The roof is an integral part of any building, and contractors in this industry specialise in all types of roof installation, repair and maintenance. The Roofing Services industry in Australia is projected to generate revenue of $3.0 billion in 2013-14, representing an increase of 2.3% on the previous year due to an upswing in new housing construction. Over the five years through 2013-14, industry revenue is projected to average flat growth (0.0% annualised), reflecting divergent trends in the key building markets. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Anthony Kelly, the value of new housing construction is projected to grow by an annualised 1.6% over the five years through 2013-14, while activity in the non-residential building market will decline by an annualised 3.1%.

The one bright spot for roofing contractors during the late 2000s came from the surge in roof installation work resulting from the Federal Government's injection of over $14.0 billion in funding for the refurbishment of primary schools through the Building the Education Revolution program. However, says Kelly, Most of this installation work involved low gradient metal roofing, and demand for roof tile installation services languished due to a decline in new housing construction. Industry employment currently numbers about 14,000 people in 5,650 establishments, although the total workforce numbers about 30,000 people including employees and subcontracted labour. The industry exhibits a low level of concentration, with no company holding a significant market share.

The Roofing Services industry is characterised by its many small-scale contractors that operate in narrow geographic markets. Few firms have the capacity to operate on a multi-state or national basis, and the largest players are franchise firms such as Roof Seal and Modern Roofing. The major roof tile manufacturers (i.e. Boral Roofing and CSR Monier Roofing) provide a referral service to preferred roof installers. The industry's performance is projected to strengthen in line with the short-term resurgence in new housing construction and the gradual recovery of investment into the commercial building market.
