Homeowners in the UK could be putting themselves at risk of burglary by not putting basic home security measures in place, according to research commissioned by emergency locksmith and glazing specialist Evander.

The survey, conducted to mark UK Home Security Week, found most UK homeowners are unaware of one of the most prevalent burglary techniques, dont use burglar alarms, and are reluctant to make insurance claims affecting their premiums. (http://www.evander.com/blog/enter-your-title-here-2013-09-23)

85 per cent of those questioned said they hadnt heard of lock snapping, a breaking and entering technique whereby the locks cylinder is literally snapped in two. Since 2009, there has been a rise in the technique, and lock snapping is now estimated by some police departments to be used in more than a quarter of burglaries. More than three-quarters of householders surveyed said they hadnt made any household security improvements over the previous 12 months, if ever, and less than 40 per cent had a burglar alarm installed at home.

Of those who did have an alarm installed, nearly a third (29 per cent) said they never used it because the alarm doesnt work, or because they simply choose not to.

It appears burglars could be getting off the hook unnecessarily too, with one in three householders reporting they wont report a crime as they believe the punishment wont be severe enough, or because the culprit wont be caught.

Some believed the process of reporting a crime would be too time-consuming, and one in five said they wouldnt do anything if they heard an alarm going off in their neighbourhood.

And despite putting themselves at risk of burglary, more than three quarters (86 per cent) of people say they wont make an insurance claim if it affects their excess or premiums. UK Home Security Week began on Monday, September 23.

Michael Fraser, crime author, former presenter of BBCs Beat the Burglar, and ambassador for UK Home Security Week, says most burglaries can be avoided with simple and sometimes free security improvements.

GRAND BLANC, MI Demolition of the vacant gas station in downtown Grand Blanc is expected to begin Monday.

The A.F. Jonna Development and Management Company will start its development of property where the vacant Citgo gas station and the Executive Travel building, which is located at the corner of Saginaw Street and Grand Blanc Road, on Monday.

The cleanup of the site includes demolition, removal of the storage tanks and environmentcleanup of the soil beneath the gas station. The estimated cleanup cost is $903,000 and will be paid through the city's Brownfield Development Authority over a period of twenty-five years.

Planned for the site, located at the corner of Saginaw Street and Grand Blanc Road, are two commercial retail buildings one 8,800 square feet and the other 3,200 square feet. Both will be single-story buildings.

The property has served as the location of a gas station since 1957. The building now on the 11,666-square-foot site was built in 1988.

About an hour before the demolition derby was to start at Route 66 Raceways dirt oval in Joliet, there was nearly a half-mile backup on Route 53, and signs on the Raceways box office windows said the event was sold out.

The parking lots were full, and the smell and smoke from barbecue grills hung in the humid evening air. Some tailgaters had elaborate setups; others just sat on lawn chairs eating and people-watching.

Most demolition derby fans got to Route 66 right when the gates opened at 4 p.m. on this particular Saturday, Aug. 24.

But this isnt your county fair kind of demolition derby, or so says the Route 66 public-address announcer. Its team demolition derby, with two teams of four cars on the dirt oval during each round of racing.

And you can tell its a different kind of sporting event right from the get-go when the national anthem is played its Jimi Hendrixs version that he played at Woodstock in 1969.

Eight teams have competed in the derby this summer: Orange Crush, Real Steel, Junkyard Dogs, Mean Green Machine, Reckoning, Full Throttle, Seek-n-Destroy, and Damage, Inc.

Orange Crush and Real Steel are tied atop the team demo rankings with 35 points each.

A SPECIAL City Council panel that convened in the wake of June's deadly Center City building collapse released a report yesterday calling for a complete revamping of how the city regulates private demolitions.

The committee, which held five hearings, produced 71 recommendations, including creating a new licensing category for demolitions, requiring property owners' signatures on permit forms and making more Licenses & Inspections records available online.

Council Majority Leader Curtis Jones Jr. led the panel, which emphasized the difference between demolitions managed by the city and those by private contractors.

Jones said private projects operate on an "honor system," whereas city-run projects have high standards and a good record of worker and resident safety.

"The vast majority of demolition contractors are indeed honorable, but the small minority of not-so-honorable demolition contractors are whom these regulations are primarily for," he said.

In the June 5 tragedy, a wall from a private demolition project at 22nd and Market streets fell onto a Salvation Army thrift store next door, crushing six people to death and injuring 14 more. The property owner and contractor have been criticized for running an unsafe work site, although the project was approved and inspected by the city.

Councilman Jim Kenney, a committee member, said the city needs to refocus its efforts regarding demolitions.

"The Licenses & Inspections department is not a commerce department," Kenney said. "It is a public-safety department."
