Reactions have continued to trail Mondays demolition of over 100 houses and the displacement of hundreds of residents of Ojodu/Alagbole, Yakoyo and Ijoko in Ifo Local Government by the Ogun State Government to pave the way for the ongoing road expansion projects in the communities.

On Tuesday in Abeokuta, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, the Labour Party and a former Commissioner for Information in the state, Mr. Sina Kawonise, disagreed with the ruling All Progressives Congress over the demolition exercise. While the PDP, LP and Kawonise condemned the demolition exercise, the APC argued that it was being done for the sake of developing the state in the interest of all the citizens.

The APC also argued that compensation was already being worked out for genuine property owners in the affected areas. The state PDP Publicity Secretary, Mr. Waliu Oladipo, said the action of the APC-led government came to the opposition party as a shock. He said, This government is unconscionable. And like we have been saying our people were literally tricked into buying wares in the dark. How can a government whose primary responsibility should be the welfare of the people be inflicting untold hardship on them without any care? This is simply wicked and totally uncalled for.

The LP state Secretary, Sunday Oginni, said the Amosun administrations penchant for stealing had pushed it into destroying peoples property in order to make claims for the compensations it would never pay.

In the same vein, Kawonise said a situation, where the state government would always put tears on the faces of the people of the state in the name of executing development projects was not acceptable.

But the APC State Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Sola Lawal accused the opposition parties and Kawonise of making self-serving criticisms of the Amosun administrations programmes.

Lawal stressed that the Amosun government was only making efforts to carry out the imperative transformation which the previous administration shied away from.

Many graves have been reportedly dismantled and their corpses exhumed in Ijoko, Ifo Local Government, Ogun State, in the ongoing demolition exercise of the state government.

Residents told PUNCH Metro that the number was expected to rise as the state continued to take down houses in its road expansion project.

PUNCH Metro had, on Tuesday, reported the demolition of several buildings and structures along the Yakoyo/Alagbole road and the Ijoko/Sango areas by the Ogun State Government. The demolition was said to be have been carried out in preparation for the expansion of the said roads.

Our correspondent gathered that while some of the corpses had been interred for as long as 30 years, a few were said to have been in the graves for about eight years or less.

PUNCH Metro counted three of such exhumed graves when our correspondent visited Ijoko.

The families of the deceased were said to have taken the exhumed corpses to unknown destinations.

A commercial motorcyclist, who identified himself as Ahmed Samora, said he was paid to lift the corpses of a couple from their grave.

He said, I was called to bring out the corpses. They were still fresh and they were husband and wife. The two were buried within an orthodox church that was affected by the demolition exercise. I saw their family members take them to the family house.

He said there were so many corpses within the area because it was the habit of residents to bury their dead in their compound.

According to the opposition parties, the exercise lacked a human face because aside from its failure to give the affected residents adequate notice to quit, the state government did not put in place a resettlement plan before pulling down the houses and displacing the people of the areas.

The Publicity Secretary of the state chapter of the PDP, Mr. Waliu Oladipo, said the action of the APC-led government came to the opposition party as a shock.

The PDP wondered why the Governor Ibikunle Amosun administration, which it alleged had been unable to complete the road expansion projects it had embarked upon in some other parts of the state, would go ahead in carrying out further demolition of buildings for the same purpose.

Similarly, the LP in the state described the demolition of structures in the Ijoko and Akute areas of the state by the government as a deliberate infringement on the rights of the people under the pretext of carrying out urban development.

It's called clearing the decks and there isn't a chief executive who hasn't at least thought about doing it. If you are appointed when things look dodgy, you act as if they are even more dodgy: you write off losses (in this case lift the debt ceiling) by more than you need to knowing you can blame it on your predecessor. If things turn out to be not that bad, you end up looking good. If things do turn that out bad, you won't look that bad.

The government's debt ceiling is like a personal credit card limit, only sillier. Unlike a credit card limit it need not take account of ability to repay. It is a political limit imposed at by the parliament rather than an outside constraint imposed by the lender. As such it is is vulnerable to politics as the United States discovered to its cost this month in a standoff which threatened to prevent the government borrowing the money it that it needed to function. Labor's Wayne Swan had to lift the ceiling four times - to $75 billion, then to $200 billion, then $250 billion and finally to $300 billion. On some of those occasions his opposite number Joe Hockey made things difficult for him. Enough is enough, he said in May.

Hockey is treasurer himself now, and he doesn't want to go through the torture of having to going back to parliament each time he needs a bigger limit. So he has asked for a very big one - $500 billion, the need for which he can blame on his predecessor. Hockey made the point that he is not proposing to lift the debt, merely the debt limit to give himself headroom free of political sniping should he need it.

His Commission of Audit is looking like a partly-owned subsidiary of the Business Council of Australia. It'll be chaired by the Council's president Tony Shepherd and its secretariat will be run by the Council's director of policy Peter Crone. It's an enviable double for the big business lobby group. It'll be examining what fields the Commonwealth should abandon, what it should contract out and what it should privatise. They are topics the Council already has views.
