The expected winning design for the proposed DePaul University arena near McCormick Place features a humpback roof.
Pelli Clark Pelli Architects, the architecture firm that designed DePauls brand newTheatre School building, was selected Monday to construct DePauls new basketball arena.
The firm was awarded a $7.2 million contract for its glass-walled design, the Chicago Tribune reported. Pelli Clark Pelli Architects were one of six firms in the running, and was chosen by the board of Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority.
McPiers voting board took into consideration the voices of a nine-member panel composed of three members from McPier, DePaul and the city. The nine-member committee was also advised by three veteran architects on what to look for.
Pictures of the proposed design were sent out in a press release and the 10,000-seat building has a low-roof design with glass walls surrounding the building. The glass walls address community concerns that the site would be a closed black-box.
The $173 million arena is still on track to open for the 2016-2017 college basketball season.
More details about the project to come.

With three out of four states actively battling wildfires this summer, legislators in high-risk wildfires states are seriously considering requiring new home builders in wildfire-prone areas to use fire-resistant materials, such as metal roofing, to reduce the spread of fire and cut down on property damage costs.
Lew Sichelman of the LA Times reports, "One-third of all houses are located in what fire safety officials call Wildland Urban Interface districts, which are near or among areas prone to wildfireswith more and more people choosing to live in rural areas closer to nature, the chances are greater than ever that someone you know maybe even you will lose a house to a fire."
Fire officials have reported that the primary cause of home loss to fire in wildland areas are untreated wood shakes, since they easily catch fire when hit by wind-blown sparks. By requiring new home builders to use incombustible materials (such as metal roofing) in these areas the risk of a wildfire spreading through a residential area is greatly reduced.
Dean Thomas, founder and CEO of Absolute Steel and http://www.metalroofingsource.com reports that his company has seen a definite increase in metal roofing inquiries during the 2013 wildfire season, "More and more home owners are looking for a safe, affordable way to increase their homes wildfire resistance, and fire resistant metal roofing offers the perfect solution. Whether for a new home or existing roof upgrade a metal roof can easily enhance the look of a home while offering significant fire protection."
"We recently obtained an untouched overhead image of the 1973 Laguna, California fire in a residential area. Every single home in the area was destroyed, except the one with a metal roof. Its incredible when you consider that your choice of roofing material could save your home," Dean concludes, "Its too bad every home owner doesnt install a fire resistant roof many wildfires would stop spreading and thousands of homes could be saved."
With millions of dollars in property damage and the cost of fighting fires on the rise as their length and breadth increase, fire-prone states like Arizona are revisiting a plan to force home builders in wildfire prone areas to use incombustible materials.
About Absolute Steel: Founded in 1999 as Absolute Storage LLC dba Absolute Steel, the company is the leading metal roofing distributor in America. Absolute Steel went online in 2001. The company also manufacturers steel and metal buildings, carport systems and other structures for the general public, governmental use, and commercial / corporate customers.

The national No Roof Left Behind initiative has found sponsorship in Norfolk County. Local company, OLYN Contractors, Inc. (aka OLYN Roofing), is now accepting nominations for the free roof on their website, olynroofing.com.
There are a few conditions for the program. Nominees must own the home they are living in and be a resident of Norfolk County. Also, the free roof recipient must be current on his/her mortgage payments. Nominees will be accepted until September 30, 2013. A team of local volunteers will review all the nominees and four will be selected as finalists.
The four finalists stories and photos will be displayed on OLYN Roofings No Roof Left Behind homepage. From October 1 through October 7, 2013 the public will able to vote on the finalist they feel is most deserving. The roof winner will be revealed online on October 9, 2013 and the installation celebration will be held shortly thereafter.
OLYN Contractors, Inc. is celebrating 40 years in the roofing industry. We dont just work in Norfolk County. We live here, shop here and raise our families here. We wanted to let the community know just how important they are to us, says Michael Olen. Giving away a free roof seemed like a logical way to do that.
One of the most important things for the OLYN Roofing family is community outreach. When a fellow contractor from Detroit, MI highlighted the No Roof Left Behind program as a way to thank communities for their support, Michael Olen knew it would be a great fit for the big-hearted team at OLYN Roofing. We are just so excited about implementing a philanthropic program like this at home, says Michael. It is just a natural fit here in the Boston area.
Other local businesses are asked to show their community appreciation as well. We think its a great way to rally the community together, offers Michael Olen. Thats why were inviting other neighborhood businesses to show support by way of donations. You dont have to swing a hammer or even get dirty to help out, he continues. Just give us a call and well find a place for you.
