These mud-covered, grease-stained drivers may not look like your typical athletes, but like any serious competitor they have spent years honing their craft.
For more than 21 years Travis Gramkow of Custer has been training, studying, strategizing, experimenting and sweating over his cars
Saturday night's demolition derby at the Central States Fair was his last.
After 21 years and more than 200 derbies, he said he was hanging up his helmet for good. Heart and health problems forced Gramkow to begrudgingly give up this sport he loves so dearly.
"I'm calling it quits," Gramkow said Saturday just hours before the derby was set to begin.
Over the years, Gramkow had figured out a few things about demolition derbies. He said his favorite cars to use have always been Chryslers from the 1970s or 80s.
"That's back when they still had cars made of steel," Gramkow said. "The one in today weighs 6,300 pounds."
The idea is to crash into other competitors, disabling their vehicles and being the last car rolling. To get things started, a stake is placed in the center of the arena and the first driver to hit it wins beer.
"The biggest thing is it's lots of fun," Gramkow said. "It's not just smash and crash. It's also an endurance thing."
He said he puts hundreds of hours into working on the cars to prepare for demolition derbies.

Hayward implosion:The US Geological Survey estimates a 63 percent chance of a major earthquake hitting the Bay area in the next 30 years. On Saturday, scientists measured the shaking caused by a controlled demolition of a building to better understand where the ground might shake most.
With a series of quick blasts and a cloud of dust a 13-story building on the Cal State-East Bay campus crashed to the ground Saturday morning as scientists monitored the impact on the nearby Hayward Fault.

The controlled implosion on a hillside above the San Francisco Bay also attracted scores of gawkers eager to feel the magnitude 2.0 shockwaves scientists predicted would occur from 12,500 tons of crashing concrete and steel.
US Geological Survey scientists had placed more than 600 seismographs in concentric circles within a mile of the building to pick up the vibrations.
They hope the unique experiment will help map out where the ground might shake the most when the big one hits, though the data collected Saturday will take at least three months to analyze.
"When that building dropped we should have gotten a nice, continuous signal for eight to 10 seconds," said Rufus Catchings, the lead USGS scientist on the project, minutes after the dust settled.
Catchings said he was happy with the execution of the implosion that caused the distinctive building on an East Bay hillside to collapse from view in fewer than five seconds.
"It was so fast it was over before you knew it," said Sally Lopez, 71, who met her husband when both were students at the school and came from nearby Fremont to watch the building drop.

Controlled demolition helps scientists predict the next 'Big One'

The Bethlehem Area School District has narrowed its choice for architect for the new Nitschmann Middle School from seven to three firms, which will present their designs to the school board Monday.
The final three are KCBA Architects in Hatfield; Architecture Furst in Bethlehem; and Breslin Ridyard Fadero Architects in Allentown, according to Superintendent Joseph Roy.
They will present their designs at 6 p.m. in the Northeast Middle School auditorium.
Each will have about an hour to make a presentation and answer questions from the board. The public will be afforded an opportunity for input following the presentations.
The board will then discuss and hopefully come to consensus on their top choice, Roy said. It will then negotiate a contract with that architect, subject to board approval, which could happen at the board's regular meeting Sept. 23.
The school, which will be constructed alongside the existing Nitschmann Middle School at West Union Boulevard and Eighth Avenue, is anticipated to be ready by the 2017-18 school year.
Director of facilities and operations Mark Stein told the board in June that the district wanted to focus on regional architectural firms with a proven record of success designing local schools when sending out requests for proposals.
