Gains will also be boosted by continuing consumer interest in laminated asphalt shingles, which are seen as being better able to improve the appearance and value of a home.

Roofing tiles are expected to exhibit the most rapid growth of all roofing products through 2017. Advances will be driven by the rebound in residential building construction activity in the West and South, where tiles are most often installed. Demand will also be supported by greater interest in these products because of their favorable aesthetics and ability to be used on cool roofs.

Among other roofing materials, thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) membranes will see above-average growth through 2017. This material, which is installed mainly on nonresidential low-slope roofs, will see increasing use because of its low cost and ease of installation. Moreover, TPOs are usually white-colored membranes that reflect sunlight, promoting energy savings by reducing consumption.

New building construction to drive market gains In both the residential and nonresidential markets, new building construction will drive gains. For instance, demand for roofing in the new housing segment is expected to rise at a double-digit rate through 2017 as housing starts advance from their low 2012 base. In the nonresidential market, sharp growth in office and commercial construction spending and gains in institutional and industrial construction expenditures will boost demand for low-slope roofing materials.

Reroofing activity accounts for the larger share of roofing demand in the US. Through 2017, reroofing demand in both the residential and nonresidential markets will be supported by a more favorable lending environment, as property owners who put off renovation projects such as roof replacement will be able to undertake them going forward.

West to be fastest growing regional market On a regional basis, the West is expected to see the fastest advances in roofing demand through 2017, driven by that regions above-average growth in population and housing starts, which will spur demand in the residential market. Moreover, growth in population will promote the construction of such nonresidential structures as retail sites, educational and healthcare facilities, manufacturing plants, and warehouses.

Americans will spend nearly $141 billion on remodeling in the first half of this year, according to Harvard's Joint Center for Housing Studies. Here are five home improvements - from budget-friendly to big budget - that provide noteworthy return on investment (ROI) in terms of increased value and improved enjoyment:

1. Skylights

You can lower your electric bill by installing skylights that will reduce dependency on artificial light and fill your home with natural light. A major kitchen job, costing around $57,200, will recoup about $41,200, or 72 percent.

(MoneyWatch) Expecting to recoup most of the money you poured into home improvements when it comes time to sell? Think again.

In fact, some projects can actually reduce the value of your home. And you may be surprised by how innocuous these value-damaging, home improvement projects are. If you want to make smart upgrades to your home, keep in mind that even the projects that offer the best return on investment don't often fully recover the cost within a year of sale.

According to Remodeling Magazine's latest cost versus value survey, even the projects that offer the biggest bang for the buck -- installing a steel front door, adding a wooden deck and making minor kitchen remodels -- won't add more than 85 percent of the cost of doing the remodel to the value of the home if you sell within the first year of completing the work.

The lesson? Make such improvements for yourself or your family to enjoy. Above all, avoid the five following improvements, especially if you're hoping to sell soon. They simply won't add any value to your home, at least not enough to pay back the cost of the project itself.

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J., Sept. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Honeywell (HON) announced today that its Solstice Liquid Blowing Agent (LBA) has been selected as a key component in the spray foam roofing system for the Cleveland Airport System, including multiple terminal and maintenance buildings at Cleveland-Hopkins International and Burke Lakefront airports.

West Development Group, the LaGrange, Ohio-based company that developed the spray foam roofing system featuring Solstice LBA, will apply the spray foam to more than 500,000 square feet of roofing at the two airports. The system recently received a severe hail rating from FM Approvals, the testing and certification arm of FM Global, which is one of the world's largest property insurers.

"The new spray foam roof was more cost-effective because we could apply it directly over our old roof, and it has helped us minimize disruption to passengers," said Rob Henderson, Building Maintenance manager, Cleveland Airport System. "As a bonus, our insurance premiums are now lower because our insurer, FM Global, approved the roof components."

Blowing agents such as Solstice LBA allow closed-cell spray foam insulation to expand and provide the majority of the foam's excellent insulating properties. Closed cell spray foam is used for a variety of applications, including appliance and structural insulation, as well as roofing.

Solstice LBA is a next-generation blowing agent with a global warming potential of 1, significantly lower than previous-generation hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) blowing agents. Solstice LBA is nonflammable, has received EPA approval under the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) Program and is not a volatile organic compound.

"Solstice LBA has proven to be a superior blowing agent and a seamless drop-in replacement for the HFC-245fa blowing agent which we have used for years," said Jack Moore, project manager, West Roofing Systems.

"Solstice LBA offers significant energy efficiency and climate impact benefits to building owners at costs that are comparable to or lower than other blowing agents," said Laura Reinhard, Honeywell's global product manager for spray foam blowing agents. "Around the world, customers in a variety of industries from spray foam to appliance insulation have responded extremely positively to this breakthrough blowing agent."

In addition to Solstice LBA, Honeywell's family of Solstice-branded products includes stationary and mobile refrigerants, gaseous blowing agents, propellants, and solvents based on Honeywell's new hydrofluoro-olefin technology that helps customers lower their carbon footprint without sacrificing end-product performance.

The products have been developed and are being commercialized by Honeywell's Fluorine Products business, a leader in the manufacture and supply of zero ozone-depleting refrigerants used by top air-conditioning and refrigeration makers worldwide, and blowing agents for energy-efficient foam insulation, as well as hydrofluoric acid and precursors for nuclear fuel.
