single or double doors, the most of any school, with the middle and elementary buildings all requiring between four and eight.

Some of the other security changes include repositioning cameras to provide a better view and potential swipe cards, but some board members hoped to hear more about that and technology aspects of the referendum. Board of Education President John Quattrocchi requested to have a similar presentation from Promedia Technology Services on that portion of the funds, while the engineers and architects will also return to answer additional questions in November.

Quattrocchi and Board Member Joe Bellino grilled the speakers about furthering the security measures, such as if there would be alarms when a door is opened from the inside, or how many cameras there would be, and hope to find additional answers during future presentations. Dennis Mylan, the principal architect of the company that shares his name, said the main goal for the security is to delay access to the buildings so visitors can be properly identified, rather than completely prevent entry. The engineer said a school would need to be redesigned "like a fort" to expand safety that far.
