FREDERICK, Md., Sept. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- When it comes to your deer fence, nothing protects like steel, particularly if your property is as overrun with rabbits, raccoons, groundhogs, and other smaller pests as deer. Steel core cable is the answer to fence and tension system damage caused by rodent chewing. SALEM A case could be made that the demolition of the old library at Salem State University has gone on forever.
Borings and other pre-demolition tests began soon after the library closed in 2007, when it was deemed structurally unsound.
A rear section of the building came down several years ago to make way for the new Frederick E. Berry Library and Learning Commons, which opened this month.
A white, Christo-like tarp went over the remaining section of the library last spring, when demolition began in earnest on a building that had been adorned in scaffolding for years.
This final phase of the demolition, which started around May, is still going on and isnt scheduled to be done until December.
Despite the truck traffic, noise, dust and other by-products of demolition, there have been relatively few complaints about this project, according to city officials and a neighborhood group.
Until this past weekend.
The noise of jackhammers and street congestion finally got to residents, several of whom lodged complaints with the city. While the mayors office said it heard from only one person, the building inspector and a city councilor said they have received several calls in recent days.
Building Inspector Tom St. Pierre said he contacted a state inspector yesterday to forward the dust complaints and reports of jackhammering on Saturday, which would violate a city ordinance. He pointed out, however, that this is a state project under state regulations and oversight.
One resident said that while Saturday was the worst, problems have been ongoing.
GRAND BLANC, MI Demolition of the vacant Citgo gas station in downtown Grand Blanc is expected to start as soon as next week now that a reimbursement agreement with the city is in place.
The Grand Blanc City Council has agreed to reimburse A. F. Jonna Development and Management Co. as much a $900,000 for cleanup at the site.
The site has sat vacant for about three years.
Arkan Jonna said he started working on this project back in October 2011.
"It's been a long time since I've had a community work with us to try to clean up a mess," Jonna said. "There was trust on both sides to get to this point."
Planned for the site, located at the corner of Saginaw Street and Grand Blanc Road, are two commercial retail buildings one 8,800 square feet and the other 3,200 square feet. Both will be single-story buildings.
The city will reimburse Jonna for the cost of the cleanup which includes demolishing the building, removal of the storage tanks and any environmental cleanup of the soil.
It is estimated to cost about $903,000, although City Manager Paul Brake said the cost might come in less than estimated. The city will pay for the costs through a bond.
As part of the proposed development, FirstMerit Bank's driveway, which is located just north of the site, will be developed into a sidewalk and community space. An entrance into FirstMerit Bank will be added from Saginaw Street.
"I'm anxiously awaiting this project as the rest of the city is, as well as what things we can potentially do in the future," said City Councilman James Bappert.
