FORT WORTH, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

BNSF Railway Company (BNSF) plans to invest an estimated $125 million on maintenance and rail capacity expansion projects in Oklahoma this year.

BNSFs 2013 capacity improvement projects in Oklahoma include constructing 3.5 miles of new second main track between Sequoyah and DeGroat; constructing a new siding near Camp; extending existing sidings near Morrison and Mannford; constructing a bypass connection at Cherokee yard in Tulsa for BNSFs lines to Avard and Springfield, Missouri; constructing a connection track at Avard between the line to Tulsa and BNSFs Transcon route between Chicago and the Southwest; and replacing a bridge near Ponca City, Okla.

BNSF will continue its robust track maintenance program in Oklahoma, which will include more than 2,200 miles of track surfacing and undercutting work, the replacement of 60 miles of rail and about 225,000 ties, as well as significant signal upgrades for the federally mandated positive train control (PTC).

BNSFs capital investments in Oklahoma will help ensure our network is prepared for growing demand for freight rail, said Matthew K. Rose, chairman and chief executive officer. The planned capital investments in Oklahoma are part of BNSFs record 2013 capital commitment of $4.3 billion. The largest component of the capital plan is spending $2.3 billion on BNSF's core network and related assets. BNSF also plans to spend approximately $1 billion on locomotive, freight car and other equipment acquisitions, many of which will serve Oklahoma. The program also includes about $200 million for positive train control and $800 million for terminal, line and intermodal expansion and efficiency projects.

Unlike other modes of transportation, U.S. freight railroads use their own private dollars, not tax dollars, to build and maintain their freight rail networks. Since the year 2000, BNSF has invested more than $42 billion to improve and expand its freight rail network.

POWNAL, Vt. -- At its recent regular meeting, the Select Board heard from unofficial "tree warden" and local forestry expert David Dence on hazardous tree removal and replanting efforts on town-owned land.

Also a teacher at the Southwest Vermont Career Development Center in Bennington, Dence suggested at the Thursday night meeting that the town create a plan to budget in advance for the removal of dead or potentially dangerous trees on public property. Dence listed concerns with the practice of waiting to remove trees until they are an imminent threat, or after they have already fallen.

Pointing out that the town owns a chipper and a dump truck, and could therefore eliminate costs for renting heavy equipment to assist with tree disposal, Dence was joined by Board Chairman Stephen Kauppi in his desire to preserve historic town landmarks -- namely its cemeteries and hardscapes dating back centuries.

The board approved of the idea and agreed they would be interested in following up on it, especially if CDC students were able to gain experience by contributing some of the surveying and arbor work and thereby save the town some of the overall cost.

A review of Bridge 42 was postponed Thursday due to heavy rains. Board members rescheduled the review for Thursday, Sept. 19, prior to the regular meeting at 7 p.m. Community members are welcome.

Hazardous waste collection will be held at the Shaftsbury Waste Facility on Saturday, Oct. 26, from 9 a.m. to noon. Latex paint will not be accepted -- dried cans of latex paint may be combined with regular trash, officials said.

The Georgian Colonial-style mansion that is the centerpiece of Bethlehem Township's Housenick Park may get a new roof next year.

Township commissioners agreed Monday to have a roofing consultant evaluate the 90-year-old structure.

The consultant would be Wilkes-Barre-based Mark Sobek Roofing Consulting, which would develop specifications for installation of a new slate roof and provide the commissioners with all the materials necessary to put the job out for bids.

Sobek came recommended by township resident and former Commissioner Bill Berry, who said the company was used for restoration of the 20,000-square-foot roof on the 19th century Sullivan County Courthouse in LaPorte.

Commissioner Tom Nolan said the consultant will examine the mansion's roof and then submit the cost of providing a prepared bid package with all necessary construction specifications.

"If we want to move forward with this, we need to contact these people,'' Nolan said.

Commissioner Mike Hudak said one of the main points of hiring a consultant is to get a professional structural evaluation of the roof.

"That's what we're looking for. We want to cover all our bases,'' he said.

After the meeting, Nolan said if the process moves at a nominal pace, installation of the new roof could start in spring 2014.

But he said a lot depends on the cost and how it will be paid, meaning whether money would be used from the $2 million trust fund left to the township by the Housenick estate or through fundraising.
